There are two types of horror movie enthusiasts: those who are looking for something genuinely scary and live for the adrenaline rush of watching it, and those who are constantly looking for something so unbelievably creepy that it makes the movie oddly entertaining but not scary at all. Luckily, both groups can find what they are looking for on Netflix.

One year ago, it was announced that the Netflix streaming service had renewed the serial killer thriller series You for a fifth season, which will also be the final one. While executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter said that You was always intended to be a “five season journey”, showrunner Sera Gamble decided not to guide the journey to its conclusion. Although she remains attached as an executive producer, she has passed showrunner duties over to fellow executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo. Thankfully, Foley and Lo are no strangers to You. They have been working on the series since season 1 and season 2, respectively. Now You season 5 is gearing up for production, and Deadline reports that Madeline Brewer – whose credits include The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black, and the horror film Cam – has joined the cast.

Every time news breaks regarding Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here), it’s something completely unexpected. Who would have ever thought that film would inspire a remake that stars young actors from the likes of Euphoria, Stranger Things, and Saved by the Bell? That’s exactly what’s happening, as the project (which starts filming this month) does indeed star Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, and Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival. The efficiently titled How to Blow Up a Pipeline weaves a fictional story of eco-sabotage out of Marxist academic Andreas Malm’s book on climate activism. It’s also self-critical when it comes to cinema’s role within the movement.
One of the film’s central activists, Dwayne (Jake Weary), a Texan farmer whose land has been forcibly seized by the government for the construction of a pipeline, is interviewed on camera by a crew of documentarians. They’re keen to “put a human face on this crisis” in order to “raise awareness”. But all they’re really doing is demanding that Dwayne recount his pain for their own purposes. Will they contribute to his legal expenses? Will they stick around to fight his cause once the cameras have stopped rolling? We all know that they won’t. Filmmaker Daniel Goldhaber, who applied a similar sense of moral clarity to his debut,...

Exclusive: Beau Bridges (Dreamin’ Wild), Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Flash), Bruce Davison (1923) and Miguel Gabriel (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) will topline Camera, an indie drama from award-winning filmmaker Jay Silverman (Saving Paradise), which has wrapped production.
Pic tells the story of Oscar (Gabriel), a nine-year-old boy who is unable to speak, watching as he struggles to adapt to the small fishing town where he has just moved with his widowed, hard-working mother Evelyn (Kennedy). Brought together by a broken film format camera, an unlikely friendship is formed between Oscar and a kind repair shop owner, Eric (Bridges).
With the local fishing industry in decline, the townspeople where Oscar and Evelyn now live become fiercely divided as to whether or not to stake their futures on building a luxury hotel – which will surely bring in new jobs — or fight to keep things the way they have been there for generations.

“Cocaine Bear” and “Euphoria” actor Aaron Holliday has joined a remake of “Faces of Death” from “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” director Daniel Goldhaber. The project began filming on Monday in New Orleans.
Holliday will join cast members Barbie Ferreira (“Euphoria”) and Dacre Montgomery (“Stranger Things”), who Legendary had previously announced. Desperate times may call for desperate measures, but they don’t always inspire great art. While “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” is based on the non-fiction book by of the same name by Swedish environmentalist Andreas Malm, a fictional fantasy of environmental terrorism with real stakes, the film itself is sorely lacking precisely that.
An ensemble drama too diluted to meaningfully establish any characters, “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” relies on tension-building music and chaotic flashbacks to piece together its one-trick heist narrative. Using the book as philosophical inspiration,

With his feature debut Cam, Daniel Goldhaber considered the state of online sex work within an entertaining horror film that follows a classic doubling narrative. His sophomore effort, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, scales up the ambition but similarly explores complex themes, this time within the framework of a tense heist narrative. An ensemble piece, Pipeline follows an idealistic group of young activists plotting an eco-terrorism attack in rural Texas. This group of eight includes co-writer Ariela Barer, Lukas Gage, Kristine Froseth, and Sasha Lane. Unwilling to wait for painfully-slow systematic change, they feel forced (and therefore justified) to take this drastic action, even with the risk of hefty prison sentences should they be caught.

Even among many who’ve grasped the scientific evidence, or experienced escalating weather extremes, climate change remains an abstraction for most — something too large and vague to trigger urgent emotional response. Not so the fictive activists in “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” inspired by Andreas Malm’s nonfiction tome of the same name. Though diverse in background and motivations, the eight individuals here drawn together to attack an oil conduit in Texas share a sense that the planetary environmental crisis is immediate, and the time for gently chiding protests past.
Whether their actions constitute “eco-terrorism” and whether violence of any kind is ever justifiable in the service of progress are questions Daniel Goldhaber’s sophomore feature duly grapples with. Still, its degree of moral self-examination is unlikely to appease climate deniers, who’ll likely decry the film (if they notice it at all) as a recruitment poster for aspiring saboteurs.

We had seriously considered an April Fool’s edition of Don’t-Miss Indies this month full of Latvian Redbox actioners, but thought better of such trickery at the eleventh hour. After all, our beloved constituents deserve better than a perplexing blurb about The Humanity Bureau starring Nicolas Cage. And anyway there are too many great, legitimate titles to skip. I never imagined I would someday be writing about a Faces of Death remake that has stars of well-known TV shows in its cast, and yet here we are. About two years ago, we heard that writer Isa Mazzei and director Daniel Goldhaber, the team that brought us the Netflix release Cam, had been hired to craft a remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) for Legendary Entertainment and producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford’s company Angry Films. And now Deadline has broken the news that Josie Totah, who had a role in the recent Saved by the Bell revival, has also signed on to be in Faces of Death.

“’Faces of Death’ was one of the first viral video tapes, and we are so lucky to be able to use it as a jumping off point for this exploration of cycles of violence and the way they perpetuate themselves online,” Mazzei and Goldhaber said in a statement.
Although it was staged and fictional,...

Barbie Ferreira, one of the breakouts from HBO’s Euphoria, and Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery are set to star in Faces of Death, a reimagining of the 1978 cult horror movie being made by Legendary.
Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, the team behind the 2018 psychological thriller Cam and How to Blow Up a Pipeline, are writing and directing, respectively, the reimagining.
Made just as home video was taking off, Faces had the conceit of a pathologist exploring gruesome ways to die via footage purportedly culled from around the world. In reality, most of the death scenes were staged, but the film had the exact effect its producers desired: outrage, revulsion, banning (although not in 52 countries, as hyped by the film’s makers) and, of course, minting money.

Camila Cabello may be the rookie coach on Season 22 of “The Voice,” but the pop diva quickly proved she doesn’t back down from what she wants. On Monday’s premiere episode, Camila hit her block button on Gwen Stefani almost instantly after the first performance began. The mysterious voice was Morgan Myles, a 35-year old musician from Nashville singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” John Legend was next to turn his chair followed quickly by Blake Shelton. The fight was on. Watch Morgan’s full blind audition (without the results) below.

The Toronto International Film Festival isn’t as well-known for dealmaking as Sundance, and the clamor around Oscar-friendly titles tends to dominate, but buyers attending the festival always have a lot of possibilities to dig through. Many of the roughly 200 feature films screening the the biggest fall festival arrive without distribution.
In the past, TIFF has yielded plenty of big deals, including some that impact awards season, such as Neon’s 6 million 2017 pickup of “I, Tonya” that resulted in a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Allison Janney and Sony Pictures Classics’ 2014 acquisition of “Still Alice” that ultimately landed Julianne Moore her first statuette for Best Actress. Even during the pandemic, the sales continued: In 2020, Netflix picked up Halle Berry’s directorial debut “Bruised” for a reported 20 million after it premiered at a drive-in.

Back in person for the first time since before the pandemic, the Toronto International Film Festival will make its grand return with a slate that builds on its expansion from previous years. The 2022 lineup boasts the world premieres of several high-profile films, including Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and the Billy Eichner comedy “Bros.” However, there are a number of hot titles due to screen at the festival that have yet to be acquired. Documentaries by the likes of “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite and narrative features led by stars such as Margaret Qualley, Brian Cox and Tessa Thompson just may incite a bidding war. Here are 15 buzzy sales titles to watch.

“Nope.” That’s the maddening morsel of a clue writer-director Jordan Peele gave audiences before unleashing his third horror flick into theaters on July 22: “Nope.”
Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott star in this science fiction horror outing set against the legacies of horse ranchers in Hollywood (we think). Although Peele’s latest project has been somewhat vague in its rollout, he’s not the first horror auteur to make their monosyllabic mark with a title that’s doggedly vexing and slyly sinister. Dating back to the earliest days of the movies, films such as “Noseferatu,” “Dracula,” “Freaks,” “Maniac,” “Bedlam,” “Godzilla,” “Rodan,” and more have kept things scary and succinct with titles that practically demand audiences venture into theaters to uncover the terrors behind these single word hints.

It’s New Year’s Eve: Ben (Timothy V. Murphy) and Kat’s (Elisha Renee Sutton) last night in Los Angeles before heading to New York. He’s spearheading the move with a desire to rejuvenate his writing career after finding the growing chasm separating talent and fame in Hollywood too much to creatively bear. The change in scenery isn’t necessarily great for Kat’s career as a celebrity photographer, but she knows staying with Ben provides security for her young son Micah (T.K. Weaver) since his father (Neil Jackson’s Cam) is always away on assignment. The holiday is thus an excuse for one last hurrah amongst old friends before life pushes them apart. It might be their final time together. An opportunity for fun—and difficult, unspoken truths.

No pressure or anything, Cam Anthony. However, going into Tuesday’s Season 20 finale of The Voice, he was not only the favorite to win but the contestant that over and over again coach Blake Shelton had suggested could be the first actual superstar launched by the show.

In an absolute “reading the room” hall of fame moment, Paramount Network has canceled the long running police reality series Cops.
“Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a network spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.
All re-airings of Cops had been removed from Paramount Network’s schedule since at least June 1. The decision to remove the show from the air was made in light of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapolis police department on May 25.
Cops has aired on Paramount Network since Spike TV rebranded into the new channel in 2018. Spike TV picked up Cops in 2013 after it ended a record 25-season run on Fox. The show was set to premiere its 33rd season on Monday.
Cops was one of the longest running TV series in the United States in any genre or format.

Sisters never stand down.
From Blumhouse, the producer of Get Out and Halloween check out the brand new trailer for Black Christmas.
Just in time for the holidays comes a timely take on a cult horror classic as a campus killer comes to face a formidable group of friends in sisterhood.
