The acting is great but the story isn't
First, Jenna Ortega can really act. She was in season two of "You" and also showed her acting chops there. Excellent camera work that kept you from seeing she is barely 5' 2", if that.
All of the other actors were believable. I never felt like I was watching a movie.
The actress playing Winnie really pulled off how a seventeen/eighteen year old girls acts and feels in high school.
The story: oof. Cairo's (Jenna O) actions aren't consistent with her character at the end of the movie and that basically "stops" the movie. You are left wondering why is she acting the way she is. Her greatest achievement "destroying a teacher's career." Really, at 18? Nothing she does leading up to this event would indicate that, and that makes no sense. I think this is the reason for the low ratings.
The woman playing the teacher's wife makes the role come alive. Unfortunately for the story there doesn't seem to be any reason for her to have stayed with him. While the dialog is good it makes the giant plot hole of "why is she staying with him" stand out.
I guess they didn't have the right director or writers, because the actors did a really good job with what they were given.
