A bit of a dog's breakfast.
Sleepin_Dragon3 April 2019
Shakespeare and Hathaway is one of those shows I have missed, the main reason being, that it is incredibly easy viewing. It seemed to progress more into a comedy towards the end of the first series, and that trend continues here.

The mystery itself was almost non existent, the identity and result, even outcome of the dog could be easily guessed within the first five minutes. However that seems not to matter, as the character play between Benton and Joyner was the usual fun. Lovely to see Roberta Taylor have more to do, her in that wig was hilarious.

It's just great to see them back onscreen. 6/10

Outrageous Fortune
Prismark1027 February 2019
Frank and Luella return for some easy going adventures with a fistful of references to the Bard. I got an inkling that the budget has increased this time around.

A lawyer George Gonzalo is administering the estate of the late Theodore Athenaeus. He comes to see Frank and Lu about a missing dog.

The mongrel Tim stands to inherit his late master's fortune. He already lives the life of luxury. There is a reward of £25,000 if they find the pampered pooch.

Frank and Lu jump at the chance, Sebastian asks about his cut of the reward money. Pretty soon a ransom demand is made. Both think this might be an inside job.

A welcome return of what was an enjoyable first series. Mark Benton and Jo Joyner have a good chemistry, Patrick Walshe McBride adds a lot of fun.

The mystery might have been spoilt a bit by having a performer who tends to play a sinister baddie too often. However a little twist is added, all for Tim's benefit.

Season two opener

Warning: Spoilers
I became a fan of Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators soon after it debuted around six years ago init, and there was a charm to the series, with the cozy crime series, with the chemistry of the Scooby Gang and also the beautiful scenery of Shakespeare country (and even if you think Shakespeare didn't really write what he did, you still enjoy it). Anyway, here we kind of have a shaggy dog story and maybe the writers kind of got a bit complacent, but anyway, I think Outrageous Fortune is better than no episode at all. Anyway, it's still up in the air whether season five will return init.

Maybe you have to be a dog lover to appreciate this 1!

Warning: Spoilers
Being a huge dog lover, I really enjoyed this episode. I laughed, I cried & Ioved the ending. No, there wasn't a real murder. I'm okay with that. I love this series, the characters are so great together & above all, it has compassion & warmth that I enjoy watching & I'm not traumatized for days like some of the other popular murder mystery shows. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it's 1 of my favorite shows!

Gone to the dogs

Warning: Spoilers
Eccentric millionaire Theodore Athenaeus bequeathed his estate to his pet dog Tim, but when the pampered mutt goes missing.

The deceased's solicitor George Gonzalo enlisted Shakespeare and Hathaway to track him down.

Not on the face of it a particularly arduous case, especially with the inducement of the £25,000 reward.

But the case is not quite as straightforward as it seemed or as simple as our eponymous private eyes, Lu and Frank appear to the casual observer.

Cringe worthy

Out of every fantastic Shakespeare & Hathaway Episode this is the worst. It has an over the top story line, over the top acting, it is just cringe worthy in every sense of the word. One to skip I think.

What the heck?!?!

Warning: Spoilers
What did I just watch?? Frank & Luella aren't the brightest pair of P. I.s but in this episode they were downright stupid! Maybe I'm too used to watching other cop or detective shows, I don't know. This pair is not attentive, inquizitive or forceful but they are gullible.

They can be on the right track but when they question their suspects they seem to believe whatever they are told. They don't fully interrogate, they just accept what they're told without question. A private eye isn't going to get very far like that!

The scene where they were staking out the ransom drop was basically laughable, altho I wasn't laughing, I was expressing my frustration to the TV! They were not paying any attention at all! Luella was looking thru her binoculars in the beginning, she did watch Sebastian drop the money bag in to the garbage but after that I guess it wasn't important. Fifty people could've came along & retrieved that bag & she & Frank would've been none the wiser! They were too busy looking at pictures of the missing dog on a tablet! To make matters worse they didn't even notice the police sirens getting closer & closer & then the park behind them filling up with police cars! Still not noticing even as all the cops were getting out of their vehicles, shouting & slamming car doors! Luella & Frank just sat there, in the car, not even looking in the rear view mirror!! This was farcical! And they call themselves P. I.s?? They didn't even park the car facing the drop point!

Even DI Marlowe had ridiculous lines. After finding out it was Frank & Luella who had put the bag in the garbage & it contained money, she admonishes them for not reporting it. Report it?! There's no law they had to report it, it's a dognapping case! It's not their fault someone called to report a suspicious package & the cops brought their bomb robot out. Marlowe saying she should charge them for wasting police time was a ludicrous line! No comedy here. The rest of the show seemed to go downhill from there.

After the trainer found the note from the kidnappers stuck on the bushes they all gathered to see if it really was Tim buried there. With only the vet viewing the dog & Mr. Gonzalo over acting that he couldn't look, told me that the two of them must be in it together. When the funeral guys, Baxter & helper, wrapped the dog to take it away & it showed the paw, I could tell that it probably wasn't Tim b'c the paw looked different. Frank noticed too but said nothing. Also, the way that Baxter said the dog would get the 'very best treatment money could buy' suggested to me he was involved in the dognapping too. When Frank asked if the vet could do a post-mortem, Gonzalo cut right in saying there will be no post-mortem! So many hints thru out the show pointing to who did it but still Frank & Luella had no clue.

When they do start to figure it out they search the rescue center for Tim. Luella finds one of the dogs toys in an empty kennel & when she asks why is it there, the vet gives a reason, which is false & very easy to check but the two PI's just accept her answer, again. Since this is almost at the episodes end, I'll stop critizing it now. I sure hope they gain some brain cells in the next episode or else they'll need to re-classify this as a comedy series & actually write in some comedy.
