The Notebook is covering Tiff with an on-going correspondence between critics Fernando F. Croce, Kelley Dong, and editor Daniel Kasman.Color Out of SpaceDear Fernando and Kelley,The gang's all here! It is good to have you all back again for another Toronto International Film Festival. We have our work cut out for us, as usual: Tiff is giving no signs of slimming down its waistline. Often I wonder if, in a strange paradox, these mega festivals simply cannot afford to be smaller, that they need their size to justify their cost, and vice versa. Look back at our last eleven years of covering this festival and you will find, unabated, me and others grumbling about the sheer size of the enterprise, the unmanageably large slate of films. Apologies, then, for repeat readers. Covering Tiff would certainly be different if we were in less privileged, well-traveled position, as we could...

Takashi Miike (Audition) is back with the noir-tinged yakuza film First Love, and Well Go Usa has just unleashed a brand new trailer ahead of the film’s release here in the States. Takashi Miike has directed a new film called First Love, and it looks like one hell of a wild and crazy ride! We’ve got a trailer to share with you today for the noir-tinged Yakuza action film, and I think you’re gonna like what you see.
It’s explained that this is the filmmaker at “his most fun and anarchic.” It blends “genres in the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo.”
The story is set over one night in Tokyo, and it centers on Leo, “a young boxer down on his luck as he meets his 'first love' Monica, a call-girl and an addict but still an innocent. Little does Leo know, Monica is unwittingly caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme, and the...

Takashi Miike is having an off-year with one movie in distribution but thankfully, First Love looks like a hit.
This offbeat romance follows a young boxer who randomly helps a young woman on the streets of Tokyo only to find himself embroiled in a drug-smuggling scheme which involves said woman who happens to be a call girl, the yakuza and gosh knows what other unsavoury types.
The trailer for First Love plays like a high-octane action-thriller but in typical Miike style, it also includes some pretty gruesome violence; we'd expect no less from the man who seems to revel in over-the-top violence and gore.
First Love has already received much praise in its lead-up to Tiff but we don't have long to wait to see it. Well Go USA will release the m...

When you have an action film, such as “First Love,” that follows the love story between a drug-addicted callgirl and a terminally ill boxer, you have to wonder what type of filmmaker would come up with such a premise. But then when you hear that the filmmaker is Takasi Miike, you’ll likely say, “Yep, totally makes sense.”
Miike has never been the type of filmmaker to play it safe and stay within the confines of specific genres or tropes.

The films of Takashi Miike don’t always get U.S. distribution, but thankfully after a strong response at Cannes, his latest feature First Love will arrive this month. First stopping by Tiff and Fantastic Fest, Well Go USA have now unveiled the U.S. trailer and poster for the yakuza thriller, which follows a low-level yakuza, a terminally ill boxer, and a drug-addicted call girl who get caught up in a gang war.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “The last film legendary Japanese ultra-violence auteur Takashi Miike brought to Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight featured a character that was essentially a person in a felt frog costume that looked like it’d gone through the wash a few too many times. The being had a knack for martial arts and, like some acid-trip Sesame Street version of the four horsemen, was said to signal the coming apocalypse. So to note that First Love,...

"I'm just a boxer." Well Go USA has released the full-length official Us trailer for Takashi Miike's latest film, titled First Love - originally known as Hatsukoi. This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and it's playing at Tiff next in the Midnight Madness category before hitting theaters later this month. This is Miike at "his most fun and anarchic, a noir-tinged yakuza film blending genres in the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo." The film stars Masataka Kubota, Nao Omori, Shota Sometani, and Sakurako Konishi. Reviews describe it as a "hard-boiled and soft-hearted" action film. Tiff says it captures "the yearning that blooms with one's first brush with" love and the "instant when a person resolves to live for...

The eclectic characters in Takashi Miike’s new gangster movie include a low-level punk yakuza, a sullen prizefghter with nothing to lose, an oblivious sex worker who is being haunted by half naked ghosts, and an unhinged femme fatale on a mission to avenge the death of her pimp boyfriend. Those are just the main players in “First Love,” an absurdist gonzo comedy and wild goose chase that is never short on memorable characters. “First Love” premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, and it will go on to play Fantastic Fest, but its next bow will be in the Toronto International Film Festival’s highly vetted Midnight Madness program.
The newly released first trailer offers a colorful and musical glimpse of the latest work from the prolific Japanese auteur. Though Miike’s work ranges wildly in genre, he is best known for films such as “Audition” (1999), “Ichi the Killer...
