A kind of an odd experience (at least to me) since I know this song for ages, had seen the video a couple of times but just recently that I could notice how unusual it is,
not only its themes and presentation of images but also the way Tim Pope films everything. One of the greatest hits from "Disintegration", the amazing ballad "Lovesong" does not
present such idea through a cute little story neither show has The Cure making an usual performance of the song. Rather than those, director Pope shows lead singer Robert Smith
singing the song in somewhat long, almost static shots, along with the band who appears here and there hiding their instruments, and they are all trapped in this cave like scenario -
it almost feels as if being an underwater cave.
It has a surreal feeling to it, very unusual while the song talks about how special is this other person is to the narrator/singer/composer.
It doesn't have a real connection since Smith body language reveals a complete sense of uneasy and loseness that doesn't quite match with the words he says ("whenever I'm alone with you, you make me feel like I am home again" and so on yet the video presents him alone with...the band, and they're distant from each other). Whatever the case it's a very good video, far from the current trend of that time with fast editing and rushed cuts, this is one is very quiet, barely moves from shot to shot and it allows viewers to see what's going on. Not to mention, it's one Cure's most incredible songs of all time and it comes from their magnum opus album. 9/10.
