Destroy all Neighbors struggles with inconsistent writing, acting, and storyline. Still, the impressive effects make it worth a watch
kevin_robbins15 January 2024
I recently watched Destroy all Neighbors (2024) on Shudder. The storyline centers around a music producer dealing with a frustrated live-in girlfriend and a noisy, manipulative neighbor. When the producer confronts the neighbor due to incessant noise, things take a deadly turn.

This picture is directed by Josh Forbes (Contracted: Phase II) and stars Jonah Ray (Satanic Hispanics), Kiran Deol (Sunnyside), Kumail Nanjiani (Stuber), Kumail Nanjiani (The Lost Boys) and Phil Hendrie (F is for Family).

Despite the potential, the storyline falls short. However, the horror elements shine with top-notch kills, gore, and ghosts. The landlord, neighbor, and homeless character provide humorous moments. Unfortunately, the main character comes off as overly exaggerated and annoying, and the incorporation of music into the storyline feels forced. In a lot of ways I felt this was a mess.

In conclusion, Destroy all Neighbors struggles with inconsistent writing, acting, and storyline. Still, the impressive effects make it worth a watch. I'd score it a 5/10 but recommend giving it a viewing.

Goofy fun, but nothing more.

So Prog Rock gets a horror film!

This is camp horror set in the context of a milquetoast Everyman who has no gumption or spine to stand up for himself. Enter his annoying neighbors in his crappy apartment and the movie is off and running!

Plot is simple: Am I a man or a mouse? But this entails some crazy coincidences, occasional body fluids, and some random body parts.

The film isn't great, but for a smaller budget production, it isn't bad. Definitely Grade B horror comedy.

But, the awesome thing is the explanation of Progressive Rock that is given later in the film. This and the sampling of the main character's music makes this a must for all that can laugh at a Phil Collins joke.

Prog Rock!

Vlads Nightmare
This had the exact vibe I was expecting from a horror comedy of this nature after watching the trailer. Not necessarily predictable... but expected.

The story was pretty engaging and fun, but I did find myself a tad bored at times and it also felt a little longer than it was... which tells me the pacing could have been improved upon. I thought the acting was decent to good for the genre, we don't need academy recognized performances here.

By far the most successful part of this movie were the practical effects. They were not scared to go full force with them and I found them to be supper successful on multiple levels.

This was a fun, brainless, almost nostalgic feeling flick that has some really dope visuals for your eyes to feast upon. Although it had the potential to round out to be something pretty special, I think it landed pretty middle of the road. 5.5 rounding down to a 5, would recommend.

I watched this movie high and still did not enjoy it.
mark-doster19 January 2024
Yet another lazy, pointless movie made as if it was a long YouTube short.

This movie was like having a coke-head show up to your party and tell you something interesting but then their high gets progressively higher and they start doing completely random new things instead of building on what they were telling you about. It also feels like the jokes were written for toddlers. They were ALL flat and did not hit the mark.

I am tired of living in a world where the influence of the online world bleeds into the movie industry. This movie is the same caliber as short films on YouTube. It also acts like it is trying to appeal quickly to followers instead of entertain a fresh audience of general people. But ultimately, it was empty and had no purpose or focus. I'm afraid we are in an era of A. D. D. Entertainment. And if you can't keep your attention focused enough to make a linear and intriguing story then how do you expect an audience to have attention to watch it?

Super fun.
Patient44412 January 2024
I honesly have no idea what the budget for this film was, because it looks rather cheap but has some quite popular faces in it. Anyway for mister Winter this one hits a little close to home for sure, another movie with and about music, finding the perfect song, finishing the ultimate album.

A lot of jokes, that are inside jokes inside the movie, which really felt nice. Great cameos, excellent practical effects instead of CGI, funny dialogue, good characters and a lovely development. Destroy all Neighbors is one fun watch, definitely something to recommend, goes great with junk food and beer.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I feel that lately, smaller horror movies act better than the big ones. They still have heart, passion and often manages to reach their destination. This one, as many others of its kind, succeeded.

Well done to the people involed in it. Excellent final product.

Cheers!

A barely worthwhile and generally flawed genre effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder29 January 2024
Desperate to get his career going, a weak-willed struggling musician manages to come into contact with a rowdy neighbor who is accidentally killed following their encounter, and when that prompts him to keep more deaths under wraps is unsure if that will keep him from his dreams.

This was a decided mixed-bag affair that won't always work for everyone. When this one works the best is the way this one acts as a demented character-building arc involving the way the interactions with the body parts are used to turn him into a different person altogether. With the early setup bringing about an idea of who he is and his struggles with both his life and job, the way he changes his personality the more involved he gets with the various bodies turning up around him is a bit fun with what goes on here. That this is all accomplished with the use of wildly inventive and gruesome dismembered body parts that come about with the various figures who become involved in the journey as these interactions play out with deformed gore being used to focus on keeping this light-hearted and goofy atmosphere constant, for better or for worse. These manage to bring about some likable qualities to this one in some sense. There are some big problems with this one that hold it back. The biggest issue with the film is the often outright difficult attempts at liking the type of comedy featured here. The whole concept of the weak-willed loser that lets everyone walk all over him as he has no spine or backbone to speak of and is turned on the down-on-his-luck figure who he's shown as in the beginning stages just isn't funny in the slightest. The type of loser he's portrayed as with this setup wears incredibly thin quite quickly as he's not shown as a sympathetic figure regardless of the need to finish his album or take care of his domineering girlfriend with these aspects all making him into a lowly pushover that's not worth investing much of our attention in as he continually finds himself stuck in such absurd situations the longer this goes on. That carries just as much weight as the opening where this one goes to such absurd lengths to keep the storyline going where none of it is funny or scary as the bodies keep accruing around him which is a big factor to this one. The other real issue with this one is that, even if this one is going for the goofy and comical, there are a slew of big issues here that make for a tough time buying into the story at play. With the inability to mention why the creatures continually appear or torment him after being killed, how they're able to interact with him, or why no one else can figure out if these interactions are a part of his imagination or if he did all the crimes as it jumps around continually all of these factors without answering any of it. There's also no real need for why the guy goes through with anything here, with the whole situation being started by a total accident and then just immediately going into bodily dismemberment with no build-up or context for doing it which is a major factor against this since the instigating incident doesn't make sense. All told, these are enough to bring it down enough overall.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

Fun and enthusiastic. Super-solid horror comedy.
seven-johnson12 January 2024
This film was shockingly enjoyable. In the past year, Hollywood's painted itself into the obsolete corner, this takes a confident step out.

What we have here is a diamond in the rough - it's a bit hyperbolic of me, but then I refer you to a lot of film released last year to dismal response.

We've got a moderately gory film in the vein of Evil Dead 2 or perhaps a lower-budget The Frighteners with a bit more blood.

We do get a film with some heart to it. William Brown is a neurotic, but nice enough guy failing through life, but trying to achieve some music success with his love of prog-rock. He goes through a series of mishaps and hijinks ensue - I'm not spoiling, but it's fun, the soundtrack's pretty on point, which is generally the biggest let-down in music-centric films. There's some really neat music industry related jokes - again no spoilers, it's a smarter film than it immediately seems - also eyes and ears open for the Phil Collins joke.

It also knows its genre, there's a lots of cool easter-egg nods to other films.

Oh, it's got one of the dudes from Super Troopers being fun - if you like Super Troopers, you'll dig this AND also Alex Winters of Bill and Ted's, the rest of the cast are solid and give solid perfomances and it looks like they probably had fun making it.

It's great late night tv a solid horror comedy and kinda feel good at the end, plus the music didn't make me angry.

It loses points for not having any King Crimson jokes.

It'.

Even less fun than listening to actual prog rock
skankingcorpse13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Destroy All Neighbors completely fails to be an interesting movie, much like most prog rock bands. It fails because it has a weak story, terrible jokes, an annoying lead actor with Jonah Hill, and as much as the movie emphasizes music, particularly prog rock, it makes terrible use of it. Most of the sound track is just typical filler music with no actual songs, it has loads of purposely terrible EDM music, one song which is kind of a song but sucks, and bits and pieces of some prog rockish stuff which kinda sounds more like dungeon synth than anything. The actual story is just the misadventures of Jonah Hills character accidentally killing people and then hallucinating that they are coming back to life. It's just a bad movie, and I will never say don't watch a movie, but there are significantly better things you could be watching than this.

Made for Fun evenings with Friends
Charons_Nightmare12 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It might be a dumb movie with a lot of stoner humor quotes, but also a super well made horror comedy about the struggle of making prog rock while being sieged by the most annoying neighbors imaginable.

The practical effects are crisp and will make any horror fan happy and the characters are fun, well acted and memorable, what more to ask for?

The score is not shabby either and it gives the visuals a callback but not 80's ripoff feeling while a good comedic timing makes the whole scenario work pretty well.

There is also one weird callback to Charles Laughton's "Night of the Hunter" out of nowhere.

CRAZY AND FUN RIDE
jeromesgabilo23 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
From a technical standpoint, I think this was one of the best horror comedies to come out of this year. I mean, I loved the cinematography and production design because it was so consistent with the themes and storyline. The actors were also fun to watch, and all were hilarious without trying too hard on their own. However, I just couldn't shake the feeling that you must be too bored to watch anything more decent to watch in order to enjoy this film. I mean, there were a lot of gore and crazy scenes which I normally loved in these kinds of horror, but I felt a little lost on the second half of it. Despite the happy ending in the end, I think this wouldn't stand a chance with its contemporaries.

Guitar and gore!
JK-WhatsUpWeirdoPodcast12 January 2024
Genuinely think this is a new horror comedy cult classic. Dashes of Evil Dead, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, The Leprechaun, even a little A Nightmare on Elm Street for me. My first introduction to Jonah Ray and he is very funny and cute, seemed a role tailor-made for him. The whole film was very high quality and seemed like so much work was put into it. From how it looked, to the gore, I really felt the love they poured in. And let's talk about Kumail Nanjiani damn near stealing the whole movie?? This was such great fun, and I know the whole horror community will wrap their chopped off arms around it :)

Fun stuff
aronharde18 February 2024
Destroy All Neighbors is a fun little movie about a young prog-rock musician who is struggling to release his newest album and after his new neighbor Vlad keeps being loud and annoying, he goes to confront him. From there on an absurd and fun journey begins.

The movie uses some great practical work and is equipped with a unique and interesting story. There's lots of bloody carnage and the humor is great making the movie actually funny at times. There's even a fun cameo by Kumail Nanjiani in this. Alex Winter as Vlad did an amazing job and his character is already iconic in my opinion.

However this movie is not flawless, since the story's pacing seems off at times and there are several plot holes. The overall production seems rather cheap but it looks like they made the most out of it and overall I think this was a decent horror comedy that reminded me of some stuff from the 80s. [5,6/10]

Wanted to like it.
skullfactorydesigns20 January 2024
This movie was a waste of time. I had to fast-forward watch it. Despite enjoying Alex Winter in a ton of grotesque prosthetics, this movie had nothing to offer:

-No character development -No likeable characters -No great music (which was supposed to be the whole point) -No interesting plot points -No consistent logic (Were they ghosts or not? Some people could see them; some couldn't.)

Mostly, I didn't understand how this was stretched to a full-length feature. It had 30 minutes of actual content - tops. It would have made a passable Creepshow episode at best.

To be fair, the scene with Kumail Nanjiani's cameo was hilarious. But it's the only part I enjoyed.

I didn't turn it off. So, maybe it's not a total 1-star dumpster fire, but I needed to do something to offset all these fake 7s.

A Film That Should Have Been Right Up My Alley, Massive Disappointment
TheGenreMilkMan7 February 2024
The premise of this film, poster, trailer, general appearance, ect were all my cup of tea, so how did I not like this film? This was hard to get through and I admit I pulled out the phone a couple times because of it. This film could not hold my attention despite the sweet practical effects and makeup. I wanted to like it, and even with that advantage going for it, I hated it. Did not care about the story or the characters once it got rolling, matter of fact, the lead wasn't captivating and anytime Vlad was on screen I actively wanted to stop watching. The fact that this is billed as a comedy is a mistake, not a smirk was cracked, the only moment I'd acknowledge as humor, although I didn't actually laugh, was the scene with Kumail as the guard. I'm a musician myself and that aspect of the story with prog rock was again, my cup of tea, even the genre of music, nope still hated it. This film is proof that just because you have an interesting title and premise, sweet poster art, cool practical effects, appealing cinematography, offbeat tone, film festival reverence, the appearance of originality and "its like evil dead 2 blah blah" your movie can still suck without the two most important aspects working, character and by extension, story/world.

What a surprise this was...
paul_haakonsen13 January 2024
Now, I had never even heard about this 2024 movie titled "Destroy All Neighbors" prior to stumbling upon it by random chance. And from the title alone and the cover art, I must admit that I was immediately intrigued and had to sit down and watch the movie.

So writers Mike Benner, Jared Logan and Charles A. Pieper had every opportunity to impress and entertain me.

And they surely did! "Destroy All Neighbors" turned out to be a wonderful horror comedy that not only had a good and entertaining story, but also was a throwback to the late 1980s and early 1990s horror movies. I was more than genuinely entertained by the storyline throughout the course of the 85 minutes that the movie ran for.

I was for the majority not familiar with the cast ensemble, but they certainly had a group of very talented actors and actresses on the cast list. I was only familiar with Alex Winter and Thomas Lennon in the movie.

Visually then you're in for quite a treat, should you opt to sit down and watch "Destroy All Neighbors". It was nice to have a horror comedy such as this where things were done with practical effects, and that was most definitely something that added a lot of enjoyment to the overall impression of the movie.

"Destroy All Neighbors" was a surprise of a horror comedy, and one that I definitely recommends.

My rating of director Josh Forbes' 2024 movie "Destroy All Neighbors" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

The attempt at surreal humor felt like a fever dream
nERDbOX_Dave12 April 2024
I went into "Destroy All Neighbors" eager a Shudder soon to be hidden gem horror on the level of "Onyx The Fortuitous And The Talisman Of Soul" or "Studio 666". The premise - a struggling musician and his homicidal neighbor - held the promise of dark comedic genius. But by the 20-minute mark, I felt like I was being force-fed lukewarm gruel with a rusty spoon.

The attempt at surreal humor felt like a fever dream dreamt by someone who'd never actually had a fever dream and the special effects, the supposed saving grace of low-budget horror comedies, were equally uninspired.

30 minutes in, I could no longer subject myself to abusing myself by continuing to watch this train wreck of a film.

Fun Movie and Concepts, Doesn't Fully Work Though
Reviews_of_the_Dead12 February 2024
This was a movie that I heard about near the end of 2023. I put this on my list of movies to check out for 2024 watches. What helped was that I knew this was coming to Shudder as well. Since there wasn't a horror movie in the theaters, I decided to make this a Featured Review for Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast.

Synopsis: struggling prog-rock musician William Brown (Jonah Ray) finds himself in a living nightmare where he accidentally kills Vlad (Alex Winter), the neighbor from hell.

We are following William as the synopsis says. He lives with his girlfriend, Emily (Kiran Deol). Something to point out here is that he's the dreamer while she is the one that brings home the money they survive on. Will has been working on an album out for years, but we learn that there always seems to be things that happen where he isn't happy with it so it continues to be delayed. He does work at a local, small studio where Scott (Thomas Lennon) is his boss.

Will is late for work as he talks with Alec (Pete Ploszek) who is moving out. He finally got a studio to buy his screenplay. Will also got suckered into helping Eleanor Prescott (Randee Heller) who owns the building. Will does things he shouldn't be with the electrical box because Eleanor can't afford to get someone who is qualified. This building has seen better days.

I should also point out here that Will and Emily also have a neighbor named Phillip (DeMorge Brown). Will calls him Pig Man due to owning multiple pigs. We then see our lead as he drives to work. He watches educational videos on learning to play prog-rock done by Swig (Jon Daly). This is his idol after getting a record growing up of his band. At work, he gets talked down to by a musician, Caleb Bang Jansen (Ryan Kattner), who is recording there. There isn't much that Scott can do since this studio is struggling.

When things can't seem to get any worse for Will, that's when Vlad moves in. He plays EDM all day and night, loudly. This bothers Will to the point where he can't work. Emily tells him to just go over there to ask him to turn it down. Instead, he goes to Eleanor who won't help. He bangs on the wall and then calls the police. It takes them awhile to show and he finds Emily has Vlad over for tea. He seems like a nice guy, but he's annoyed with Will for not being a man and talking to him first.

Will has had enough and he finally goes over there. This ends with murder, or as Will claims, manslaughter. That just starts a wild ride as he tries to figure out his life before it is too late.

That is where I'll leave my recap and introduction to the characters. Where I want to start is that this is a fun movie. We have a solid lead in Will that is a push over. What is interesting as well about him is that he lives in a constant state of anxiety where when a problem is solved, he at once seeks out the next one. That is why he hasn't finished his album. What is interesting is how the story is structured as well. It feels like something you'd get in a comedy like Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle or its sequel, but just going into horror.

Where I want to start then would be with this character of Will. I can connect with this character. Not that I constantly seek out problems in life, but I do live in a constant state of anxiety. When pressure alleviates, I then feel off and wonder what is going to go wrong. That or I will seek things that put pressure on me I know this a sign of mental illness, but I'm bringing this up to say that I get it. Something else that I could connect with was complicating things in your life to better yourself and the fear of putting yourself out there. Writing movie reviews, self-publishing a novel and doing a podcast were things I did that helped me deal with this fear. I thought that Ray did a great job here at bringing this character to life.

Now that I've explored the character of Will, he goes through a rough stretch here. The synopsis gives that he kills Vlad. That isn't necessarily the case. How he has his weight bench set up in his apartment leads to his accidental death. Due to the things that Will's done prior to coming over to talk to him, he's afraid that he'll be accused of killing his neighbor. The stress of trying to dispose of the body and clean up the evidence leads to a series of unfortunate events. I like stories like this when they're done right as they build tension. It also helps to allow comedy throughout as Will navigates this life. I did think this was well done here. I did also want to comment, when Will and Phillip converge later, the latter has similar issues with Will that he had with Vlad. I found this funny since we are the 'main character' in our own story, not realizing that we could be the villain in others. That's a good touch.

Where I want to go then is going to fall into filmmaking. I'll start with positives. I thought the effects we got here were good. They used practical for almost everything that they could and I was glad to see that. There is CGI, but that mostly comes later when this goes cosmic and there's no other way to do it. I thought the framing was good to hide the seams of effects. I'll also say that the cinematography was solid. The best part there is capturing how rundown this apartment is. Other than that, I thought the soundtrack worked. Since we're following a musician, this needed to stand on its own. As a fan of Goblin, who is a prog-rock band with funk influences, I can appreciate Will's love.

I did need to bring up a couple last parts to the story. The first is that I don't love all the comedy. It gets a bit too whimsical with things that they did there. Not enough to ruin my enjoyment. It just took longer for me to see the stakes. They build though the deeper we get into things and the worse the predicament that Will gets into. That was the other part that I wanted to say. I love that this doesn't necessarily have a happy ending. Comedy/horror tends to give the ending that is wrapped up with a bow. There is a realism to what happens. I'll also say that I love that we're getting elements of An American Werewolf in London where Will is terrorized by the people he kills. I do have an issue late where they might be real. I just don't know if this sets in stone enough if this is in Will's head or it is real. The movie just does things for convenience in my opinion that hurts it. If they were going to go this route, I think we need to do something more like we got in Voices where Will is doing these things without knowing.

All that is left then is acting. I'd already said that Ray was good as our lead. I like Deol as his grounded girlfriend. She also contributes to Will's bad day in a logical way. Heller, Brown, Christian Calloway and Winter all factor in as well with complicating his life as well as tormenting him. That worked for me. I also like Ploszek, Lennon, Daly, Kattner and the rest of the cast as they push Will to where he ends up. The acting is good to blend in real problems with comedy in a believable way.

In conclusion, I liked this movie overall. We get a solid lead in Will that is either us or someone we know. I thought the rest of the cast was good in pushing him to where he ended up. The comedic set up of how the problems in his life snowball was good. There are elements here that I don't know if they make sense that does hurt the tone or realism. This is well-made though with the practical effects and cinematography leading the way. I'd also say the soundtrack fit what was needed. If you don't like comedy/horror skip this. I have a feeling this won't be for everyone, but I had a fun time here.

My Rating: 7 out of 10.

Hilarious

Warning: Spoilers
William is a prog-rock musician who has been trying to finish his album on the side for years. After a series of accidental deaths and bonding with corpses, William finally finds the inspiration he needs to finish his album.

This was a goofy movie. The characters were ridiculous, especially his new neighbor Vlad. The story isn't even totally coherent but this only adds to the comedy. If you are a fan of horror and horror comedies, especially with any idea at all of what prog-rock is, you will probably enjoy this. I gave a 6 because it was an enjoyable watch with a few laugh out loud moments for me.

It's definitely a niche movie
adrienneberkshire24 February 2024
Okay so, to start with, this is along the lines of an 80s style horror comedy. It's not meant to be scary. There's a fair amount of gore, the story is a bit trite and predictable but it's actually quite a fun little movie.

I'm not a horror movie fan in general, however, due to my best friend's love of horror I have really become quite aware of exactly what movies in the genre I enjoy.

It's definitely got an old school cheese appeal (great for those of us that live for cheese and one-liners). It's not overly creepy or gross in a body horror or torture porn style.

I say give it a watch, if you don't like it, it's not for you.
