There’s a very real chance that Ingrid Bergman, Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand will soon be getting company on the list of actresses awarded as many as three Oscars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That’s how impressive Cate Blanchett, a two-time past winner, is in Tár, the first film in 16 years directed by Todd Field, whose previous efforts, In the Bedroom (2001) and Little Children (2006), each garnered multiple acting nominations and a screenplay nom (the former was also up for best picture).
Tár, which Focus Features will release Oct. 7, had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last week en route to its North American premiere Saturday night at the Telluride Film Festival’s Palm Theatre, where it played like gangbusters ahead of a festival tribute to Blanchett. The 53-year-old Aussie has given a stunning number of...

At the end of the 1970s, while working as a bat boy for the Portland Mavericks, Todd Field had a bright idea: why not make a stringy-shaped gum (call it Big League Chew) so that kids could mimic the tobacco chewing players on the plate? In 1980 he and his partner sold it to Wrigley’s. He was 16 years old.
Field knows a lot about ideas. He probably knows a phrase like “inside baseball,” too. You’ll find evidence of both in TÁR, his first film in 16 years. For much of its first hour Cate Blanchett (eating up scenery as the eponymous conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic) is made to deliver slightly unconvincing takes on the world of classical music. For the next two she is totally remarkable, stretching out those talents in a work that responds in turn. TÁR is an effort of tremendous skill and restraint, beginning with a...

Meghan Trainor just took us back to a time when her lips were moving in Charlie Puth's direction. The "Me Too" singer has given a glimpse into how she feels about that time she locked lips with Charlie during their performance at the 2015 American Music Awards. In a TikTok shared to Meghan's page, the 28-year-old used the "Hal Walker Plays the Banakulas" audio to compare three moments in her career: when her song "All About That Bass" hit No. 1 in 2014, when she won a Grammy in 2016 and when she made "the decision to kiss Charlie Puth on national television in 2015." The first two milestones got Meghan dancing in the video. As for the last one, the singer stood still in...

The Independent Spirit Awards were the latest Hollywood voting body to go genderless with its awards, announcing on Aug. 23 that the best lead actress and best supporting actress awards were being retired forever.
Instead, there will be only “best lead performance” and “best supporting performance” awards handed out to a gender-diverse pool of 10 nominees in film and scripted series categories at the ceremony, scheduled for March 4, 2023.
To make up for the two eliminated categories, a new category, honoring a “breakthrough performance in film,” was added — for a total of seven total acting awards presented, down from eight previously.
This move follows similar ones made previously by the Grammys (which went genderless in 2012) and the Gotham Awards, which made a similar move in 2021.
“It’s something we’ve been discussing for a while,” says Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent, which mounts the Independent Spirit Awards.

Inventing Anna became an instant hit when it was released earlier this year. The series gave us plenty of true crime material to pour over – but where exactly does fact stop and fiction start?
The Netflix series – which stars Ozark actor Julia Garner as scammer Anna Delvey (real name Anna Sorokin) – was one of the streamer’s most anticipated releases to date, and captivated audiences when it finally arrived in February.
The show, however, also caused a major stir. Netflix has since been sued by Rachel DeLoache Williams, former Vanity Fair staffer and real-life former friend of Delvey’s who is portrayed in the series by actor Katie Lowes.
Williams filed a lawsuit on Monday (29 August) claiming that she was falsely depicted in the drama as “unethical,” “greedy,” “snobbish” and “disloyal”.
