The Devil You Know
Prismark1022 February 2018
Father Brown and Inspector Mallory team up as Mallory finds himself usurped by a detective sent over from Scotland Yard and now wants to make Kembleford his permanent home.

At a local bowls tournament the garroted body of a prominent cop and a former Nazi war criminal hunter is found. The initial suspects are his brother who disliked him and his lady friend who flirted with the cop.

Kembleford is also home to a Polish couple who escaped the atrocities.

There are several nice twists in this episode and a reminder for the good padre that it is better to stick with the inspector you know.

A very clever mystery.

The quality in this fifth series has genuinely surprised me, after a few duff episodes in Series 4 I thought the show was soon to be put to bed, but this fifth run arguably has been the best yet, and The Devil you know is another example, of quality writing, great acting and quality story telling. What starts off as a frivolous outing turns into a fine murder mystery, suspenseful, loaded with twists and turns. Genuinely didn't see outcome coming at all, so credit where it's due. I particularly enjoyed Adam Kotz and the fabulous Éva Magyar. Back seat for Mrs McCarthy and Bunty, but it was nice to see Inspector Mallory's character delivered in a more enjoyable manner, enjoyed his scenes with Father B.

Not to be missed.

Mallory and Father brown unite

Mallory is forced to turn to Father Brown for help when a VIP policeman (former Nazi Hunter) is murdered at a bowls match. Fairly intriguing episode with the pairing of Inspector Mallory and Father brown being a fun one. They work together to solve the mystery. I personally find Mallory a hilarious character; he's such a useless policeman.

War crimes

Warning: Spoilers
This episode, The Devil You Know, deals with the thorny issues of war crimes from World War Two, particularly the ones from the Germany and its aftermath.

This is a serious matter, and one of the actors in this episode, The Devil You Know, has a resemblance to Australian journalist, Aaron Heslehurst, who is on the BBC.

Anyway, the ending was quite a twist in a way, with Inspector Mallory's acting position at stake. Jack Deam humbles himself in the role, and he always hams it up without a doubt.

I've only caught up with Father Brown relatively recently and am starting to watch the Sister Boniface spin-off.

Stolen story line
tchk12 April 2018
I figured this out in the first few minutes- the plot was stolen, including some details, from a first season episode of Magnum, PI.
