The first episode of Man like Mobeen tries to get away from racial stereotypes. Not one mention is made of arranged marriages even though Moben has a younger sister.
Mobeen is a reformed drug dealer going straight as he has to look after his little sister. He also has a stupid friend called Eight who has just bought a laptop in a black bag. The bag contains a dead cat and Eight did not check.
Mobeen finds he needs to confront a local drug dealer as his sister Aqsa ended up hiding a bag containing drugs.
Set in Birmingham, Man like Mobeen is not far removed from other urban sitcoms featuring mainly black characters.
Mobeen and his friends are frequently targeted by the police, racially profiled and in an early scene held up at gunpoint and threatened to be shot dead by the police.
The show is aimed at a younger more streetwise audience. They would certainly find some of the characters funny. It is edgy and this in turn blunts some of the humour. The final fight scene had to be done in a comedic way but I did not think it came off.
