Although his pilgrimage and return to Houthem are well documented, his youth and life as a knight are still shrouded in mystery.
- Diocese of Liege, 1150 - The savage knight Gerlachus van Houthem, together with his men, is involved in a great battle, until one of the enemies flees. The men do not hesitate for a moment and take the chase. Around the same moment, a man rushes through a large castle. When he arrived in the space of his destination, something dreadful happened: Gerlachus' wife and newborn child died. Not much later, someone leaves the castle gate galloping on his horse.The next morning Gerlachus and his men sneak through a hilly forest. Silently and in supreme concentration, they pursue their target, while an unknown man runs through the forest panting. On a hill Gerlachus gets the target in his sights and tightens his bow The unknown man, arrived at the foot of a hill, stumbles and falls. Gerlachus' arrow flies into the valley .A moment later the men are standing in front of a dead deer; this trophy will be their next supper. However, something does not sit well with Gerlachus. Moments later, Gerlachus is called to the infirmary. It turns out his friend Ecbertus, the man we saw earlier in the castle and the one who is now bringing the bad news. Gerlachus hurries back to his home, where he finds the deceased body of his wife and newborn son.About ten years later, a monk walks through a corridor of Abij Rolduc; anonymous, silently. The monk walks into a room and kneels on a prayer chair. The monk is Gerlachus; he addresses the image of Jesus and speaks his regular prayer; that he will pay for his past and fulfill his journey.
