Norwegian fourth grader Sune Anderssons isn't amused when his moved-in new classmate shares the same Christian name, is the one who gets to use just Sune while our native is addressed as Sune 2. He fears the interesting, soon popular intruder will even 'steal' his girl friend Sophie, but every effort to undermine his talented rival backfires for him or the whole class. Meanwhile his father Rudolf Andersson fears his editor job is a goner under the new editor in chief, so he writes a resignation letter to switch to his passion, music, only to find he was up for promotion. Mother Karin Andersson jealously rivals with new Sune's obnoxiously cool mother. Kid brother Håkan discovers the newcomers lied about returning from America, but Sune comes to realize his rival is no enemy after setting up his worst sabotage.
