The sci-fi thriller Companion is coming our way from writer/director Drew Hancock and the team behind the 2022 horror hit Barbarian… but even though nearly a year has passed since the project assembled its cast and went into production, we still know very little about it. It has managed to stay shrouded in secrecy all this time. Which is a good thing, since its release date is still several months away. Deadline broke the news that Companion won’t be reaching theatres (including IMAX screens) until January 10, 2025.
That release date gives Companion a one week head-start on Blumhouse Productions and director Leigh Whannell’s reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property Wolf Man.
New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and the film’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Cregger’s next film,...

The latest to join the cast of upcoming sci-fi/horror Companion for New Line Cinema is Rupert Friend, Deadline reports today.
Friend joins previously announced cast members Sophie Thatcher, Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Lukas Gage (“You”), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), and Jack Quaid (Scream, “The Boys”).
Announced back in February, Barbarian director Zach Cregger is producing Companion for New Line Cinema. Described as a sci-fi/horror movie, Companion will mark the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script.
At this time, plot details remain under wraps.
Rupert Friend most recently starred in William Brent Bell’s 2021 horror movie Separation, pictured above, as Jeff, the single father struggling to piece together a new life for daughter Jenny (Violet McGraw) when the puppets from his comics seem to take on a life of their own. The actor can currently be seen in Wes Anderson...

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

The executives at New Line Cinema were clearly blown away by last year’s horror release Barbarian (watch it Here) – which was distributed by 20th Century Studios – as they have made it very clear over the last week that they are eager to be in business with the creative team behind that film. They made an eight figure deal with writer/director Zach Cregger to ensure that his next movie – something called Weapons – will be a New Line Cinema project. They signed a first look deal with Barbarian producers BoulderLight Pictures so they will develop high concept genre properties for the company. And now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that New Line Cinema has put a thriller called Companion on the fast track to production, with Cregger producing alongside BoulderLight and Vertigo’s Roy Lee.

Barbarian producer BoulderLight Pictures has set up a new thriller titled Companion at New Line, Deadline can confirm. The film will be the first produced under the banner’s first-look deal with the studio, announced just days ago.
News of the project comes following New Line’s triumph in a heated auction for Weapons — the second feature from writer-director Zach Cregger to produced by both BoulderLight and Vertigo Entertainment.
Details as to the plot of Companion are under wraps, though it’s being fast-tracked for production this year alongside Weapons. Deadline understands that Cregger initially eyed Companion as his directorial follow-up to Barbarian, though the team wound up setting the project as the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who penned the script.
Producers are BoulderLight’s Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz, Vertigo’s Roy Lee, and Cregger. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs will exec produce.

Just days after winning a heated auction for the next feature project from Zach Cregger, New Line is quickly reteaming with the filmmaker behind last year’s surprise hit, Barbarian, for another genre project.
The Warner Bros. arm has picked up Companion, a sci-fi thriller from Drew Hancock, who wrote the script and who will also direct.
Cregger will produce the feature along with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. The project reunites the filmmaking team that produced, and in the case of Cregger, wrote and directed, Barbarian. And it becomes one of the first projects out of gate for BoulderLight’s freshly signed deal with New Line.
Plot details are being kept securely squared away on a screenwriting app.
And just like Cregger’s new project, Weapons, Companion is also being fast-tracked for a 2023 production start.
Sources say Companion was initially going...

Updated: Viacom is making significant cuts at Awesomeness, disclosing plans to lay off nearly 100 employees — or around half of the digital-media company it acquired last month from NBCUniversal, Verizon and Hearst.
In addition, as Viacom previously announced would happen, former Awesomeness CEO Jordan Levin has left the company.
While sources previously indicated Awesomeness was laying off more than 30 staffers this week, the cutbacks are much deeper than that. According to a notice filed with California’s Employment Development Department, Awesomeness will terminate 50 employees on Oct. 15; 33 who will be let go shortly after Oct. 15; and 15 who will lose their employment on Dec. 31.
Santa Monica-based Awesomeness filed the notice Aug. 16 with the agency under the requirements of the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (Warn) Act, which requires at least 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs. Awesomeness’ filing of the Warn notice was previously reported by Deadline.

When her “not-so-secret admirer” Ben accidentally falls to his death, high-schooler Charley is remarkably blasé about it. In fact, she actually meets a new boy at his wake.
“It’s so messed up having something so tragic and so amazing happening simultaneously,” she says to her best friend. That’s when Ben decides to make a surprise reappearance in her life: as a zombie.
And that’s just the beginning of the trailer for Awesomeness TV’s new show, “My Dead Ex.” Set to premiere its pilot episode at SXSW on March 11, the show follows the two teens as they struggle to understand dating, high school, and their feelings for each other, as the second half of the trailer — which addresses Ben’s resurrection from “a love spell” — suggests the rise of a deeper relationship.

Awesomeness Films president Matt Kaplan has departed the feature division of the Gen Z-leaning media giant to launch his own digital, TV, and film production company called Ace Entertainment.
Throughout his two-year tenure at Awesomeness, Kaplan oversaw the release of nine films, including Before I Fall and You Get Me, with several projects -- including To All The Boys I've Loved Before and My Dead Ex -- yet to come. "Matt helped build a best-in-class film division for Awesomeness that has become a core part of our brand," a spokeswoman told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're excited to extend our relationship with him now as a producer in an overall deal and to build on our existing track record, working on even more projects together as we keep expanding our films business."
