ZACK SNYDER
imxhill12 November 2021
The way this films is shot, the colors, the tone and vibes.. you can just tell this is a Zack Snyder movie. Even though I do think he has some flaws as a filmmaker, I do admire the fact that he has his own style. His own world. Snyder is one of those directors that you can just tell it is his film just by looking at the film briefly.

Watch this if u like snyder or cool visual / shots.

Art, the Zack Snyder way
I_Ailurophile4 May 2021
'Snow steam iron' is a 4-minute short filled with no small bit of blood and violence, a quick revenge flick about the will to survive and persevere, and proclaim one's agency.

It's also, I've realized, the first film from Zack Snyder that I've seen since his 2004 remake of 'Dawn of the dead.' And you know what? It's not bad. It tells as much of a tale as it needs to in 4 minutes, with costumes, makeup, props, and sets that look great. For as minimal as the narrative is, it's effective, and conveyed reasonably well in this series of scenes. Hats off!

Yet I also don't need to have seen more than mere clips of Snyder's other movies to know that the slow motion effect is seemingly characteristic of his work - and if we take that away here, 'Snow steam iron' would be about 2 minutes long. The director's penchant for style over substance has this picture riding the fine line of "just right" that cuts through adjacent critiques of "too much flash" and "too little meat." Between slo-mo, close-ups, and the indescribably waxy veneer given to the production, I'm reminded of an over-the-top advertisement for high-end fragrances, the sort that tries to impress viewers with a starlet and fancy imagery without actually selling the product. The How can be as important as the What, yes, but there has to be balance.

The simple narrative he's written here is strong enough that Snyder's method as a filmmaker works - barely - for 'Snow steam iron.' But at the same time, if this sample is truly a reflection of how his full-length films pan out, I have a hard time believing I'd be able to sit through them.

a short film by zack snyder
andrasulthan19 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Snow Steam Iron (2017)" is a short film by Zack Snyder that depicts a violent and gritty story of revenge and survival in a seedy New York City. The film follows Lin Woo (Samantha Win), a woman who is forced into prostitution by a ruthless mafia boss (Jen Kuo Sung), and who decides to fight back against her oppressors with the help of a gun and a meat cleaver. The film is shot entirely on an iPhone, and features stunning visuals, intense action, and a haunting score by Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL).

In this review, I will analyze the film's strengths and weaknesses, and give my overall impression of it.

The film's main strength lies in its visual style. The cinematography by Zack Snyder is impressive and innovative, using various techniques such as slow motion, close-ups, and color filters to create a striking and immersive atmosphere. The film has a distinctive aesthetic that sets it apart from other crime films, and showcases Snyder's talent as a filmmaker. The editing by David Brenner is also effective and seamless, creating a fast-paced and coherent narrative that keeps the audience engaged. The sound design by Scott Hecker and Chuck Michael is also superb, using both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds to enhance the mood and tension of the film. The music by Tom Holkenborg is also fitting and powerful, using a mix of orchestral and electronic elements to create a dark and dramatic score.

The film's main weakness lies in its narrative substance. The story by Zack Snyder is very simplistic and predictable, following a basic revenge formula that offers no surprises or twists. The film lacks depth and originality, relying on familiar tropes of the crime genre without adding anything new or meaningful. The dialogue by Zack Snyder is also minimal and generic, consisting mostly of grunts, screams, and threats that do not reveal anything about the characters or their situations. The characters by Zack Snyder are also flat and one-dimensional, with no backstory or personality beyond their appearance and function. The violence by Zack Snyder is also excessive and unnecessary, showing graphic scenes of bloodshed and gore that do not serve any purpose other than shock value.

In conclusion, "Snow Steam Iron (2017)" is a film that showcases Zack Snyder's skills as a filmmaker, but also exposes his limitations as a storyteller. The film is a visually stunning but narratively hollow experience that does not offer anything new or profound to the audience. The film is an ambitious attempt to create a cinematic masterpiece with minimal resources but a superficial one that lacks substance and originality.

WB Doesn't Deserve Zack Snyder
MelloMovieReviewReturns25 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start with my review of this short film. It's very noir in it's style and disturbing in it's imagery. Shouldn't art stick with you? Cut you emotionally? That's what Snyder does, he makes art not entertainment. It can be both if you have the taste for it. This revenge plot 'feels' deep, the pain our hero endures is raw. It stings. She exacts her revenge, or is it her only way to survive? I interpret the catfish as a prisoner. A fish out of water. She couldn't live that way anymore, she can either let the world kill her, or she can take control and go out her own way, much like his daughter's suicide. I'm sure there's a parallel here.

As far as Snyder's work at WB. Every time he makes a "Director's Cut" its infinely superior to the studio cut. WB didn't deserve this artist. He needs a studio that will let him spread his wings. Snyder doesn't need 100M dollars of VFX. He lives in the wrong time. He did this with practical effects and no money with an iPhone. Snyder doesn't make films to entertain you, he's making art that will last. I've seen all the MCU films once and never remember them or watch them again, they don't stay in my mind days later. Snyder's films cut your soul and whether you hate them or love them, you don't forget them. That's art.

This is an impressive short especially since it's shot on an iPhone. The short has beautiful imagery and lighting. The snow was has a cool effect on the feel of the film.

Little visual masterpiece
sherylgazza22 November 2020
An unexpected visual masterpiece considering this was filmed on an iPhone, Zack Snyder's Snow Steam Iron is a twisty, thematically engaging, impressively crafted short film that manages to deliver on great storytelling and performances in just a measly running time of four minutes without any dialogue whatsoever.

Masterpiece!
xacraj3 December 2020
Just like Snyder's all other works, this movie is also a masterpiece, but the thing is, its shot on an iPhone, with the victory of release the snyder cut movement and this short, its proven that his haters are just senseless mindless herd followers. Zack and Deborah are true genius and the best at what they do!

Maybe works as a trailer
Horst_In_Translation19 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Snow Steam Iron" is a new short film that was only released exactly a month before I am writing this review. These four minutes are the newest filmmaking effort by (not always) respected director Zack Snyder and to be honest if a film like 300 is still one's career-defining effort, then that is not a good sign. But back to this one here: Yes it is indeed very short and the particular shots/scenes seem so randomly thrown together that the outcome is simply not great. No famous actors in here, but those who are don't really make a difference either, which is admittedly also due to their material. The scenes look fairly stylish at times and if these had been appetizers for a full feature film, then this could have been interesting. But as this is the film itself already, it is another style over substance work for Snyder. I am also not sure what is really special about this one here. Maybe the ways in which it was filmed or released? It sure isn't that justice was done atmospherically to the 3 terms in the title. So the film could, probably should, have been named differently. Anyway, I did not enjoy the watch and give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended.
