Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television – Nonfiction is building up its nonfiction roster.
The division, which is behind series including American Idol and 90 Day Fiancé has struck two overall deals with Nick Rigg’s Brass Monkeys Media and Royal Malloy’s Royal Entertainment Group.
The deal sees Brass Monkeys Media and Royal Entertainment Group use Sony’s infrastructure and production capabilities and gives Sony access to Rigg’s lifestyle formats and competition shows, and Malloy’s expertise in male-driven programming.
Rigg was previously Head of Unscripted for Diga Studio, where he oversaw series such as Selling the Hamptons for Max, Million Dollar Beach House for Netflix, America’s Big Deal for USA, Hot Ones: The Game Show for truTV, and The Flipping El Moussas for HGTV. Indican Pictures will distribute Jonathan Holbrook's Beloved Beast. To show in theatres and on Digital platforms, Beloved Beast takes a note from John Carpenter's Halloween (1979) as a deranged individual escapes from a local mental hospital. On the loose, this strange character goes on a murder spree, in a small town. Beloved Beast stars: Meredith Binder (The Oregonian), Tabitha Bastien (The Wonderland Murders), Sheila Houlahan and Lance Carver. Larry Brand, a writer-director whose credits include Halloween: Resurrection and several Roger Corman films, died peacefully February 9 at his home in Hollywood. He was 69.
Brand was born in New York City on December 16, 1949. He grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens and attended City College in New York before making his way to Los Angeles in 1974. His first job in the film industry was as driver and production assistant to the legendary Orson Welles. Brand wrote his first feature film, the psychological thriller Backfire with frequent collaborator Rebecca Reynolds. From there, he expanded his skills in directing and acting. He collaborated with indie film producer Roger Corman on movies including The Drifter, Masque of the Red Death and Overexposed.
