The series of novels entitled "The Killings Of The Plague Doctor" was originally intended to be depicted onscreen as a detective crime show. Budget and time, however, did not allow for the extra filming that would have been required, so the producers decided to change this to a more original idea of hugely popular fictional stories, much like that of the Harry Potter series.
Surveilled comprised a very international cast, with actors flying to the UK to work on the film from Australia, New York, Austria and the Netherlands. The only non-British actors to not fly in were German actress Melanie Aumann (Dr Laura Carlyon) who already resides in London, and New Jersey (USA) actress/presenter Kelly Calabrese (Jessica Moor) who recorded her own presentation performance.
The name of the fictional town of Clairmont was taken from Montclair in New Jersey, where producer/screenwriter Caroline Spence spent some time in the 1990s. She simply switched 'Mont' and 'clair' to create the name.
Popular punk band ANGRY from Essex, UK, performed their track 'Tiptoe' in an opening scene featuring actors Gavin Gordon and Dywayne Thomas. At the time of filming the track was unreleased. The name 'Angry' is derived from band members Anne Vallance and Gary Smith: 'Anne-Gary'.
