On paper, A Skin So Soft will probably look like another one of Canadian auteur Denis Côté’s off-center, exploratory documentaries. The filmmaker’s tenth feature follows the daily routine of six Quebecois bodybuilders, and their almost maniacal dedication to the art of building the perfect body. But we know, both from his skewed fictions and from his tilted documentaries, that there’s always more to his films than meets the eye. As it turns out, this free-form documentary, shot with a minimal crew for a ridiculously small amount of money, is out to find the people that are hidden inside the body armor—the workout as revelation of an identity, a personality, the muscles as a mere facade for the person inside. It’s a film that Côté himself describes as one of his personal favorites, something that has been confirmed by A Skin So Soft’s warm reception...

This year’s AFI Fest will play home to some major contenders, thanks to a sterling World Cinema lineup that boasts no less than 13 official Best Foreign Language Film Oscar entries from around the globe. The annual Los Angeles festival has announced its latest picks, including a World Cinema section rounded out by 30 films from 39 different countries. Of those films, over a dozen are already in contention for Oscar attention, from festival favorites like “A Ciambra,” “Foxtrot,” and “A Fantastic Woman” to new works from modern masters like “Happy End” and “Thelma.”

When Barry Jenkins’s “Moonlight” was awarded the Oscar for best picture in early 2017, some critics rushed to see it as a sign that the film community had adapted to the need for more expansive stories about sexual identity. Groundbreaking as it may have been, “Moonlight” was certainly not the first successful feature to address the subject, but its popularity epitomized a positive trend in recent cinema.
It should come as no surprise that an arthouse festival so receptive to the changes in the cinematic universe as Locarno would be responsive to these trends. The true highlight of Toronto International Film Festival every year is the Wavelengths program, an expertly curated selection of the most boundary-pushing cinema from around the world. Led in particular by the programming vision of Andréa Picard, also known for her contributions to Cinema Scope since its inception, it acts as its own mini-festival of sorts. We were lucky enough to receive a personal preview of this year’s exciting looking batch of films from her.
Can you talk about some of the pairings; for example Blake Williams’ Prototype with Erkki Kurenneimi’s Florence or Denis Côté’s A Skin So Soft with Kazik Radwanski’s Scaffold?
I’ve always tried to curate the program as much as possible. There are infinite possibilities out there and sometimes I’m not even looking for a theme, but a theme will emerge. Sometimes things lend themselves to make a really great programme.

There is a problem with A Skin So Soft and it goes somewhat deeper than the very thing that that title so poetically calls to mind. The work of Canadian filmmaker Denis Côté could, without great effort, be organized into two distinct types: narrative dramas that focus on human relationships under duress and hyper-real, video installation-styled documentaries (Bestaire, Joy of Man’s Desiring). His latest is of the latter variety, a slightly surreal anthropological study of one of mankind’s oddest subcultures: bodybuilding or, perhaps more accurately in this case, male bodybuilding. That’s all well and good. The troublesome part is that instead of taking the familiar and subverting it — as in his previous documentaries — A Skin So Soft takes an already alien world and dehumanizes it further. However, if audiences can forgive that — and that might be a big ask for some, not to mention a little unsympathetic...
