Nightmare on Steroids
pgeary60011 June 2021
Very fine performance by Cavan Clerkin as the hapless call centre drone who gets sucked into an ever worsening nightmare via a dubious personal trainer. The sound design is particularly effective, with the sounds of the weights hitting the racks enough to make you recoil from the deafening clatter.

Whatever the opposite of a feel-good film is, this is it, but it holds one"s interest as the protagonist's dilemma becomes increasingly desperate. The black and white cinematography serves the bleak setting and storyline well. The abrupt ending will leave some viewers frustrated, but is certainly preferable to a pat and predictable conclusion that would have been the choice of a Hollywood studio.

Interesting movie that self-destructs in the 3rd act
Jay_Rusty11 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is very atmospheric and gritty. The soundtrack is very good. The acting is strong. But script decisions in the 3rd act are a complete letdown. I feel robbed of a final confrontation that never materialized. I appreciate ambiguity and open-ended situations but this one was just ridiculous and weird for the sake of being weird. For the record, I believe that Terry/Trevor was real and not imaginary. This is not a Fight Club situation but the writers simply didn't know how to end the film; they painted themselves into a corner and it all ended with a whimper and not a bang. Unsatisfying and not in a good way.

OK, but...
rocknrelics30 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not Gerard Johnson's best, but still worth a watch. However, one thing that really bugs me are cop out endings, and that's what this film has, and it ruins the film.

Also, there's a lot of padding, 20 minutes could have been knocked off the runtime, and the film wouldn't have been any the worse for losing the time.

Hats off to Craig Fairbrass who's good, and in particular for me, Cavan Clerkin who is superb and utterly convincing.

There are quite a few things that aren't explained, which again bugs me.

Worth watching for Cavan Clerkin alone, but this isn't as good as 'Hyena'.

Disappointing

I find the film a bit disappointing because the story ends abruptly without any resolution. The final fifteen minutes create so many questions that are not answered.

Hard but worthwhile watch
fisherterence1 April 2021
Thought MUSCLE was going to be another average film but from the first 10 minutes I was hooked on the people involved and the story. The acting was excellent specially Craig Fairbrass. Fine direction and the black and white also added to the movie. Well worth the money to get the dvd and have a look.

going to the gym may be dangerous for your health
dromasca7 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you are a big fan of gyms, then 'Muscle' made in 2019 by English director Gerard Johnson might annoy you. If you are planning to start such activities you may change your mind. The film by the English screenwriter and independent director frontally attacks the myth of the healthy masculinity of these establishments, following their hero in an event that begins as a social drama with accents of family and morals comedy and turns into a psychological thriller with dark shades as their characters and intentions become clearer. 'Muscle' is not a perfect film and at times explores the limits of what is acceptable or bearable on screen, but it boldly tackles a topic worth considering and offers many interesting ideas and cinematic moments.

Simon, the hero of the film (Cavan Clerkin) is a small tele-marketing clerk who works in an oppressive environment like those who appeared in the movies of the middle of the last century, with workers under constant threat of dismissal if they do not reach their quotas, with a stressful supervisor and especially with a whiteboard on which the sales of each of the workers are marked with lines. His marriage is not going well either, and his self-confidence is zero. A savior seems to appear in his life after Simon, following a TV commercial enrolls at a local fitness room where he meets the charismatic Terry (Craig Fairbrass) who starts playing the role of personal trainer and spiritual mentor. As his muscles thicken due to exercise but also to 'nutritional supplements' and injected steroids and hormones, Simon's self-confidence increases and professional results are not long in coming. But something very wrong is happening with his personality and in his personal life. He becomes irritable and aggressive, Sarah, his wife (Polly Maberly) cannot stand and leaves him, he enters in conflict with co-workers and is fired. Again Terry seems to offer him the 'lifeline' but his intrusion into Simon's life becomes deeply annoying. And then, Terry's biography hides secrets while the circumstances and activities in which he drags the former office worker, now a 'mensch' with swollen muscles and a thick neck, become more and more dubious. Is there any chance to get out?

The story is harsh and maybe, it must be said, quite predictable. The completely open finale puzzled me a bit, the movie seems to end five minutes before the real end. From a cinematic point of view, however, the achievement is remarkable. The image signed by Stuart Bentley uses black and white very suitable for the subject and atmosphere and offers some memorable frames. Cavan Clerkin creates a memorable role, in which the transformation from a fat middle-aged clerk into a stocky, muscular man included physical training added to his acting talent. Craig Fairbrass is extremely appropriate for the role of Terry, although the screenwriter Gerard Johnson was a bit stingy with this character whose past I would have liked to know more about. Undoubtedly however, with 'Muscle', director Gerard Johnson shows us that he is a filmmaker who deserves to be watched.

Not too bad
ingamazonaite18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Movie starts slow, but I think it's necessary, if you wanted really understand how boring and grim Simon's life was. Its black and depressing, somewhere in grey city. And job,and routine- just grim with no hope.

And when he mets this man at the gym it gets really scary.

I loved movie, because it managed to show that ugliness of life; it was good acting, because I really thought, you know, i wouldn't want to meet this man, it was kind of real scary feeling.

I am very disappointed about the end. That is major problem here- what happened?

I would recommend this movie to 40+ audience, not for young people .

Seems to simply stop just as it's beginning to gather momentum
jimbo-53-18651116 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Simon is your average every day Joe who works in sales (a job he hates) though he does have a steady home life with his wife/partner Sarah. Simon decides that he needs to get fit and joins a gym where he is quickly taken under the wing of Terry. Initially Simon is grateful for Terry's help, but this help comes at a cost as Simon's life slowly begins to spiral out of control...

Muscle is a relatively interesting film (focussing on a man who becomes semi-obsessed with getting fit, whilst still going out boozing and trying to have a home life with Sarah). Simon could just about manage to juggle the latter 2 elements, but throwing a third component in the mix seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

This all proves too much for Sarah and she promptly leaves Simon and isn't seen or heard from again. Upon learning this, Terry offers to move in with Simon to help him out of the financial burden that Sarah leaving has bestowed upon Simon. This, for me, is when we start to really see Terry's true colours; he's something of a control freak and a manipulator. He doesn't like Simon doing anything that doesn't involve him (and makes this clear on several occasions). I'm fairly sure the drug he gave Simon had violence as one of its side effects (his violent outburst at work cost Simon his job which meant he was ultimately dependent on Terry) increasing Terry's element of control.

From this point onwards, Simon is estranged from his friends and starts doing shady work for Terry; by this point Simon wants out, but can't seem to find a way to remove himself from Terry's influence.

What I will say about this film is that it keeps building and building and when we start to learn more about Terry the film really was starting to turn a corner, but it is single-handedly ruined by the ending; it just stops without explaining anything? What had gone on in Terry's past? Why did he target Simon? The police seemed to know him under his real name of Trevor Richards, but don't explain how they know him or what he had been convicted for in the past?

Despite solid performances from Craig Fairbrass and Cavan Clerkin, the whole production is undermined by the lame ending (if you can even call it an ending). Maybe the filmmakers were concerned about the film's running time (which comes in close to 2 hours) and just thought "Hey let's wrap it up here", but for me they could have trimmed some of the middle of the film (the numerous orgies were repetitive and didn't add a great deal) and perhaps spent more time examining Terry's character and background - he's an interesting character who sadly wasn't explored or examined enough in my opinion.

There was a lot of potential here which unfortunately was wasted which is a great shame.

A beautifully shot compelling and original journey.
gerrydaly-3915020 June 2021
A middle aged man crying on the way to a job he hates, is one of multiple images in this excellent nightmare that remains in the mind long after the film's end. Craig Fairbrass career best departure from 2 dimensional meatheat goons ,walks a line between being tender , menacing , funny and mysterious whilst Cavan Clerkin's metamorphosis is subtle and intriguing. There were so many opportunities where this film could have gone full blown Channel 5 after the plot was established, but it holds its nerve and stands its ground to remain original to the last scene. It's a very modern story which I'm sure will gather traction and status over the next few years as it is discovered. We must remember Sexy Beast was all but binned until other countries discovered it, it later was represented to us as a well loved classic. Without A listers to attract you, dream sequences to impress you , this black and white tale reveals much in the grey area for you and your friends to discuss. Excellent.

Initial punishing work-out, that sadly runs out of steam.
dolemite7210 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Muscle' finally hits UK shelves (after a 2 year wait) I'm not entirely sure if this was down to distribution, budget, Covid or editing.....Either circumstance could explain the abrupt ending and eleventh hour tonal-shift?

When a aimless forty-something tele-sales worker, Paul decides to join the local gym, he is soon approached by a larger-than-life trainer, Terry (who offers to take our protagonist under his wing) but from the outset appears to have a sinister agenda?

Minus a few details, that's pretty much the plot in a nutshell....and it's in the movies first half, that the characters, dialogue and scenarios feel hyper-realistic. Every little touch rings true and because you know from the outset it's all going to end in tears, the impending (largely implied) 'dread' is almost unbearable, helped along nicely by the black & white photography, destorted (James Wong Howe-style) visuals and a cracking hypnotic soundtrack....Think 'Seconds' (1966) but without the body-swapping.

Alas though, somewhere past the midway mark, such carefully orchestrated threat is replaced with outright menace and pornography. Which is a crying shame, because the performances (Fairbrass, especially) are first rate. The earlier scenes at the gym (nervous glances in mirrors from members both old and new....feel TOO honest) deftly highlight the vanity and insercurity of all those that frequent such establishments.. Most want to change themselves for the better...and some aren't what they appear to be. It's an interesting, fresh observation, but, not unlike a punishing work-out, it runs out of steam near the end.

It's a shame that the film-makers didn't trust it's audience to correlate the time-honoured 'thin-line' between uber-masculinity and homosexuality (without litterally having it spelt out for them) sometimes less is more....and it's a shame that this movie didn't follow it's own message (and reigned it in a touch) The tonal-shift is telling.

As it stands though, for most of it's running time, 'Muscle' is still a powerhouse of a movie, that might have benefitted from implying more than it actually shows. The 'hardcore' sex scenes did little to further the plot (but I guess controversy sells?) Fairbrass should capitalise on the fact that he's much scarier when 'playing it nice' and could easily move up a rung or two in Hollywood as a genuine pressence (as opposed to just playing thugs and bullies) He works much better in the earlier half (a combination of Ben Kingsley's 'Don Logan' mixed with Paddy Consindine's 'Morell') before (sadly) descending into shouty, drug-dealing 'Pat Tate' territory in the final third.

Still highly recommended (despite an unresolved ending and descent into outright theatrics in the final third)

ALMOST!!!
carldenton9 February 2021
An excellent subject matter and very thought provoking, at times. Then as the film enters the final turn, it high sides!!! What should of been an ending, any ending other than the limp, pathetic and absolutely ridiculous one given to us. It then becomes an absolute joke! The plot has many flaws but the ending is as if everyone involved contracted Covid-19 and had to self isolate. Don't waste your time, you will never get it back!!

A visceral disturbing and all too truthful film
azanti00295 December 2020
Word of mouth on this had me waiting with anticipation to catch this film and seeing the likes of Fairbrass and Burroughs, two actors whose work I follow, were in it, even more so. Fortunately, I wasn't disappointed.

In case you've missed the one sheet MUSCLE is the next film from force of nature director Gerard Johnson, who isn't afraid to tackle subjects of the masculine stereotype and turn them firmly on their head. For the first twenty minutes or so we follow the life of average joe, Simon (Cavan Clerkin giving a superb performance) a man who works in sales and hates his job, shares a house with his girlfriend where the spark of romance, let alone any love, is long since dead. Simon's idea of rekindling their fires is to offer to order a Chinese takeaway, where as the reality is she can no longer stand the sight of him. Feeling unconfident about his body, and wanting to improve his confidence at work Simon opts to join the local gym, where supposed regular trainer Terry (Craig Fairbrass) sees him struggling and offers to take him under his wing. Initially unsure, Simon agrees and is soon improving his health and beefing up but it's too late to placate his girlfriend who leaves him, but as luck would have it Terry needs a place to stay and is soon spicing up his life with sex parties and lines of charlie as thick as tampons but that's just the start of Simon's problems.

Shot in black and white and with its slow brooding pace in the first half, Muscle may well on the surface, not appeal at first, but it truly is a film worth enduring, because the longer you watch it, the more compelling it becomes and you soon find yourself sharing Simon's loss of control. (The no holes barred sex party sequence is certainly not one to watch with your Mum, a cup of tea and a hobnob) Here the stark but beautiful photography by Stuart Bentley serves the narrative well, giving the film a dark and brooding tone as we snatch glimpses of the unwelcoming industrial landscape that coats the fringes of Newcastle city. Simon's entire life feels like somewhere you wouldn't want to but the film feels as though it could be set in a city anywhere that you know. No shots of the iconic bridge to be seen here, just bleak industrial smoke stacks and bleak run down streets.

The characters that inhabit this world which I've personally had one foot in myself, I can assure you, are all too real and Lorraine Burroughs is almost completely unrecognisable as Crystal, the real power behind Terry's fear earned throne. This character was all too familiar to me and Burroughs nailed her completely. But it is Craig Fairbrass who is the power house engine that propels the narrative of this movie. He's more terrifying here than in any other role. While the character of Terry may, in some respects feel familiar to some of his more well known roles, here Fairbrass plays the insecure man with a deep level of complexity not previously seen before. At one point you nearly feel sorry for him, unable to connect or trust people and rejected by those he loves, only to learn that he too is under a spell of his own. The film is worth watching for the performances of the leads alone. The only thing that let it down for me was the Police station scene where Simon finally goes to make his complaint. The scene with the officer felt out of touch with the modern world and It just wouldn't have been handled as portrayed because of new regulations to handle such a complaint. I found that took me out of the reality of this world a little bit but fortunately the temptation to take this thread further was resisted. As others have said the ending was perhaps a little unsatisfying, but always leave people wanting more eh? If they make a sequel, I will certainly be there to watch it. Recommended.

It's a good movie, with a some what familiar story!
freddy_at_home5 December 2020
This is a good little movie. I've seen the same kind of story before, but still not in a version told like this. I liked it and I know these people, from the real world. There are many of them out there. It had me interested from beginning to the end. It's filmed in black & white, or that kind of style. For me personally I would have had it in colors. But still, I get why the director wanted it. It gets that grit look all over it.

It's easy for many to relate to this movie. We have either been there or know someone who has. It's interesting how things like these in the movie, are related to each other.

Give it a go! I liked it and it's worth watching. I'll give it a good 7/10

Finished without an ending
bedworth24 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I do like Craig Fairbrass films generally, footsoldier etc. However this film looks like it was on a minimum budget and they ran out of money 15 minutes before the ending ! I'd love someone to explain what was in the pictures, what was in the van, why no one is looking for the contents, where's CF gone, what was the point of the film ? If I could give it zero stars I would have, do not waste your time with this one.

Different but just as see Craig fairbrass in new light
mylesjfarrow8 April 2021
Was worried soon as this was in black and white but soon forgot about that film is a dark look at real people. This is very close to real life almost scarily so for me. Excellent plot not fast paced or things exploding this isn't that kind of film. People moaning wanted a action story and this is not that. What's in the van ? That's pretty obvious. What's in the photos again if you watching the film that's petty obvious to. Great film but not everyone will think so.

Good with an anti climatic ending
PHILLK699 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was interested in seeing this because i had heard about Craig Fairbrass; performance and was also a fan of directors Gerard Johnson previous two efforts (Hyena and Tony) Fairbrass is good as the alpha male who manipulates beta male cavan clerkin who's at a cross roads in his life and needs an urgent change. There is some superb cinematography in the movie and i thought the black and white effect really worked, the only gripe is i thought the end was a bit of an anti climax, the last ten minutes were tense but filtered into nothing.

DISAPPOINTING !
darrenjamesfalcus15 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a film that had the potential to be good but fails to hit the mark in the end. It starts well with a stylish Black 'n' White picture which is well shot and captures the mood of the lead protagonists state of mind.

Cavan Clerkin takes the lead as the Mr Average Simon who appears to have moved to The North East of England to take a job in a dead end call centre where selling rubbish products over the phone to the public is the order of the day.

He spends his nights having a few pints with a work colleague then trudges back home to his wife who is equally dissatisfied with life. She wants to move back to London so she can get a job in whatever he chosen field is. The reasons for them being there are never explained but there seems to be a growing enmity because of that.

Simon decides to join a local gym which is full of your boring stereotypical steroid freak types who look to bully Simon. He is determined to not be put off despite the menacing and dismissive attitude of the manager of the gym to lose weight and get in shape.

Whilst training there he meets a unhinged ex squaddie called Terry (Tel), Who regales the younger meat heads with stories of his thuggish ways and casual bigotry of menacing door staff in the "Night Club Scene." The character is played by Craig Fairbrass who does his now usual type cast well worn "Pat Tate" impression.

Terry takes Simon under his wing which then careers into a coercive bullying relationship which Simon goes along with due to his state of mind. You now expect this deranged "Buddy" film to go down that well trodden path but it takes crazy turn, With the film descending into a convoluted mess !

The film is a Hotchpot of ideas thrown together by the director Gerard Johnson which rip off Shane Meadows, Ken Loach, David Lynch respectively. The middle section of the film is the real kicker where the director thinks it is somehow a good idea to go down the "Tinto Brass" route from 1979's "Caligula" with an identical and lurid outcome which is basically "Pornography" !

The last section of the film is equally off putting as there is no satisfactory ending to the film. This is where you are left feeling is there a "Lynchian Allegory" here for us to decipher ? Answers on a postcard...

There is a decent cast here with good performances from Clerkin, Fairbrass and Lorraine Burroughs who is on point as Crystal. It's just a shame the director had to spoil what could have been a decent film.

ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL UK INDEPENDENT FILMS I'VE SEEN IN YEARS
peteroxley2 November 2019
I was fortunate to see Muscle at the BFI Festival in London and what a pleasent surprise it was.The story concerns Simon (Cavan Clerkin) an office worker who is going through a mid life crisis and decides to join a gym. It's not long before he meets Terry (Craig Fairbrass) a trainer who offers to get Simon into shape. When Simon's wife leaves home Terry moves in and that's just the start of his problems. Muscle is a taunt, edgy psychological thriller with some brilliant comedy touches.Written and directed by the talented Gerard Johnson (Hyena) it's a film you cant look away from and has you hooked from start to finish.Cavan Clerkin gives a marvelous performance as Simon while Craig Fairbrass gives one of his best screen performances as the dark and chilling Terry not a man to mess with. Well done to all involved.

Excellent drama around pumping iron.
searchanddestroy-12 January 2022
And also an excellent character study, the tale of the transformation of a man, married with a wife with whom he shares nothing at all and who decides to find a purpose to live, besides his stressful job that always pressurizes him towards performance. The study of human relations, human behavior and pulled from an unusual angle. Craig Fairbrass is outstanding here, for once not in a bad ass role. It's not only a film about bodybuilding, as BODYBUILDER was, but a real drama that also speaks about this sport. It talks about anabolic steroid use in bodybuilding and the dramatic effects on human behavior. I was also amazed by the transformation of the actor playing Simon, I hardly recognized him after 40 minutes, honestly. But if you want to begin training in that sport, maybe this is not the best way to do it; watching this movie, I mean. It denounces a real aspect of bodybuilding, steroid abuse, and it insists heavily on that point. And not only, because it also suggests the fact that this sport stimulazes homosexuality. But I will remind this film as a story about treason, betrayal in friendship. Many things remain unexplained - what the photos are about, what kind of stuff Simon had to smuggle in France, steroids? - but it seems to be the director's trade mark, remember his previous flick HYENA; not the same story but same dark, gloomy, depressing atmosphere and the same directing lines.
