Malaysian horror movie Curse of the Totem, aka Sumpahan Jerunei, draws from 13th-century Borneo sacrifice rituals, and, thanks to Variety, a new image gives a first look at the upcoming horror movie described as an “urban legend story.”
Curse of the Totem “tells the story of Dr. Sani, who goes in search of his wife, who disappeared on a genealogy expedition to study the ancient mythical legend of Jerunei’ Burial Poles of the indigenous Melanau tribe in Borneo. Combing through the Borneo jungle for answers, each member of Dr. Sani’s team experiences inexplicable hallucinations, malicious disturbances and eventually are haunted by unexplained spirits of the dead. Things take a turn for the worse when one of them is completely possessed by evil forces.”
While human sacrifice was outlawed in the 18th century, the Burial Poles still exist today as grave markers, contributing to the true-life origins that inspired this urban legend horror story.

Despite the fact that J-horror is long since dead, for the most part, the genre was always one of the most predominant ones in S/Se Asian, and particularly in the Asean countries, where horror was always quite popular. Recently, S. Korean genre cinema also seems to have made a turn towards the category, probably instigated by the huge success of “Train to Busan“, the sequel of which is also included in the list. Lastly, the trend that started in Indonesia with Joko Anwar‘s remake of “Satan’s Slaves” continued this year, with Kimo Staboel‘s “Queen of Black Magic” while the other member of Mo Brothers, Timo Tjahjanto also presented in an effort in the genre.

Joko Anwar showed his knack for genre filming and for breaking the box office from his debut, “Janji Joni“, and in the last two years, with movies like “Satan’s Slaves” (remake of the cult classic) and “Gundala” has cemented both of this traits, even in an international level. “Impetigore” in particular, apart from Rotterdam, also screened in Sundance, a quite significant feat since the representation of Asian cinema in the particular festival is scarce, to say the least.

Cj-cgv, a sister company within the Cj Group, has acquired or developed multiplex cinemas in multiple developing markets, including Indonesia, Vietnam and Turkey. It has followed those initial moves by developing film distribution and production activities in each of them.
It backed Joko Anwar’s “Satan’s Slaves,” the highest-grossing horror film of all time in Indonesia. Several others have been localized versions of Cj Entertainment’s original Korean-language intellectual properties, including “Sweet 20,” a Vietnamese version of nostalgic hit “Miss Granny.

Welcome back for another round of Severin Round-Up! The fine folks there keep digging through the cinematic tomb in search of treasures. Here’s three more they’ve unearthed:
Satan’s Slave (1980): At this juncture in life, I know next to nothing about Indonesian horror; the remake of this film that came out a short while ago certainly awakened a need to explore further. And while they are ostensibly similar, the original, as it turns out, can’t be beat for atmosphere and chills.

If you like your horror movies super gross, you are in for a treat with director Kimo Stamboel's sophomore solo feature, a loose remake of 1981's Indonesian classic, The Queen of Black Magic. With the world beginning to rediscover this nation's rich history of genre film after the worldwide success of Joko Anwar's incredible Satan's Slaves pseudo-prequel three years ago, now is the time for Indonesian filmmakers to shoot their shot on the international market, and they are not letting the opportunity pass them by. Stamboel takes little more than the title and the presence of a vengeful witch from the original in his new take on the story, making it his own in this incredibly entertaining and gooey spectacle. Upon hearing of the poor...

Kimo Stamboel, one half of Indonesian directing duo The Mo Brothers (Macabre) directs this remake of classic Indonesian horror film The Queen Of Black Magic (Ratu Ilmu Hitam) from a script by Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves).
Families were terrorized at the orphanage. Someone wants them dead, apparently with black magic that is very deadly. She has a grudge and she was also born because of the sins of the orphans who formed her into the Queen of Black Magic.

August’s home media releases are off to a quiet start this week, as we only have a handful of titles heading to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday. One of this writer’s favorite films of 2020, Swallow, is coming home on both formats, and Joko Anwar’s remake of Satan’s Slaves (another great film!) is also hitting Blu and DVD this week as well. Scream Factory is set to unleash The Soul Collector on Tuesday, and if you happened to miss it on the network, HBO is releasing the first season of His Dark Materials on various formats, too.
Other Blu-ray and DVD titles arriving on August 4th include Coma, Gates of Darkness, Limbo, and The Haunting of Molly Bannister.
Coma: Steelbook Edition
After a tragic accident, a young architect wakes up in a dystopian world: Coma. Here, reality is made from the memories of people who have fallen into a comatose state.

Horror movies, according to Katinka Van Heeren in Contemporary Indonesian Film: Spirit of Reform and Ghost from the Past, are like a parade which displays—or sometimes questions—many social taboos in our society. Indeed, ghosts, demon, devil or other antagonists in horror movies may reflect the deepest fear hidden at the heart of our society. Horror movies are potent cultural indexes, because they represent the moral signs of the time in a society. The old and the new versions of “Pengabdi Setan” (Satan’s Slave) are the case in point.
Here are the things to consider. The first version of “Pengabdi Setan”, directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra, was released in 1980. During that time, the New Order regime (1967-1998) was playing a dominant role in formulating and...

Grim Fairy Tale: Anwar Gets Garish in Excessive, Entertaining Horror Film
While Indonesian cinema has become more prominent on the festival circuit over the past several years, in part thanks to The Raid films from Gareth Evans and increased art-house fare, director Joko Anwar has built an increasingly prolific filmography in his native country, specializing in genre. Following the success of his 2017 remake Satan’s Slaves, Anwar’s latest, Impetigore (which roughly means “skin puppet”), landed at Sundance.
An exercise in creeping dread which explodes into a soap opera of exposition wherein tradition greets modernity in interesting fashion, Anwar’s latest is a lot of fun, even considering its excessively hysterical narrative which takes so many last-minute twists it nearly, but not quite, derails.…...

There's a select club of people who make feature films based on their dreams. It's a hard sell because whilst everybody likes the idea of tapping into the unconscious it's difficult to put numbers on that. In Indonesia, however, there's a bit more respect for this approach to storytelling than in the West, and Joko Anwar made such a splash with Satan's Slaves that it's comparatively easy for him to find backers. The result is a film which, though it it's narratively simplistic and suffers from a weak ending, has an emotive quality that is almost folkloric in character. It taps into deep, Jungian terrors and turns confusion into an asset.
Like Satan's Slaves, this is a film about a family legacy, though at the outset heroine Maya (Tara Basro) knows nothing of her family. She's been raised by a relative who is no longer around and doesn't even know.

Prolific hitmaker Joko Anwar further cements his reputation as one of the non-English-speaking world’s foremost fantasy filmmakers with “Gundala,” an action-packed and emotionally satisfying adaptation of the treasured Indonesian comicbook created by Harya “Hasmi” Suraminata. Set in a bleak future-now Jakarta, where the lightning-powered superhero is the city’s last hope against corrupt politicians and a megalomaniac crime boss, “Gundala” packs a few too many characters and side-stories into the mix but as the first entry in a planned series it’ll do very nicely. On the strength of this, a successful franchise with strong international appeal could be in the making. After attracting 1.7 million admissions in domestic theatrical release in late 2019, Anwar’s latest hit will land on Well Go USA’s streaming platform on July 28.

Joko Anwar scored Indonesia’s highest-grossing horror hit ever with “Satan’s Slaves,” a remake-slash-prequel to Sisworo Gautama Putra’s beloved if campy 1980 original. Already another big success at home, his followup “Impetigore” is likewise a rebooting tribute to past celluloid horrors, given the familiar feel to its tale of a prodigal-daughter heroine returning to a native village that’s cursed by black magic.
Less dependent on jump scares than “Slaves” (though there are still a few), this handsome and atmospheric production is good, sometimes grisly fun that’s not terribly scary, particularly once hectic climactic events prove less suspenseful than the slow-burn buildup. Despite doing huge box office in Asia (where it opened after its premiere in Sundance’s midnight section), “Impetigore” probably won’t be Anwar’s breakout moment among Western genre fans, though he’ll surely have one sooner or later.

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has acquired all rights in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. to “Impetigore,” the hit horror movie by Indonesian genre-meister Joko Anwar. After placing in the box office top five at home in 2019, the film had its international debut in Sundance this year.
The film is a horror-thriller about a woman who discovers that her neighbors think she is cursed and want to kill her. Writer-director, Anwar called the film “my love letter to horror movies I grew up with, slashers, ghost stories, wrapped in a tragic family drama not unlike my family.”
The film, which also carried the local title “Perempuan Tanah Jahanam,” stars Tara Basro (“Satan’s Slaves”), Marissa Anita, (HBO Asia’s “Folklore: A Mother’s Love”), Ario Bayu (“Dead Time”), veteran Christine Hakim, and Asmara Abigail. She previously starred in Anwar’s “Satan’s Slaves...
