Based on an Uncredited true story
ajyun12 January 2022
Look up Asha Gond and Ulrike Reinhard (German Writer) and the story behind Janwaar Castle Skatepark. It's ridiculous that they aren't credited.

The actors in the film do a good job but the way they address the complex social issues of india's caste system is pretty Disney-esque. I do like that they chose Amy Maghera for the lead since she is actually half Indian and Rachel Sancheeta Gupta is very good as Prerna. The supporting cast is also believable in their roles. Why they didn't use the real Skater Girl Asha Gond that can actually skate as the main character is a puzzle much akin to many of hollywood's sad choices of casting.

Another blackfaced fair girl playing a rural Indian saved by a foreigner.

I am a British Indian and this movie did not relate.

Hopefully, it may inspire some.

A BEAUTIFUL COMING OF AGE TALE SET IN A RURAL VILLAGE OF RAJASTHAN
Skater Girl is a movie that focused mainly on a rural poor teenage girl who had no idea what to become and achieve in life and is soon introduced to the world of skateboarding.

Okay so the plot felt average to me nothing new except the sport of skateboarding being included.

It also had scenes that touched caste discrimination and inequality topics but it was just touch an go situation.

There is a scene where the British Indian lady asks to the lead actress "is the caste system still relevant?" And the answer comes in as "Nobody talks about it but still follow it" I felt like that was a good line.

The lead actor and newcomer RACHEL SAANCHITHA GUPTA as PRERNA is brilliant, very convincing and is ofc the heart of the movie but the subcharacters were equally convincing for me especially SUBODH who was a very likeable character and was portrayed nicely by VINAYAK GUPTA.

AMY MAGHERA (as the British Indian) and JONATHAN READWIN (an American friend of the londoner) did their part well too.

The character arc of prerna was intriguing and compelling to watch.

Be it finding her passion, her first taste of freedom or overcoming her fear.

A nice brother sister relationship is also there are as part of the subplot.

Songs were decent but imo they didn't sync with the scenes except the MAARI CHALANGEIN song that was a really good song and went hand in hand with the scenes.

Visually good too some shots were just brilliant.

Only the screenplay felt a little bit flawed to me like the movie was convincing on some points but other times it felt forced.

That's how I felt it

Overall it's an enjoyable coming of age sports drama that was worth my time.

Hoping that it also will be worth yours too.

Better than expected

Warning: Spoilers
This was a lot better than I expected it to be. I like watching movies based in other countries because I like learning about other cultures and feel like I did learn a bit. I cried towards the end when her dad burned her skateboard. Great acting all around and nice simple plot. I think the only disappointment was during the championship I really thought she would do more tricks but she mainly just skated around for the full 45 seconds.

This is just a great important movie. Well I know it gets cliched and exaggerated sometimes but whatever it's just amazing, touching and inspiring. The story is great and has a nice important message about girl empowerment and following your dreams. The cast is awesome and real. Skater Girl is an emotional uplifting well made film that deserves better recognition, go see it now.

American Dream - what saviour BS
nadiamfreeman21 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Two westerners come to a small Indian village that has huge challenges including that local kids cannot afford uniforms, text books and families are struggling to feed themselves due to debt. So the hero westerners buy the children skateboards. They then get Indian Government money to put in a skatepark for the village that does not yet have running water and sanitation. Everyone is happy.

Gets three stars because at least the filming and child actors were really good.

'Skater Girl' Wins Us With Its Warmth & Sincerity.

A Village Girl Dreams on Wheels.

Skater Girl has the heart at its right place and deserves a watch.

Story follows the usual graph of rise, fall and rise,...but *it's the effort* to showcase a sport like *skating* in the small town that does wonders for the story.

Amateurish treatment
lahotianil28 June 2021
Subject of movie is good but direction is amateurish. Editing of movie is poor. Siblings part reminds of 'Dhanak' movie which was a delight to watch. Skater girl is boring, over rated by critics.

Good, touching simple movie. Turn your brain off and just enjoy the emotion
pcleary9928 June 2021
Didn't expect much, but enjoyed watching this one. I enjoy watching films in other cultures or languages. Decent acting in this one. Cinematography is par. Script is basic and nothing new. You will enjoy the movie if you don't get to judgy. A westerner coming to save the day with western skateboards and safety equipment that per set probably costs what a family probably makes in a year is demeaning. But, you do feel the sense of joy in the kids skating which is pretty universal in all kids. Not sure once the excitement of the film and all the crew leave how people are going to afford the skateboards and equipment. I also wonder how long the park is going to last. I hope they didn't slap this one up just for the movie and the concrete starts falling apart after one year. I know what I would bet on . . .

Substantial amounts of Magic Weaved on screen !!
madhukar3017 June 2021
The first forty minutes of skater girl is Pure Magic however we put it. Director Manjari Makijany directorial debut, after working as a production assistant in various big budgeted Blockbuster Hollywood ventures, pulls in the right cords to impress the viewers. Skater Girl is pretty ambitious project for a debutant, but the movie is genuinely engaging and touching with highlights on several sub plots in the form of patriarchy, poverty, discrimination, caste system and child marriage to name a few, that still plagues the villages in India. The vision of the movie is to be applauded and appreciated indeed.

Cinematography is brilliant, the angles and the amount of light entering the frames is just perfect. Screenplay is well written, though the storyline is cliched a bit or doesn't surprise the viewer after about an hour into the movie as things run in perfect text book symmetry sans twists or turns. Editing has some issues towards the end. However the production design, costumes and makeup are just top class. Music and sound design adds a rustic touch to the movie and helps tremendously to the storytelling. The characters and the actors of Skater Girl are the soul to the movie, with top class performances from almost everybody in the cast. Debutant and lead Rachel Saanchita Gupta stunned me with her performance, her expressions and her portrayal of emotions can easily fill a notebook. Stunning and a terrific debut performance in short.

Overall, Skater Girl draws on real-life stories of skateboarding entering rural India in the past decade including (though not credited in the movie) the saga of Ulrike Reinhard, a German lady who reportedly got skateboarding to the Madhya Pradesh village Janwaar the film's "no school, no skateboarding" sign is definitely taken from Janwaar for sure. I highly recommended the movie for family audiences. Though cliched a bit, Skater Girl, still packs enough firepower to entertain the audiences for over 109 minutes. 7.3 stars out of 10 for the portrayal of the dreams and emotions of the downtrodden masses.

Family movie!

Good movie to watch in the family circle. The first thing I went to see was if the film was filmed after a true event, but it wasn't. But no matter the movie is great, I recommend it!

Nice surprise.

I really liked this movie. The main actress really lifted up the movie a notch. Nice Sunday afternoon movie. Gives you a good feeling with some emotions. It does miss something to greatness but I don't know what. I hope to see more of the main actress.

On a personal note, I would have liked it if see did a bit better at the end. (skating)

Another white saviour movie
danielastica19 June 2021
This movie is mostly about the British woman who saved Indian children form their negligent parents and adults in general... yes, because all the adults in third world countries don't know what is best for their children so they really really really need another white person to go and teach them what to do.

Magnificent...
RosanaBotafogo26 June 2021
Beautiful film, a biography, not "credited" of Asha Gond, and Ulrike Reinhard, the real creator, a business consultant and German activist, a beautiful film, sport as the matrix force to conquer machismo, as members of superior castes they don't get special treatment, girls do, one of the skatepark's rules is "Girls First" - that is, if there are no skateboards for free, a girl can ask a boy to give her his skateboard and he has to agree. .. Magnificent...

Emotional good story, showing contemporary indian society and rural facilities as well. But when the story goes the sincerity breaks and the story moves. But treat to watch. Not time wasting thing. Should watch. Good child actors as well.

Brave Attempt With Wonderful Direction And Hard-hitting Performances
ketgup8317 June 2021
Have you ever felt the excitement, emotion, curiosity, feel-good factor when you do something which you are passionate about ? Skater Girl is a riveting drama of a simple village girl who follows her passion to skate board as it elevates her feeling to another level.

While few parts India has developed in terms of mindset over caste, culture and religion, the other part is still cruising along the issues of women equality, early-age marriage and caste disparity. In this part of India, it becomes difficult to nurture your dreams and take it forward to ultimately realize it. Set in the remote village of Rajasthan, Khempur, Prerna (Rachel Saanchita Gupta) desires to learn skateboard encouraged by Jessica (Amy Maghera), a Londoner who visits the village in order to know about her father's early life. Jessica is joined by Erick (Jonathan Readwin) who teaches at a village school. When Prerna watches Erick doing some tricks with Skateboard, she feels the urge to learn the game. Jessica and Erick realizes the potential and feel that a platform should be built in the village where the kids can learn the game and participate in the skateboard competition. However, Prerna faces the challenges from her father who thinks his daughter should not indulge in this "boys" game and should rather focus on the household stuff.

Directed by debutant Manjari Makijani, Skater Girl takes some freedom to divert away from the sports topic and talks about child marriage, untouchability, male hypocrisy and culture disbelief in the rural part of India (which is still existing). However, the silver lining is that Manjari Makijani and her co-writer, Vinati Makijani, also sheds some light how kids, if guided in right direction and with right platform, can do wonders in their life and can become champion, making their family and country proud. ( I can vouch for Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat in the field of wrestling).

Skater Girl also has few hiccups in terms of predictable writing and few excitements clearly missing, considering it is a sports film but never shy away from keeping you engrossed. The short comings are compensated with the enduring performances by the star cast will leave you satisfied in the end. Music by Salim-Sulaiman, generally used in background, is tuneful and gels well with the mood of the film. Cinematography is spellbinding capturing the essence of village life in its beautiful frame. Art direction is brilliant. The team has actually built a set resembling a skateboarding ring in the village to shoot the film. At the end credits, it is seen that the ring offers free services to the village kids. Dialogues are punching.

Rachel Saanchi Gupta was perfect for the role of a girl who wants to break away from the shackles of society and the clutches of her arrogant father but want to do just skateboard as it gives her an extraordinary feeling. She emotes so well through her eyes and is amazing to watch her act. Amy Maghera surprises as a mentor and displays matured acting. Watch for her. She definitely has long way to go. I liked other actors who does justice to their role which includes Jonathan Readwin, Ambrish Saxena, Swati Das, Vinayak Gupta. Special mention for the veteran actress Waheeda Rehman who shines every times she appears on-screen. I wish she could have more scenes.

Overall, Skater-Girl is a feel-good cinema which succeeds in striking the right chord with captivating message and brave performances. Go for it 3/5

Skater-Girl is produced by Skatepark Films and Mac Productions. The sports drama is currently streaming on Netflix.
