Discovery heads to Cronos with the intention of ending the Klingon war.
This for me is another hit and miss episode that feels largely like an anticlimax to the first series but had some redeeming moments.
There are some good character moments involving Georgiou,Tilly, L'Rell, Burnham and Stamets. The scenes on Cronos look good and the visuals generally are solid. It's hard not to be happy and excited by the final scene, but that very much depends on what follows in series two.
I struggled with the plot, which although nicely parallels the pilot episode, feels like it conveniently finds a resolution and is littered with a number concepts that involve way too much stupidity on the part of the characters for it to be plausible. The writing also contains more of the unsubtle exposition dialogue that has plagued Discovery throughout.
Although Burnham has a strong arc moment as her character comes full circle, she dominates things too much for my liking, with everything seemingly revolving around her, even the principles of the federation. Again her scenes with Ash Tyler were pretty nauseating and I'm hoping the writers permanently move on from this as another failed Trek romance.
I found with this and other episodes of Discovery that the rewriting of Trek canon can work if what we are presented with is good material in its own right, however this first series hasn't shown anything that was worth messing with established franchise continuity. Enterprise was guilty of this but it eventually corrected it's course, so I hope this show either does the same or gets a lot better.
As first seasons go, I found it generally to be a mixed bag. It clearly doesn't want to lose the Trek fan base, but is trying to keep the action on par with the JJ Abrams movies, whilst also trying to tap into the Game of Thrones fans with the amount of similarities in style and shock moments. Personally, I hope they forget about trying to make it dark, complex and emulate other modern shows unless they can find writers who can do it better, because it all feels like it's just being done to tick boxes.
