Top Israeli director Talya Lavie is developing “Seven Eyes,” a feature film based on the gripping story of the female lookout soldiers who were based at the Israel-Gaza border on Oct. 7, when Hamas killed more than 1,200 Israeli civilians.
Entirely staffed by women, that Idf “lookout” unit is stationed by the Nahal Oz Outpost in Southern Israel, near the village which was decimated by Hamas. In the months preceding the attack, these female soldiers consistently reported suspicious activities, indicating that Hamas terrorists were preparing for an attack, said Lavie, an alumna of the Sundance Directors and Screenwriters Lab.
Of the 24 lookout soldiers who were stationed in Nahal Oz on Oct. 7, 15 were killed during the attack, seven were abducted by Hamas into Gaza and two survived. Lavie said the film will follow fictional characters but will be based on true events.

This article contains spoilers for the Nov. 28 episode of “Dancing With the Stars”
Five couples went into Season 32 semi-finals “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday night, with only four slated to compete in the finale next week. But in a major twist, no one went home Tuesday night.
The final contestant’s slot came down to high scorers Ariana Madix and Xochitl Gomez and, to their enormous surprise, fans had voted them both through to the finale.
Alyson Hannigan, who ended the night with the lowest judges’ scores, was so convinced she was going home that she told partner Sasha Ferber after their elegant Waltz,” If that’s my last dance with you, I just want to tell you I just love you so much.” Hough said Hannigan’s the dance, set to “Come Away With Me.” “Comwas her best dance to date and Carrie Ann Inaba praised her “emotional vulnerability.

Harry Jowsey and Rylee Arnold have gotten close over the past few weeks as they compete on Dancing With the Stars!
However, after the two were seen holding hands at a concert last week, the 26-year-old reality star and the 18-year-old pro dancer were the subjects of dating rumors, with many fans actually shipping the two together.
While they have spoken out about said rumors, saying they’re enjoying hanging out and appreciative of the votes and support, they are adding more to what they think of the speculation of their personal relationship in a new interview.
Check out what they said inside…
“I think it’s unfair on Rylee to put, like, pressure on this when it’s her first season,” Harry told Page Six. “And, you know, whatever’s going on behind the scenes is gonna go on behind the scenes.”

Israel has signed a filmmaking cooperation deal with Russia.
The deal, which is understood to have been in the works for fifteen years, was inked by Israel’s Russian ambassador Alexander Ben Zvi and Russian culture minister Olga Lyubimova.
“Now colleagues from Russia and Israel can exchange experiences, create films together, and work with film archives,” Lyubimova said in a post on the social network Telegram. “We look forward to seeing Israeli filmmakers in the competition programs of our international film festivals and in public discussions. We are also preparing to expand the distribution capabilities of Russian-Israeli films.”
Israel has a significant Russian and Eastern European population and – in theory – a collaboration between the two countries would have made sense at any other time. Lyubimova said Israel first initiated the collaboration back in 2009.
But given that Russia is currently facing sanctions from most of Western Europe following its war on Ukraine,...

Eitan Mansuri, who attended Series Mania Festival to pitch season 2 of “No Man’s Land” (pictured), is re-teaming with award-winning Israeli director Samuel Maoz on his next film “It’s Good to Die For Your Country.”
The project will mark Maoz’s follow up to “Foxtrot” and “Lebanon” which won Venice’s Silver and Golden Lion awards, respectively. Mansuri told Variety that “It’s Good to Die For Your Country” will be like the third opus of a trilogy on war, completing “Foxtrot” and “Lebanon.”
“‘Lebanon’ was about being a soldier, ‘Foxtrot’ was about the implication of war on families and ‘It’s Good to Die For Your Country’ will be about trauma itself,” said Mansuri, whose produced Maoz’s last two movies.
While the exact plot remains under wraps, Mansuri revealed that it will revolve around two childhood friends in their late 50’s and 60’s who grew up believing that...

The Match Factory will launch sales on the debut film by Ehab Tarabieh, “The Taste of Apples Is Red,” at the Toronto Film Festival, where the film will be premiering in the Discovery section.

Hot off the success of “No Man’s Land,” Israel’s Spiro Films and France’s Haut et Court TV are re-teaming on “Armageddon,” a sprawling thriller miniseries looking at Christian extremists operating in the Holy Land.
The show is being created by David Ackerman, who previously worked in national security in Israel and went on to pen the film “Blank Bullet” inspired by the story of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, and “Jerusalem,” a gritty geopolitical thriller drama which competed at last year’s Series Mania.
Ackerman is currently writing the script for “Armageddon,” which weaves several characters, including a Christian American priest who travels with a few disciples to the Kibbutz Megiddo. Appearing friendly and charitable, the group starts forging bonds within the small community, including a mother and a son, while pursuing their secret agenda: find the Antichrist who will provoke a war that will fulfil their biblical prophecy...

It’s time to work, bitch. Because it’s Britney Night on “Dancing with the Stars.” Monday’s Week 3 show will be the first time “Dancing” has devoted a night to Britney Spears — also fittingly less than a week after her father Jamie Spears was suspended as her conservator — but it will also go down in the record books with the first dual remote performance in the show’s history.
As previously announced, Cody Rigsby and Cheryl Burke will perform separately from their homes after they both tested positive for breakthrough cases of Covid-19 last week. They were initially assigned a cha-cha but are now performing a jazz routine — the only one this week — almost certainly due to the remote aspect. You don’t need to be in hold in a jazz, ya know? Risby, a Spears stan, and Burke will perform 11th, according to the latter’s Instagram, and will dance to “Gimme More,...

Melanie C danced to a Spice Girls track on the “Dancing with the Stars” Season 30 premiere and now Jimmie Allen is like, “Hold my beer.” The country star is set to hit the parquet to one of his songs on Week 2.
Allen and Emma Slater will perform the rumba to the former’s “Billboard” Country Airplay topper “Make Me Want To” on Monday. The duo scored a 22 for their first dance, the tango, which was the third lowest score of the night, but the rumba could be a hit or a miss for any couple because of the hip action that may be too early in the game for some to nail. The rumba is one of six dances this week, the others being Viennese waltz, foxtrot, samba, tango and cha-cha. Speaking of hip action, Matt James and Lindsay Arnold are the only ones doing samba.

Half of the results on “Dancing with the Stars” are decided by fans voting at home, so it matters how much enthusiasm you can generate with viewers. Each contestant’s YouTube numbers thus might give us a glimpse at their popularity with fans. Of course, we can’t say for sure that the most viewed dances from the season premiere correspond with the most voted-on celebs, especially since voting for week one ended back on Tuesday morning, but these numbers may indicate a few dark-horse contestants we might be underestimating. Scroll down to see the stats and watch the dances.

Following the Sundance premiering “Odessa, Odessa” and Venice title “Land of Oblivion,” French-Israeli filmmaker Michale Boganim is back on the Lido with “The Forgotten Ones”.
The film, represented in international markers by Reservoir Docs, is a heartfelt documentary exploring the systemic discrimination against Oriental Jews in Israel through the story of Boganim’s late father, who emigrated from Morocco and was part of Israel’s lesser-known Black Panthers movement in the 1970s. “The Forgotten Ones,” which world premieres in the Venice Days section Sept. 6, was just acquired by Sophie Dulac Distribution and will be released in France in early 2022.
Boganim, who started developing the film years ago, embarked on a road trip across Israel’s impoverished suburbs along with her young daughter and met Sephardi Jews from different generations whose lives have been shaped in some ways by this discrimination. Many of them are children or grandchildren of people who...

Director Michale Boganim explores her father’s role in Israel’s own Black Panther movement in her new Venice documentary: “The Forgotten Ones”.
The 1950s movement sprang from the Mizrahim community – Jews who were ethnically cleansed from North Africa and the Middle East – who sought refuge in Israel. Battling discrimination, Mizrahi Jews looked to the U.S. Black Panther movement for inspiration, Boganim’s father and his friends fought back, politically and otherwise.
In the documentary, Boganim embarks on a road trip to search for some of her father’s colleagues, taking a tour of Israel’s history and meeting with three generations of Mizrahim in the process.
Boganim, who was born in Israel and later studied in France, won the Gras Savoye award for her student film “Dim Memories,” which was selected for Director’s Fortnight in Cannes. Her first fiction feature, “Land of Oblivion,” which starred “Bond” actor Olga Kurylenko,...

After 10 consecutive days of violence, the renewed Israeli-Palestinian conflict is already considered the worst clash since 2014. For a film community known to be fiercely opposed to the politics led by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers and producers fear the escalation of violence will cause irreparable damage. There have been countless fallouts between Israelis and Palestinians in the region over the last 70 years, but industry executives indicate that the proliferation of social media is taking commentary on the conflict to unprecedented levels.
“Today, because of social media, hatred is spreading much quicker. This is a nightmare, and it will affect relationships in the medium to long term,” predicts Rani Massalha, the Paris-based French-Palestinian producer of Tarzan and Arab Nasser’s “Gaza Mon Amour” which opened at Venice and represented Palestine in the Oscar race this year.

The “Dancing with the Stars” Semi-Finals on Monday night, November 16, started with six contestants and ended with four who advanced to next week’s season finale to compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy. So who stuck around, and who fell just short? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as well as our commentary throughout the night.
The six celebs fighting for those four finale slots were “Bachelorette” star Kaitlyn Bristowe, Disney Channel actress Skai Jackson, “One Day at a Time” actress Justina Machado, rapper Nelly, “Catfish” host Nev Schulman, and figure skater Johnny Weir. Of those, only Skai and Johnny had ever landed in the bottom two before, which seemed like a bad sign since that indicated inconsistent support from fans voting from home. However, Nelly had the lowest cumulative score of any contestant left in the competition, so he needed those fan votes most of all.

The “Dancing with the Stars” semifinalists will have to survive two dances and a double elimination if they want to make it to the final.
The remaining six couples will perform two individual routines on Monday, first a redemption dance of a style they struggled with earlier in the season and then a new style. Two couples will be eliminated, sending four into the final. This would be the second double elimination of the season if the first hadn’t been nixed due to Jeannie Mai‘s withdrawal.
Here are the Week 10 routines:
Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev: paso doble (“Hanuman” by Rodrigo Y Gabriela) and contemporary (“Cowboy Take Me Away” by The Chicks)
Skai Jackson and Alan Bersten: cha-cha (“Move Your Feet” by Junior Senior) and Viennese waltz (“Lonely” by Noah Cyrus)
Justina Machado and Sasha Farber: tango (“El Tango de Roxanne” from “Moulin Rouge”) and...

[Update Nov. 2: Jeannie Mai has withdrawn from “Dancing with the Stars” after being hospitalized over the weekend, so there will now only be one elimination.]
A double elimination means double the dances on “Dancing with the Stars” — but it’s not two whole routines. In addition to their individual numbers, the top nine couples will face off in relays on Monday.
The nine pairs will be split into three relay groups — cha-cha, samba or Viennese waltz — and each couple will perform one at a time during their respective relays. One judge will be assigned to each group and will rank the couples within that group for bonus points. The points will be added to their individual scores and the live votes for the double elimination.
“Dancing” hasn’t done relays in a hot minute, but now’s a good time as any to bring it back since it can’t do team dances because of Covid-19 precautions.

I added up the YouTube views for the first three weeks of dances on “Dancing with the Stars,” and two of the bottom three celebs on the online video platform ended up as the bottom two when judges scores and viewer votes were combined on “Top 13” night. Does that mean YouTube views are a good proxy for audience enthusiasm? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s worth considering the week-four numbers as we head into “80s Night” on October 12, since half of the show’s results are determined by viewer votes.

After three weeks of “Dancing with the Stars” season 29, teenage Disney Channel star Skai Jackson has had a topsy-turvy run with the judges, topping the leaderboard in the season premiere, getting the lowest score in week two, and then receiving one of the lower scores on “Disney Night” as well. But if her road has been a little rocky on the dance floor thus far, you wouldn’t know it from her popularity online. She has generated by far the most YouTube views of any dancer in the competition. Scroll down to see how the celebs’ video totals stack up as of this writing (the numbers go up by the minute).

If you’re tuning in to ABC on Monday to catch “Dancing with the Stars,” prepare to be disappointed. As previously announced, “Dancing with the Stars” is not airing on Monday, Sept. 21 and will instead air on Tuesday, Sept. 22 because of football.

Did we call it or did we call it? Carole Baskin will hit the floor for her second dance on “Dancing with the Stars” to yet another kitty-themed song: “What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones. Tptb can’t stop, won’t stop.
The “Tiger King” star and Pasha Pashkov have the Viennese waltz, which might be slow enough to help them improve on their score of 11 for their paso doble on the premiere. The Viennese waltz is one of seven dances on deck for Week 2 — foxtrot, samba, tango, rumba, cha-cha and jive being the others.
Busting out the tough samba and rumba this early feels wrong, but Skai Jackson has the former and Justina Machado has the latter. Dancing With the Stars is back!
The veteran ABC reality series returned with a new host in Tyra Banks, a new judge in Derek Hough, and some of the most controversial contestants to date.
ABC opted to leave us hanging about who the celebrity dancers would be paired with ahead of the premiere in an attempt to keep people in suspense.
Banks, who has appeared on a string of reality TV series, was visibly nervous upon her debut. There has been a lot of backlash in recent weeks because the show fired Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews.
It's likely she will settle into the role in the coming weeks.
Now, let's move on to the winners and losers of the premiere.

For all the changes “Dancing with the Stars” is undergoing for Season 29, it’s still as predictable as ever. Because “Tiger King” star Carole Baskin is performing the paso doble to Survivor‘s “Eye of the Tiger,” so you can cover that spot on your bingo card now. You know the show won’t be able to resist busting out “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Roar” and “What’s New Pussycat?” the rest of the season. Will she go the whole season (or however long she lasts) dancing to feline-themed songs? Probably.

Right now on Rotten Tomatoes, Netflix sensation “Tiger King” is perched on top of the list of most-viewed TV shows. That is followed by the streaming outlet’s third season of the crime-clan drama”Ozark.” But coming in at No. 3 is the four-part miniseries “Unorthodox,” a coming-of-age story also on Netflix with thriller elements and starring a cast of mostly unknowns set in a community of Satmar Hasidic Jews in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

Exclusive: Production is under way on Israel’s biggest-budget TV drama series, Valley Of Tears, we can reveal.
The ambitious, under-the-radar project set against the 1973 Yom Kippur War, stars Israeli mega-star Lior Ashkenazi (Foxtrot) and comes from in-demand Israeli writers Ron Leshem (Euphoria) and Amit Cohen (False Flag).
Directed and co-created by Yaron Zilberman (A Late Quartet), and based on true events, the Hebrew-language, eight-part miniseries shepherded by WestEnd Films depicts the 1973 Yom Kippur War through the eyes of young combatants. It will follow the stories of three individuals swept away by the ravages of war, and culminates in a climactic battle. We understand each episode will cost in the region of $1M.
Valley of Tears stars Footnote and Big Bad Wolves actor Ashkenazi, Aviv Alush (The Shack), Lee Biran, Shahar Tavoch, Joy Rieger and Ofer Hayoun (Euphoria). A handful of Israel’s most prominent novelists reportedly took part in...

Cluj, Romania – The storm clouds that had spent the better part of the afternoon trundling across Transilvania couldn’t be kept at bay Friday night, though several hundred festival-goers – armed with umbrellas and ponchos – arrived for the opening of the Transilvania Intl. Film Festival hoping for the best.
“People are ready to go on. It’s unbelievable,” said Tiff artistic director Mihai Chirilov, as crowds continued to tramp down the soggy red carpet spread across Piata Unirii (Union Square). “They’re unstoppable.”
Nearby veteran director and festival founder Tudor Giurgiu worked a crowd sprinkled with Romanian stars of the big and small screen. A man dressed as the Pope posed for photos to commemorate the Pontiff’s contemporaneous visit to Romania, while dozens of corporate-branded balloons drifted past the Gothic spire of St. Michael’s Church. Between drags of his cigarette, Chirilov furiously worked his cell phone for the latest weather report.

Madrid — Peru’s La Vida Misma and Paris-based sales agent Luxbox have dropped the first trailer and poster of Melina Leon’s “Canción sin nombre” (“Song Without a Name”), selected this week for the Cannes Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight.
Written by Leon and Michael J. White, “Song Without a Name” sums up some of ambitions and focus of the section under first-time artistic director Paolo Moretti: A first feature, a movie with a strong auteurist voice, and elements of genre in its slow-boiling thriller thrust and dashes of film noir.
“Song Without a Name” is lead produced by La Vida Misma, in co-production with Spain’s Mgc, Peru’s La Mula Producciones and Switzerland’s Bord Cadre, co-producers of “Monos” and “Divine Love,” well received at this year’s Sundance festival, and 2018 Directors’ Fortnight standout “Birds of Passage.”

New policy means Curzon titles will no longer play in Picturehouse cinemas.
UK cinema chain Picturehouse has introduced strict theatrical windows for its venues and is now only programming films that adhere to a 16-week gap between cinema and home entertainment release.
That means any films released with shorter windows or day-and-date, such as all titles distributed by Curzon, including the forthcoming festival hits Girl and The Souvenir, can no longer play in Picturehouse cinemas.
Picturehouse Cinemas is the boutique arm of global exhibitor Cineworld, which is the UK’s second largest multiplex chain. Along with Odeon, the UK’s biggest multiplex chain,...

‘The Aftermath’ with Keira Knightley is another new opener.
Stephen Merchant’s solo directorial debut Fighting With My Family leads the openers at the UK box office this weekend, and will look to dethrone three-time champion The Lego Movie 2 from the summit.
The film, which premiered as a ‘secret screening’ in Sundance this year, follows a family of wrestlers from Norwich, as siblings Saraya and Zak work to make it in the WWE. Screen Stars of Tomorrow Florence Pugh (2016) and Jack Lowden (2014) lead the cast, which also includes Nick Frost, Lena Headey and executive producer and former wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Samuel Maoz brings a weird but exhilarating style to the mysterious story of an Israeli soldier and his anxious parents
Foxtrot is a movie from Israeli writer-director Samuel Maoz that is structurally fascinating yet also structurally flawed: its accumulations of ambiguity and mystery are jettisoned by a whimsical final reveal. But, before the retrospective letdown, there is an exhilarating kind of disorientation as we move from one narrative section to the next.
It is presented in three parts. We see the fraught existence of a successful middle-aged architect and his wife in Tel Aviv whose son is away doing military service; then the fraught existence of this son’s unit, out in the middle of nowhere guarding a border post; and then we are back with the architect and his family. It is a triptych of scenes of which the first and third are very theatrical, like a conventional stage play,...

Nadav Lapid’s astonishing, maddening, brilliant, hilarious, obstinate, and altogether unmissable new film “Synonyms” opens with a sequence that might be described as a sideways attempt at psychic suicide. A twentysomething Israeli traveler named Yoav (extraordinary newcomer Tom Mercier) strides through the rainy streets of Paris in a shaky low-def shot that resembles paparazzi footage of a celebrity trying to leave the press behind. He storms into one of those gorgeous old buildings along the banks of the Seine, digs out the hide-a-key, and opens the door to a cold and cavernous apartment. There’s no couch, no bed, no furniture of any kind, but Yoav doesn’t seem to mind the monastic vibe; the camera relaxes into the refined grammar of contemporary European cinema as he surveys the empty space.
Yoav strips nude in the tub, revealing a soldier’s body, and yanks at his genitals. Then, some rustling from the next room over.
