Nice portrait of a director who did it his way
Woodyanders24 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This 44-minute documentary covers a lot of interesting and informative ground on writer/director Alexander Mackendrick, who was born in America, but raised in Scotland and hence was stubbornly Scottish by nature. Among the things we learn about are that Mackendrick started out in advertising, he made propaganda films during World War II, writing scripts for Ealing Studios, "The Man in the White Suit" was based on people he knew, the difficulty involved in casting the child actress for "Mandy," the two lead characters in "High and Dry" were patterned after him, shooting "Sweet Smell of Success" on location on the streets of New York City as well as working with Burt Lancaster on that particular picture, using doubles for Edward G. Robinson for the movie "Sammy Going South," and how Mackendrick was fired from one film that he was originally slated to direct. Recommended viewing for fans of Mackendrick's work.
