With three seasons and 406 episodes, this series had eluded me, but I thought I'd view this segment for inspiration into my own weight-loss challenge.
Here we meet young Californian Armando, homebound due to being nearly 700 pounds but now realizing that "if he doesn't make a change, he'll die."
Armando describes a relatable pattern -- he'd eat to feel better, only to ask himself, "Why did I do that?"
Yep, "food was my comfort," he says, and many of us can identify.
While one can sympathize with the protagonist, this segment is frustratingly light on psychology. How, exactly, did Armando's weight problem spiral so out of control? What fueled his need for succor, and what kind of eating packed on the pounds? What did his obviously supportive family say or do along the way? None of these questions is even approached.
The episode does offer glimpses of Armando beginning to change, with small meals (i.e., breakfast is an egg and two pieces of turkey bacon) and venturing out to the gym. We hear from his encouraging bariatric surgeon, but not a peep from anyone on how to keep the weight off for good.
Mired in my own weight-loss struggle -- I'm on my fourth attempt at intermittent fasting -- I left hungry for more.
