Noted actor Pankaj Tripathi faced one of the toughest challenges of his career when he was asked to portray former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in biopic “Main Atal Hoon.”
Vajpayee (1924-2018) was a poet and a politician who served three terms as Prime Minister. He belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp), the party, which is currently in power in India. Vajpayee, who presided over India’s nuclear tests, was also known as a diplomat who improved relations with the country’s arch rival Pakistan and introduced multiple reforms. He was popular across party lines.
“I’m not good at mimicry,” Tripathi told Variety. The conflict that the actor was how much of Vajpayee to mimic and how much to internalize his performance. “How much of his mannerisms should I keep and how much not,” Tripathi said.
Tripathi read several books about Vajpayee and watched news clips and speeches.

In the nearly seven-decade history of the Primetime Emmys, there have only been five instances of a series netting three Best Comedy Supporting Actress nominations in the same year. This precedent was established in 2004 by “Sex and the City” ladies Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon and was then emulated in 2017, 2018 and 2021 by various trios from “Saturday Night Live.” This year, Sarah Niles, Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham of “Ted Lasso” added their names to the list. The latter two previously vied for the 2021 prize, which went to Waddingham, while Niles stands as the only Emmy newcomer in the group.
Niles joined the cast of “Ted Lasso” in its second season, which originally streamed on Apple TV+ from July to October 2021. The makers of cinematic gems like ‘Masaan’ and ‘Newton’ are out with another important work of storytelling, Siya. Produced by Drishyam Films, the film takes audiences through a tale of a small-town girl who despite all hurdles, decides to take down oppressive patriarchy and fight for justice.
Siya marks producer Manish Mundra’s directorial debut and the hard-hitting film starring Pooja Pandey and Vineet Kumar Singh is based out one of the northern states in India, much like most of Drishyam’s films, it speaks to a global audience.
While the teaser of Siya had created much intrigue with audiences, the trailer is gripping from start to finish as we can’t help but relate and empathize with the protagonist’s plight. Raw and as real as it gets, Siya is an uncompromising look at the harsh reality women around the world continue to face.

The teaser gives the audiences a sense of the brutality and despair countless victims of violence and rape endure. It also throws light on the shocking indifference with which the subject of rape continues to be treated in the country. It also reminds the viewer of the Hathras 2020 gangrape and murder case where a Dalit woman was raped by upper caste men in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.

ReviewDirector Amit Masurkar draws out the human-animal conflict in all its complexity by bringing in several threads into the story.Sowmya RajendranSherni begins with the blurry shot of a forest guard pretending to be a tiger. He mimics the stride and growls of the beast until the riveting performance is broken by his colleagues. His act was for setting up a camera in the jungle, but with that opening, Amit Masurkar also blurs the line between man and animal. Are we separate from nature because we are civilised, and does being civilised mean we're better (a drunken song in the latter half of the film implies that we're not)? Sherni, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, is based on the controversial killing of Avni, a tigress in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra in 2018. Killing a beast of prey has always been associated with masculinity and bravery, despite the efforts of conservationists...

Balan excels as a resolute forest officer battling sexism and corruption, as well as nature, in the latest satirical thriller from Newton director Amit V Masurkar
After the success of his 2017 political black comedy Newton, director Amit V Masurkar once again aims to shed light on India’s contemporary social issues. Ostensibly a thriller, Sherni tackles sexism and the absurdities of bureaucracy, all in relation to the age-old conflict between man and nature.
The title, which means “tigress” in Hindi, refers not only to the wandering animal at the centre of the film’s clashes but also the protagonist, forest officer Vidya Vincent (Vidya Balan). A taciturn government worker, Vidya’s fierceness shows itself in her astonishing resilience: determined to capture the man-eating tiger alive, she rails against her uncaring, opportunistic superiors and the local politicians who use the animal to incite villagers to violence. In the end, Vidya’s compassion bucks against an incendiary,...

Oscars 2018The Academy announced the nine films that have been selected so far, of which 5 will make it to the final list.Tnm Staff Newton Poster.jpgEros InternationalIndia’s official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category in the 90th Academy Awards, Amit Masurkar’s critically acclaimed Newton, is out of the Oscars race. On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Ampaas) announced that nine films have made the cut. The movies that have advanced in the race are Chile's A Fantastic Woman, the winner of the Cannes Palme D’or The Square, Hungary’s On Body and Soul, Germany's In the Fade, Russia's Loveless, South Africa's The Wound, Israel's Foxtrot, Lebanon's The Insult and Senegal's Felicite. Five films will be chosen from this list, which will be announced on January 23. The surprise omissions in this list were Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father from Cambodia and France’s official submission, Robin Campillo’s Bpm (Beats Per Minute). There were a record 92 submissions this year. India has never won an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category and hopes were pinned on the political satire Newton. The film, which stars Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi in key roles, detailed the foibles of holding a democratic election in a Maoist violence-hit village in Chhattisgarh. The last Indian language film that made it to the final five in this category was Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan in 2001. The other films that have made it to the top five are Mother India in 1958 and Salaam Bombay in 1989. Critically celebrated Tamil film Visaranai, directed by Vetrimaaran, was the country’s official submission to the Oscars last year. But it failed to make the cut as well. According to Variety, the films shortlisted are selected by a general committee along with a 20-person executive committee, spearheaded by producer and foreign committee chair, Mark Johnson. The five final nominees are then selected by the foreign committee. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...

Rajkummar Rao wins Best Actor for India's Oscar submission "Newton"
This past Thursday, the 11th Asia Pacific Screen Awards were held in Brisbane, Australia. The awards cover 70 countries and areas, which makes their scope even bigger than Apsa's cousin the European Film Awards. Now, fair admission, working for Apsa is my day job for four months of the year, but when I say what they do is so incredible and important you should know I'm not saying so out of obligation. How many award shows do you know that can honour an Australian 1920s-set western, a contemporary Georgian drama for actressexuals, and Syrian documentaries about life-saving humanitarians?
More than half of the 13 categories this year were won by films on various Oscar eligibility longlists and therefore in serious contention of nominations. While the big winner of the night for Best Feature Film was ultimately Warwick Thornton's Sweet Country of Australia,...

Amit Masurkar’s political satire Newton is the rare Indian independent film that has won international festival acclaim, glowing reviews and most importantly, box office success at home, collecting an impressive $5 million (316 million rupees). Top that with its selection as India’s Oscar entry timed with its release date.
Given that Indian cinema is dominated by formulaic fare, Masurkar tells THR that Newton — India's official submission in the Oscar foreign language category— has struck a chord with moviegoers because “there is a new audience that wants something fresh. India has the fastest growing internet and mobile phone population in...
