A season to look forward to
EpimetheusA119 September 2019
Right from the onset this season captures the cheesy nature of all of those 80 slasher films with plenty of tongue-in-cheek references. There's plenty of bloodshed and thrills to be found in this first episode to satisfy the itch of any slasher fan. Corny dialogue and good "bad" acting galore, both the cast and script really capture the essence of the films made during the time period. What really sets this apart is the way the story is crafted, both humorous and unpredictable, foreshadowing a story just a hair deeper than its surface. It seems like the great start to what might be one of the shows best seasons.

If you're a fan of classic 80's slashers, then you'll love it!
kilamelle19 September 2019
I grew up watching 80's films and the slashers were always my favorite! It's something about a group of dumbfounded teens that makes the plot so much more entertaining! AHS 1984 really pays homage to that, and I will most certainly be tuning in for more!

Good start

An interesting take on the 1980's horror genre. Any fan of the classic horrors should love this homage series. If you know your horrors you will notice all the pop culture references. Let's give this season a go without the 1/10 reviews please!

An amazing homage to classic slashers

This season is back to being pretty much a stand-alone season and the first episode was super good. Feels so much like a classic slasher movie.

Spectacular episode!

Don't trust the poor ratings this premiere is an excellent homage to the classic 80's horror! Haters shouldn't watch AHS especially if they don't like this story and anything slasher related, but I personally love the genre. Also the music is a delight, no complaints from this unique being.

WAY better than i expected!!

I was entertained the entire episode. The 80s nostalgia and the slasher theme work so well for this show! Although some if the acting is questionable and the story may seem a little plain as of the first episode, I have high hopes for this season and I think its off to a great start!!!

A total Blast! Totally here for all the cliches!

Warning: Spoilers
I have been waiting for a season like this! The first episode did all the cliches of a 80s slasher film! The guy warning them that they are going to die! The final girl having something traumatic happen to her. So people will always think she's over reacting! Plenty of drugs of course.... a great cast! Everyone is playing there characters perfect. Even that Olympian guy! I love the Christian lady who opened the camp back up! Emma Roberts"I think we're in danger" Camp Leader"We are in DANGER.... OF SIN!!!" Lol They are setting up multiple killers in this first episode 3 so far. The guy who checks his messages & gets that voicemail. Mr. Jangles & the nightstalker! So I feel like it's going to be completely insane! & go completely off the rails in a good way! I also love the way it's filmed! They are using a great filter! And the camp is beautiful! Also the guy from Glee & his trunk OMG lol!!! So excited to have a season that hopefully isn't going to suck the life out of me like the last couple!

Great to watch but doesn't serve its purpose.
safatar77720 September 2019
Looks beautiful, well produced, written and acted, however my complaint here would be the same as for the last seasons since Freakshow.

It is a horror series that doesn't give you any suspense anymore. It feels like they want to be witty and stylish, or incorporate agendas more than being scary. The first four seasons kept me on the edge of my seat, but from Hotel on it has failed to do so. And I can't really tell why, because most of these seasons have all the elements to be creepy as hell. But somehow they don't. Maybe this is happening because they just throw those "creepy elements" out here, without stretching the moments to give you enough time to be scared. They are right on point in terms of content but completely mistaken in terms of form. Being reduced to 10 episodes doesn't help.

Roanoke was the closest we got but still wasn't scary (it improved on the second half, but not enough, felt rushed). I mean, if you're telling a horror story, you want people to be scared, right?

The first episode of the season promises a lot of twists, because so much happened already. So let's see how it goes. I'm giving it a 6 for now.

Still great to watch. Wouldn't tell people it's not worth watching.

Nailed it!

Warning: Spoilers
For some reason, being completely unimpressed by all the vague trailers leading up to Season 9 of AHS, subtitled 1984, I felt like the actual season would end up being great and the brilliant premiere has validated my feelings so far. Getting off to a smashing start, Episode 1 called "Camp Redwood" pays excellent homage to such iconic slasher films as Friday the 13th, Halloween, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, but combining them into a new formula that feels like an original presentation.

The setup, pacing, writing, acting, atmosphere, and music was all virtual perfection, anchored by the strong central performance of long-running cast member Emma Roberts as our main character (and potential Final Girl) Brooke. Also, more recent regulars Billie Lourd (as Montana), Cody Fern (as Xavier), and Leslie Grossman (as Margaret) bring it completely with entertaining characterizations. Additionally, new cast members Matthew Morrison (from Glee), Angelica Ross, Gus Kenworthy, and DeRon Horton acquit themselves well in the premiere.

Unlike most homages, 1984 (so far) does not feel like a parody or cheap ripoff of the classics it's mimicking, but rather an original story with hat tips to those long ago flicks. Fantastic premiere that jumpstarts what looks like a wild ride of a season.

That Was Fun
dudeboys19 September 2019
Good episode. it had all the classic tropes or old slasher movies which i find entertaining . bummed evan peters isn't in it, but the cast is still great. it was a little boring at points, but that's just them setting up the plot. there are 13 hour long episodes you have to have filler(especially when material that was inspired upon normally last 1h 27m). overall, it was a good time and i think it's going to be great season.

A Kind Of Return To Form
alexander-1030122 September 2019
For the first time in a while, American Horror Story was simultaneously funny, disturbing and interesting. I expected to hate this season, but so far I'm looking forward a lot to the rest of the season.

AMAZING
benth198419 September 2019
I'm honestly so happy with this premiere. I've loved every season and surprisingly I can actually have my own opinion and not follow the crowd (cough cough Roanoke was epic). The premiere was awesome and I'm looking forward to this season, especially without Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters I'm pretty sure this season is gonna be fine. They're both great actors but I couldn't see them fitting in this season, or Lange for that matter. However, they will be missed.

Teenage Horror Flick
chiumt5 October 2019
Slasher movie. A la Friday The 13th. Enough blood, gore, violent deaths to satisfy the horror affiandos. But it lacks emotional connection with the audience. The acting is also mediocre, the dialogue is a bit corny. Ok production values.

I love American horror story...im a dedicated fan. I loved every season. 1984 is way to dark. Cant see anything. And its boring. Hardly any flashbacks. I am not impressed at all. Usually i cant wait to sit down and watch the new episode every Wednesday. This season i could care less

Perfect homage to 80s slashers
xshanex-5416119 September 2019
I've been anxiously awaiting this, being a huge slasher and Giallo fan. They certainly took the 80s slasher atmosphere and style and ran with it! It's one episode, but I already feel that (barring them Pulling some whacky AHS twist that I don't want) this is going to be my favorite season of all!

Here's hoping that they stick to the script and follow the arrow to the bullseye! I couldn't be happier with episode 1! If you're a horror/slasher fan, especially of the retro feel, this will not disappoint!

Fantastic homage! Can't wait for next week!

1984!!!!
cruise014 March 2020
5 out of 5 stars.

The season premiere starts out great. Fans of the 1980s and the slasher films that came along with it. Will love it. It starts out great with young adults being counselors going to a camp. And a serial killer may be on the loose.

It is intense, thrilling, bloody, and a lot of fun. The soundtrack, music score, and cast are great so far. I cant wait to see where this direction goes.

Off to a killer start!
jordanrochon123419 September 2019
I have been highly anticipating this season of American Horror Story because I love 80s slashers. The cast is phenomenal particularly Emma Roberts, who notably plays a completely different character this season than she has previously played. The cinematography was stunning this episode as well. I look forward to seeing how this season pans out because there is so much promise with the story.

Also, I would say that this is the most satisfied that I have ever been with an opening episode for any season of AHS.

A good start...
TheTexasChainstoreManager19 September 2019
...and a well needed "reboot" of the show, considering how bland and out of ideas the latest seasons how been. Why not go back to the gritty basics with an 80's slasher horror theme? The only concern i have is how they're gonna stretch this out to ten episodes when it feels like it could reach it's conclusion in just two or three. But knowing the history of this show, some sort of twist or/and crossover to earlier seasons isn't unlikely.

And to those people complaining about "bad script and acting" are clearly missing out on pure logic. We know that these people can act and write good scripts. They're obviously even trying to mimic the acting and the script from the 80's era.

Delivers on gore but lacking in substance
vivlet24 November 2020
I'm not sure why I continue to watch AHS when I always have the same issues with it every season. Maybe it's the excellent cast (I especially love Lily Rabe and Taissa Farmiga), or the interesting plot lines, or the sick graphic design and cinematography. And it certainly doesn't hold back on the horror.

While very dark disturbing, however, absolutely none of the seasons have ever scared me (except for some parts of Roanoke and Murder House). Not talking about jump scares; I mean the kind of horror that stays with you long after you've finished watching. It definitely feels like AHS has always favored more style over substance in this regard. Style is great, but in any great horror there needs to be tension.

1984 is no different. You've hardly digested the latest slashing when you're treated with another one within minutes. It makes it hard to care about any of the characters when there are no stakes (who cares about dying if ghosts are no different than living people anyway??) and the episodes are short, so the season feels pretty rushed. I also missed the main cast. However, there were enough twists in the Camp Redwood story for me to stay interested, and it had an ending that I felt tied everything up satisfactorily. Decent but far from great, and I had much higher hopes for an 80's themed season.

American Horror Story: 1984 kicks off with the visceral slasher genre
robfollower20 September 2019
AHS gets totally tubular with Friday the 13th, Halloween, and other '80s slasher flicks inspiring a radical new season. Very good start with a story designed to dive back into '80s horror and remind us how fun and freaky the slasher genre can be.

Not the best work of AHS
kevinasselman6011 November 2021
It's okay, but we know the makers can do better. But maybe I just don't feel the theme. It's an ordinary slasher this time. I've always loved the originality in previous seasons. And without Sarah Paulson a season of AHS just isn't AHS.

Cheesy in a bad way so far!
Cuddles10020 September 2019
I didn't completely hate it but not the greatest of starts in my view! They have seem to have taken elements from Friday 13th, Halloween, Texas chainsaw massacre and some other films which I can't quite pin point and mashed them together into an episode! Then the cast is pretty bad the characters don't feel like they belong in the time they just feel like modern people dressed in 80's attire it's not like stranger things where everything is believable and most references are subtle its all, look at me I'm in an 80s horror movie! Though who knows what the rest of the season holds maybe they are doing some Roanoke type thing! I will continue to watch but think this is gonna come low in the league of seasons! And also where are all the good cast members?
