"The Americans" The Great Patriotic War (TV Episode 2018) Poster

Keri Russell: Elizabeth Jennings

Quotes

  • Paige Jennings : What's on the agenda for today?

Claudia : The Great Patriotic War.

Paige Jennings : Which one was that?

Elizabeth Jennings : World War II.

Claudia : You probably think the Americans defeated the Nazis at Normandy. Truth is, the Germans began to lose the war at Stalingrad. It was the Red Army that defeated almost all of Hitler's troops. Do you know how many Americans died in the war?

    Paige Jennings : Not really.

    Claudia : 400,000. We lost 27 million.

  • Elizabeth Jennings : Do you remember when you had the World War II module in ninth grade?

Paige Jennings : Was that ninth grade?

Elizabeth Jennings : I'd read the sections in your textbook. They barely mention the Soviet Union. I wanted to tear that bullshit they were teaching you right out of your head and shove the truth right in there. Just about what really happened; how we suffered, how we died. How we won.

  • Elizabeth Jennings : Things aren't going well with the summit.

    Philip Jennings : How?

Elizabeth Jennings : One of our negotiators has been secretly meeting with a CIA officer in the Soviet Division.

    Philip Jennings : Jesus.

Elizabeth Jennings : We've got to find out what he's saying. I think there might be a way, but I'd need your help. You'd have to meet Kimmy in Greece. You'd bring her over to Bulgaria. We would pick her up with drugs and hold her. I'd go to Breland and say "We have your daughter. Do you want her to spend twenty years in a Bulgarian prison, or tell me what I need to know?"

  • Philip Jennings : There has to be another way.

Elizabeth Jennings : Breland is all we've got. Everything that I have been working on: the summit, our security, everything. It all comes down to this. All you'd have to do is go on a trip.

[he gives a soft, sardonic laugh]

    Elizabeth Jennings : I know. I'm sorry. It's just, it's too important.

    Philip Jennings : She's just a kid.

    Elizabeth Jennings : Not anymore.

Philip Jennings : He'll tell you anything to get his daughter back.

Elizabeth Jennings : We'll give him a lie detector test.

Philip Jennings : You don't think he can beat that?

Elizabeth Jennings : He won't risk it.

Philip Jennings : And what if he says no? What then? She rots in a Bulgarian prison?

Elizabeth Jennings : That won't happen. Breland will cave. She'll be there less than 24 hours, and then... that's it. You're done with Breland, done with her, done with all of it, for good. Philip... I haven't asked for much. Anything, really. But I need this one.
