Reuniting Starlight and Trixie
The Season 7 opener "Celestial Advice" was a great start to a season that started off very well but wasn't quite as strong later on (none of the not so good episodes were as bad as the worst of Season 6 though). So there were high expectations for "All Bottled Up", upped further by seeing whether the improvement to Starlight's character would continue. Was not sure whether the return of Trixie would be closer to the irritating Trixie seen in Season 1's "Boast Busters" or the great one in Season 6's "No Second Prances".
Luckily it was the latter in "All Bottled Up's" case and her and Starlight's chemistry shines just as much as it did in "No Second Prances". As an episode it is not as good as "Celestial Advice" or among the best of Season 7, but it is a long way from being one of the season's (or show's) worst. The main subplot is absolutely great, but to me "All Bottled Up" is brought down a little by the B plot. It on the whole is very good and well worth watching.
Am going to start with the good things. The animation is colourful and full of atmosphere and meticulous detail. Starlight's anger is especially well animated and quite thrilling and inventive to watch. The music is the kind that will appeal to children, being current and not being too old, and should have a nostalgic feel for older viewers. While not one of the best songs of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic', "Best Friends Till the End of Time" is very upbeat and cleverly written. The voice acting is terrific all round, especially Kelly Sheridan with her long monologue being some of her best ever voice work in my view.
Much of the story is very enjoyable, with everything with Starlight and Trixie being great. Starlight's reformed personality adopted in Season 6 took a lot of getting used to but was easier to accept in my view in Season 7, here she is interesting and easy to identify with. If anybody doesn't feel the same way that's fine though, not all fans like her. Trixie grew on me overtime, really disliked her in "Boast Busters" but now she is entertaining and while her bravado is still there it's not over-emphasised. Love the heart-warming and witty chemistry between her and Starlight. The script is smart and both has fun and heart. The fourth wall breaking writing was a lot of fun.
For me though, the B plot with the escape room was not as good. While it did engage enough, thanks to the song and some nice visuals, it didn't really serve much point and felt like padding.
On a more nit-picky note, Trixie not seeming to be good at magic at all seemed to be at odds with what we saw of her in "Boast Busters".
Summing up, not as great as the previous episode but very well done. 8/10.
