A Great Little Documentary
ramasita17 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A surprisingly tender and thought provoking film. The main subject of the documentary (besides the pigs) Bob Comis is incredibly well spoken. His words make you really understand the moral conundrum that he finds himself in throughout the movie. Comis' humanity and the compassion he feels for the pigs he works with come across extremely well throughout the film. The setting of the film is almost as awe-inspiring as Comis himself and the filmmakers do an incredible job of capturing that. Speaking of cinematography, the movie is full of shots that get you right up close and personal with the pigs and help you really see some of the intelligence behind their eyes. Another great aspect of The Last Pig is how it deals with such a divisive subject without really taking a side or being preachy. It seems that The Last Pig's purpose is not to advance any specific agenda, but simply to tell a compelling story about one man's life-changing decision to stop farming pigs.

felt incomplete

Warning: Spoilers
Loved the film, loved the premise. I loved cinematography. The film really succeeded at showing pigs for creatures that they are: full of emotion, intelligence, personality. However, story wise, I felt there was a gap. The transition from pig farmer to ex pig farmer goes too quickly. I felt like I never felt what was the reason for him? was it about pigs' experience at the slaughterhouse? i visited one of the sanctuaries which got his pigs, and I feel like I got more of a full story there. what was it about the slaughterhouse experience that made him sick of it after 10 years? i feel we never find out. There is a veil of silence on this whole part. I am not sure what really turn him. Beautiful move and beautiful story, I just wish it was more complete.

How do you actually see it?

Warning: Spoilers
Cannot find it on any streaming service. It seems to have rare, short term, screening in arbitrary places, now and again. I think a good number of people would like to watch this, but they don't make it easy.

The Last Pig Melted My Heart!

I loved this film! It was so thoughtful, beautifully shot, really gave me a natural look into a world I know nothing about. Loved the music too. I fell in love with those pigs. I highly recommend this film, to learn new things and to be inspired.

Take the journey with Bob Coomis. You may be surprised but you will not be disappointed with this quiet, thoughtful, gem.

Strange

I wrote the following comment, but this first paragraph is after having slept on it. This was a big disappointment. They missed out on how special pigs are. The personality of a pig is delightful, hysterical, heartbreaking, heartwarming. They are big puppies. This film missed out. I rated it 8, but an changing it to 2.

I looked forward to it for a week, and appreciate greatly the groups that funded it but felt more compassion and feeling in the last segment with the sanctuary than in any other part. His final comment did show that he has regrets and would like to bring one back, but we missed out on feelings. I worked at a farm sanctuary. Every animal had personality and a story. The few pigs were so wonderful. One was in love, it seemed, with a partner whom she was so jealous of that they had to be separated from another female. Her partner died and she grieved horrendously. They had temper tantrums, LOVED being massaged. We missed out on these stories. He seemed detached and to say he has wondered if he did the right thing when I was crying at the slaughterhouse scenes. How can you have a realization that they are special yet do that. I thank him for letting us see this, he probably has received criticism for making his decision and speaking out. He is a male, perhaps I'm expecting reaction like my female self. Very very brave of him to do this. Very brave. I thank him and congratulate him. He actually was brave enough to take us through his process of awakening. Pigs do everything we love dogs for. They all do...turkeys, ducks...all of them. Thank you, sir. I pray your vegetable farm goes well.
