While the production filmed at Hanging Rock in Woodend, Victoria, the national park remained open to the public. Visitors were able to witness the cast, costumed in the white dresses wandering through the rock crevices and bush-land.
The iconic Appleyard College entryway, staircase and embossed wallpaper belong to the Melbourne area's well-known Labassa House.
Picnic at Hanging Rock author Joan Lindsay has said she decided to set the picnic, and the story, on Valentine's Day, because it had always been her favorite day of the year. She and her husband had married on that day in 1922.
Appleyard College was filmed in six locations across the greater Melbourne area: Werribee Mansion, Como House (South Yarra), Labassa House (Caulfield) and Loretto Hall (Toorak), Wattle Park Chapel (Wattle Park) and Rippon Lea Estate (Elsternwick).
Joan Lindsay was an Australian novelist, playwright, essayist, and visual artist, she wrote the landmark Australian novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock, on which the TV series Picnic at Hanging Rock (2018) and Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) are based.
