Japanese-American singer-actress Masumi will make her big screen debut opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in “Yakuza Princess,” which has completed filming in Brazil. The Japanese-styled thriller also stars Tsuyoshi Ihara (“Letters From Iwo Jima”) and Kenny Leu (“Midway”).
“Princess” is an adaptation of a Brazilian graphic novel “Samurai Shiro” by Danilo Beyruth, in which a Japanese gang boss is killed, and his only heiress is sent abroad as a baby. Twenty years later she discovers her inheritance, and her vulnerability, and unleashes a war against her pursuers.
It is directed by Vincente Amorim, a rising star in Latin American cinema, with film credits including “Motorrad” and “The Division.”
Production is by LG Tubaldini Jr and Andre Skaf, the duo responsible for the success of Amorim’s “Motorrad” and “Divorce.” Company credits include Filmland Internacional and Twentieth Century Fox as co-producer. The film has investment from Bbdtvm, and Warner Bros. Pictures attached as distributor in Latin America.

As the only film entry to represent Brazil at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, Vicente Amorim’s Motorrad enjoyed much success as part of the fest’s Contemporary World Cinema slate earlier this month. Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of catching up with Amorim to discuss his supernaturally infused moto-horror project that follows a group of dirt bikers who head out to a remote region of Brazil, and are in turn hunted down by a sinister gang of motorcycle riders hell-bent on killing the travelers who have apparently entered an area in which they are not welcome.
During the interview, Amorim discussed the inspiration behind the story of Motorrad, striving to make an unusual horror movie in Brazil, the technical and physical challenges that he and his entire cast and crew were up against during production, and more.
Congratulations on the film, Vicente. How do you feel everything went over at Tiff this year?...

You won’t find a better locale for a film than Serra da Canastra in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its rocky landscapes and serene hills are gorgeous, their quiet solemnity a perfect contrast to the loud gas-guzzling motorcycles director Vicente Amorim has roaming their dirt paths in Motorrad. The only other man-made objects found are constructions out of flat stones — an isolated home or ancient wall that shouldn’t be where it’s found. The same stones line the shores of calm lakes with which to let off steam: the main reason this group of six riders have come so far from their home on a beautifully sunny day. But this desire to live free comes at a cost once a random quartet of stalkers arrives to kill them one by one.
The result is an interesting film steeped in ambiguity and metaphor that I’m not sure resonates without research into the filmmakers’ motivations.

The (off)road movie take a very dark turn in the upcoming Motorrad, an action packed horror film currently in production from director Vicente Amorim - helmer of 2008 Viggo Mortensen starrer Good - based on the work of popular comic artist Danilo Beyruth. Shooting on location in remote parts of Brazil to take advantage of the stunning landscapes the film features motorcycle stunt work coordinated by former James Bond stuntman Javier Lambert (License To Kill) and a likeable young cast including Guilherme Prates, Carla Salle, Emilio Dantas, Juliana Lohmann, Pablo Sanábio, Rodrigo Vidigal, and Alex Nader. With a 2017 release planned in Brazil the production made a hugely successful appearance at Brazil's largest comic-con late last year where they showed a first promo for the...
