Now at the half dozen mark in his feature film career, Argentinean filmmaker Diego Lerman had Rotterdam support a couple of his short and feature films but the most notable items have so far been the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight selected The Invisible Eye (2020) and 2014’s Refugiado. For his six feature, Lerman teams with Barbara Lennie (Jaime Rosales’ Petra), Alfredo Castro and Juan Minujín (The Two Popes). We believe the project was formerly Literature Teacher but now going by El Suplente, this Argentina/Brazil production just began lensing last month.

While drive-in theaters remain virtually the only theaters still open in the U.S. (and a good place to see a new release like haunted-tree horror “The Wretched”), distributors are getting creative about how to release indie and foreign films.
“Jackie” director Pablo Larraín’s latest, “Ema,” debuts for free on Mubi for one day, teasing a future fall theatrical release planned by Music Box. And Oscilloscope uses the emerging virtual cinema model to debut fiction-doc hybrid “The Infiltrators,” in which undocumented activists find a way to liberate deportation-bound detainees from inside a detention center. Plus, Netflix subscribers get (at least) six original features to justify the subscription.
Here are all the new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

A relatively modest, low-key tale about global refugee issues that are usually portrayed in a higher dramatic key, “The Flood” makes a somewhat underwhelming first impression. But it gradually overcomes that to arrive at a potent (if still quiet) cumulative impact, bolstered by strong performances from leads Ivanno Jeremiah and Lena Headey. A nonstarter on theatrical home turf nearly a year ago, the feature should do better in home formats, with Samuel Goldwyn launching release to Stateside VOD platforms on May 1.
Helen Kingston’s screenplay initially seems too arid and schematic, as Headey’s grimly impersonal English immigration officer Wendy interviews newly-arrived asylum seeker Haile (Jeremiah). He says he can’t return to his native Eritrea because, “They will kill me.” But the flashbacks detailing his flight feel too sketchy as explanation, with gaps larger than our imaginations can easily fill in.

Lena Headey and Iain Glen star in The Flood as two hardened immigration officers in the UK. In our exclusive clip, they will appear momentarily. First, though, Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is seen during his days as a solder, standing over a man who has dug a hole, just big enough to cover up his body. Haile must make a life-or-death decision. Then, he flashes back to the present, where we see him in a small room with Iain Glen and Lena Headey. How has he processed this memory? And how will he present it to the immigration officers? The Flood follows Wendy (Lena Headey) as she investigates a high-profile case. She was granted the assignment because she is known for her quick and clinical approach....

I live in Texas, where most immigrants arrive by air or land, but I can readily understand why some people might refer to the tidal wave of desperate emigrants seeking a safer harbor away from their homeland as The Flood, which is the title of a new British dramatic thriller. In the case of Wendy, portrayed by Lena Headey, she is an immigration officer in the UK who eagerly grabs the opportunity to investigate a high-profile case. The official synopsis describes her as a "hardened" officer, and I suppose it's rather challenging for anyone who works in immigration to maintain a level-head and evaluate things fairly and properly without becoming a bit "hardened." The synopsis also says she's been given the high-profile opportunity because of...

"England will not want you." "I've always been unwanted..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie drama titled The Flood, which originally opened in the UK last summer. It will be available to watch on digital in the Us starting in early May. The film presents an intriguing, dramatic look at the challenges of immigration and the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. The story follows a "hardened immigration officer" named Wendy, and an asylum seeker named Haile who has traveled great distances to reach the UK hoping to stay there. Lena Headey stars, joined by Ivanno Jeremiah playing Haile, and a cast including Iain Glen, Arsher Ali, Mandip Gill, Amira Ghazalla, Jack Gordon, and Christopher Sciueref. This looks like a compelling and gripping film about the times we live in with mass immigration worldwide. And a very powerful statement about refugees and why it's all...

Lisa Cholodenko will direct the pilot for Showtime’s hour-long dramedy, “Rita,” which stars “Game of Thrones” alum Lena Headey in the title role.
A co-production of Showtime and Platform One Media, the hour-long pilot is created by Christian Torpe, who is also showrunner. Torpe is writing the pilot based on his award-winning original Danish series of the same name.
Headey will play the title character, Rita — “a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother who takes on every kind of authority – as well as her family – in a messy and unfiltered way,” according to Showtime.
Headey is best known for playing Cersei Lannister in “Game of Thrones,” for which she received multiple Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe nomination. It might be hard to believe, but Angela Bassett has never won an Emmy before. She’s now her fifth nomination after making the Best Narrator lineup for her work on Nat Geo’s “The Flood.” If she prevails, not only will she get her first statuette, but she and husband Courtney B. Vance will join the club of Emmy-winning married couples.
Vance has a perfect record at the Emmys, converting his first nomination into a win in 2016 in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for his performance as Johnnie Cochran on “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” He gave a brief but memorable speech in which he dedicated the award to his wife of now nearly 22 years — or “the woman that rocks my chain.” #truelove

In The Flood, Game of Thrones star Lena Headey plays a hardened and deeply troubled immigration officer who is entrusted with handling a sensitive asylum case. Directed by Anthony Woodley and executive produced by Headey herself, the film offers a frank account of the real human cost behind the refugee crisis in Europe.

Fresh off Game of Thrones, Lena Headey is set to star in Rita, a subversive Showtime comedy pilot.
Lena Headey’s eight years in the role of the imperious, calculatingly cruel, shallow-end-of-the-gene-pool-fishing Cersei Lannister may seem to distance the actress from the concept of comedy, but that, indeed, is what the former Game of Thrones star has just procured, with a new TV pilot, with Showtime, called Rita.
Back in June, Showtime announced its pilot order for Rita, an adaptation of the 2012-2017 Danish series of the same name, in which Lena Headey will star as its title character, who’s described as “a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother who takes on every kind of authority – as well as her family – in a messy and unfiltered way.” Danish actress Mille Dinesen played the role in the original series.

Wendy (Lena Headey), a hardened immigration officer is offered a high-profile asylum case, judged on her ability to quickly and clinically reject applicants. Through her interrogation, she must uncover whether Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is lying and has a more sinister reason for seeking asylum. We follow Haile on his perilous 5,000 kilometre journey over oceans, across borders, and amidst the flurry of the Calais Jungle to find solace and safety in the UK. But now he must cross the final hurdle. Based on multiple true stories, The Flood is a thoughtful and timely reflection on the humanity within the refugee crisis.

There’s a distinct lack of compassion in modern society, and it’s this very notion that was the topic of conversation when we sat down with director Anthony Woodley, and actor Ivanno Jeremiah to mark the release of The Flood.
This moving drama focuses in on the journey on a refugee, played by Jeremiah, vying to start a new, safer life on British soil, and his subsequent interview process with the hardened immigration officer (Lena Headey) who stands in his way. We discuss what it was like filming amongst real refugees, and why people in the UK, and America for example, are finding so little empathy for these poor people fleeing their war-torn countries in a bid to survive. We also get on the subject of Game of Thrones, as not only does this film star Headey and Iain Glen, but Jeremiah has landed a role in the forthcoming prequel…...

Nat Geo’s recent Fyc Contenders Showcase was a visual and aural feast, as the network closed the event with live orchestral performances of scores from some of its top projects. One of them was for “The Flood,” a nature documentary narrated by Angela Bassett about wildlife in Africa’s Okavango Delta.
While the Oscar nominee was unable to attend the June 2 event, held at Los Angeles’ Greek Theater, due to filming conflicts, she introduced the performance with a video message. Filmed over two years, “The Flood” documents the “magic,” as Bassett calls it, of the Okavango Delta, which undergoes massive changes every year because of an annual flood that rejuvenates the land.

"You understand, when you are trying to cross borders, the only people that will help you... are dangerous people." Curzon Cinemas in the UK has debuted an official trailer for a fascinating indie drama titled The Flood, from director Anthony Woodley. The film presents an intriguing, dramatic look at the challenges of immigration and the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. The story follows a "hardened immigration officer" named Wendy, and an asylum seeker named Haile who has traveled great distances to reach the UK hoping to stay there. Lena Headey stars, with Ivanno Jeremiah playing Haile, and a cast including Iain Glen, Arsher Ali, Mandip Gill, Amira Ghazalla, Jack Gordon, and Christopher Sciueref. This looks so much more thought-provoking and compelling than you're probably expecting it to be, and doesn't seem to be pandering to any one audience. I recommend watching the trailer, it might convince you to see this film.

Curzon Artificial Eye has released the official UK trailer and poster for ‘The Flood’ starring Lena Headey.
Set in France and the UK at a time when politics are more divisive than ever, and lines between refugees and terrorists are intentionally blurred by politicians, the filmmakers wanted to highlight the difference between the extraordinary and perilous journey people are making with the slow, clinical, and bureaucratic response around the world. The filmmakers researched heavily, basing the script on actual stories, including interviews with ex-Home Office officials, for a measured and objective look at issues that permeate the news regularly.
Director Anthony Woodley, writer Helen Kingston, and producer Luke Healy all spent time volunteering in the Calais Jungle and felt compelled to make a film that was truthful to the refugee experience. Lena Headey and Iain Glen immigration drama “The Flood” has been picked up by Curzon Artificial Eye for the U.K. Having battled for the Iron Throne in the HBO juggernaut series, the pair star in the timely independent movie about a hot-button issue. After a June 17 event screening of the film, Curzon will release the film both in its British cinemas and on its on-demand service June 21.
Headey plays Wendy, a British immigration officer deciding the fate of an asylum seeker, Haile. Immigration remains a headline issue in the U.K. and continental Europe. Headey previously told Variety that she hoped the picture would “grow a bit more compassion, understanding, curiosity or bravery.”
Glen plays Wendy’s boss in the film. The “Game of Thrones” associations continue with the casting of Ivanno Jeremiah, who is attached to an upcoming prequel to the HBO fantasy drama, as Haile. The film...

Angela Bassett admitted she finds doing voice-over work “more challenging than being in front of a camera” during a Q&A for “The Flood” moderated by Variety’s Jenelle Riley. The Oscar and Emmy-nominated performer narrated this NatGeo documentary special about wildlife in Africa’s Okavango Delta, which undergoes major changes every year due to a massive water deluge. Bassett spoke about her work at a special Earth Day screening for SAG and TV academy members at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon fills in the gap between Rose’s exit from the show as a regular back in the season 2 finale and her surprise return in season 4. As fans well know, Rose was thought to be trapped in a parallel world before she found a way to (temporarily) reunite with the Doctor in time to help defeat Davros and the Daleks’ plan to destroy the multiverse. Now, this series will explore Rose’s adventures as she uses the titular dimension canon to hop between universes.

“Game of Thrones” star Iain Glen has lifted the lid on the efforts of the show’s producers to avoid spoilers and leaks from the eagerly anticipated final season.
“They’re absolutely paranoid now about anyone finding out anything about the series and spoiling it,” he said in a BBC radio interview to be broadcast Friday. “We weren’t allowed a written word on a page. Everything was accessed through iPads with different security you had to get through to access it, which caused a problem for the actors, I have to say.
“But we found a way, either on phones or with pads…for it to be available on set.”
Glen’s comments echo those of director David Nutter, who told the Huffington Post recently that security on the set was “like the Gestapo,” with fake scenes being shot to throw people off the scent.

As a fourth generation Botswanan, filmmaker Brad Bestelink spent his entire life watching the waters of the Okavango Delta rise every winter, bringing with them elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, hyenas and other awe-inspiring animals. Now he is sharing that experience with a wide audience through his new two-part documentary, “The Flood,” for National Geographic.
“It’s so bizarre to see that change,” Bestelink tells Variety. “You really have to see a cycle to really understand it — to really metabolize what it’s about. Lena Headey on Immigration Drama ‘The Flood’: ‘Maybe It Will Grow a Bit More Compassion’ (Exclusive)
Lena Headey wants her new movie, “The Flood,” to further understanding of immigration crises around the world. She plays Wendy in the film, a British immigration officer deciding the fate of an asylum seeker. “What I hope, personally, is we change 10 minds, or people reconsider how they feel about someone who has lost everything,” she told Variety. “Or maybe it will grow a bit more compassion, understanding, curiosity or bravery.”
Helen Kingston’s script for “The Flood” draws on real-life stories after her, producer Luke Healy and director Anthony Woodley spent time volunteering in Calais, France, a refugee hot spot. Kingston’s work is “a really smart take on what’s happening,” Headey said, adding that the film deals with its subject matter without preaching or being overtly political. “I think it’s a very quiet, strong bit of cinema and it’s really honest about what’s happening and...

As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...
What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.
We won't go so far as Doctor Who...
