Disney maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as #1 after a four-week run that arrived 100 days after its theatrical debut. “Quantumania” had a 60-day delay after its disappointing $213 million domestic box office. Both films stand apart from the recent norm of home play before 31 days.
No word yet when “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate), “Air” (MGM), or most importantly “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) will make the leap. “Super Mario Bros.” might be available within two weeks (based on the 31-day window established in 2020 by the just-ousted NBC/Universal CEO Jeff Shell). Any of those films might prevent “Quantumania” from establishing more than a two-week run at #1.
One other new film entered the three lists, which reflected 14 titles among the 30 slots. Sundance Grand Prize winner “A Thousand and One” (Focus) grossed under...

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

Antonin Baudry, who made his feature debut with Netflix’s submarine thriller “The Wolf’s Call,” is set to adapt Homer’s epic war tales of “The Iliad and The Odyssey” into a science fiction series titled “Ulysse.”
Pathé has recently boarded the series project, which is being co-developed by Axelle Boucai (The Mad’s Women Ball”) and Alain Goldman at Paris-based Ness Films.
“Antonin Baudry is writing the adaptation and had the idea of transposing these mythological tales in space and in the future,” said Boucai, who cited “Dune” as inspiration.
The producer said the series will follow the fantasy-filled adventures of Ulysse through the 10-year Trojan Wars and beyond. “Ulysse” will also involve mythological characters from “The Iliad and the Odyssey,” such as Achilles, Helen, Hector and Penelope. Homer is known as one of the greatest of the ancient Greek epic poets in the Western classical tradition.

The setting and subject of Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s second film couldn’t be more different from those of her first. But the contemporary drama The Mustang and the director’s interpretation of D.H. Lawrence’s century-old novel share a sensuous physicality, an appreciation for skin and muscle — how bodies move, how they spar, how they intertwine. In the 2019 film, the beautiful bodies belong to Matthias Schoenaerts and a wild horse; in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell steam up the screen as kindred spirits ignited by carnal passion.
Lawrence was dismissed as a pornographer by many, and his oft-adapted 1928 novel, his last, was for years banned as obscene in several countries. Then it became part of the English-lit canon. Eventually it would be dissed by Susan Sontag as reactionary. Even in this telling, where the intelligence of Corrin’s character...

“Annette” producer Charles Gillibert is set to produce “Rodeo,” Lola Quivoron’s daring feature debut about a young woman who infiltrates an underground dirt bike community in France.
Quivoron previously directed the short film “Au Loin, Baltimore,” which played at Locarno in 2016 and, co-directed (with Antonia Buresi) “Headshot,” a documentary about today’s youth that aired on Franco-German network Arte.
“Rodeo” shot entirely on the outskirts of Bordeaux, France, and follows a young misfit and small-time thug, Julia, who is fiercely passionate about riding. One summer, she encounters a crew of dirt riders and sets off to infiltrates their male-dominated world, but an accident will compromise her ability to fit in. As its title suggests, “Rodeo” will be packed with action scenes spearheaded by Mathieu Lardot, a stunt expert who’s worked on “Jason Bourne,” “Spectre,” “Rogue City,” “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” among others.

France has been a supreme force in the Oscars’ international feature race for decades. This year, three acclaimed films from women directors — Céline Sciamma, Audrey Diwan and Julia Ducournau — are believed to be at the top of the list to represent the country for the upcoming 94th ceremony, set to take place on March 27. Though France is the most-nominated country in the history of the category, it hasn’t walked away with the prize in nearly 30 years. Can that change this year?
The French submission is decided annually by the National Cinema Center. The committee will hold its first meeting on Thursday to pre-select a shortlist of films, with the producers being “auditioned” by the committee on Oct. 12, before the final choice is made. Sciamma’s “Petite Maman,” Ducournau’s “Titane” and Diwan’s “Happening” are believed to be the favorites for consideration. “Happening” was just acquired by IFC Films...

An awaited English-language reimagining of Sergio Corbucci’s classic 1966 Western, a favorite of Quentin Tarantino, major European series “Django” has released first-look images as its six-month shoot continues in Romania.
Studiocanal, which has worldwide distribution rights, has also drilled down on key creative talent, announcing Friday that David Evans (“Downton Abbey”) and Enrico Maria Artale (“Romulus”) are joining Francesca Comencini (“Gomorrah The Series”) in the directors’ team, with Comencini helming first episodes.
First look images show Matthias Schoenaerts – who has sparked consistently strong notices for his performances in “The Danish Girl,” “The Mustang,” “Bullhead” and “Rust and Bone” – as the eponymous Django.
Famed for “Prometheus” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” Noomi Rapace, seen mounted on a horse, plays Elizabeth who is described as a “powerful and merciless enemy” of John Ellis (Nicholas Pinnock), caught in a Wild West bar, who founds with fiancee Sarah New Babylon, a city of outcasts which welcomes everyone,...

Pietro Marcello, the critically acclaimed Italian filmmaker of the Venice prize-winning “Martin Eden,” has just started shooting “Scarlet” (“L’envol”), a French-language drama set in Northern Normandy. Orange Studio has acquired international sales rights to the film which will be distributed in France by Le Pacte.
Charles Gillibert, whose Paris-based outfit CG Cinema previously delivered award-winning films such as Deniz Erguven’s “Mustang” and Leos Carax’s “Annette,” is producing “Scarlet” with Avventurosa and Rai Cinema in Italy, in collaboration with Ilya Stewart (Hype Film) and Antonio Miyakawa (Wise Pictures).
Marcello penned the script with his regular screenwriting partner Maurizio Braucci (“Gomorra”), as well as Maud Ameline (“Amanda”), with the participation of the novelist Geneviève Brisac.

A melancholic mood permeates “Lorelei,” a love story, character study and social melodrama somberly if unevenly rolled into one, with the subtlest touch of mysticism. Set amid the picturesquely dewy backdrops, brisk natural lights and impossibly tall trees of Oregon, writer-director Sabrina Doyle’s fable-like tale of working-class Americans on the fringe navigates its elusive waters with compassion and care, even when it veers into some predictable shallows from time to time.
More often than not, though, debut feature filmmaker Doyle’s commitment to quiet moments of humanism sells this unassuming story. Commendably, the director sidesteps patronizing miserabilism, yielding an empathetic yarn of second chances that steadfast leads Pablo Schreiber and Jena Malone elevate through their delicately reflective performances. In a thematic landscape that loosely resembles Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s “The Mustang” and the lesser known but worthy “The Free World” by Jason Lew, the duo portray Wayland and Lola,...

2019 was a banner year for rising star Luàna Bajrami: the Kosovo-born French actress and filmmaker was lauded for her scene-stealing turn as a young maid in Céline Sciamma’s luminous “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” was nominated for Most Promising Actress at the César Awards, and wrapped production on her directorial debut, the intimate coming-of-age drama “The Hill Where Lionesses Roar” — all by the time she was 18. Not too shabby.
Neither is “Lionesses,” which will likely inspire comparisons to everything from Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s “Mustang” to Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides”, all of which Any first-time filmmaking tics are largely forgivable: Bajrami, who also wrote the script, tends to both obscure major events and bolster moments that needed more development. For better and worse, the most pleasurable moments in “Lionesses” are the unexpected ones.

Exclusive: Miramax has greenlit an untitled penned feature thriller from Scream architect Kevin Williamson set during the pandemic which Blockers actress Gideon Adlon will star in.
The feature takes place when the country locks down due to the pandemic and college student Parker (Adlon) and her best friend decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone – or so they think. John Hyams will direct the screenplay by Williamson and Katelyn Crabb. Williamson wrote the original story. Williamson, Miramax CEO Bill Block and Ben Fast will all serve as producers on the project.
“Williamson and Crabb have written a story that intertwines the palpable fear we’ve all experienced over the past year and merged that with their ability to skillfully amplify our unconscious anxieties by utilizing the horror genre. It feels like there’s at least one memorable horse movie every year at Sundance. Dream Horse played last year (as did Horse Girl), The Mustang was a hit in 2019, and Chloé Zhao’s The Rider screened in 2018. The best of those films tend to focus just as much on the human protagonist’s own internal and interpersonal struggles as they do on their relationship with their prized steed. Small-time Irish crooks Peter and Michael Brooks are not siblings but cousins, although there’s no shame in feeling confused amid the somewhat convoluted Philadelphia-set crime drama “Brothers by Blood.” Other characters make the mistake all the time, pulling Peter aside and implying that the brewing trouble between Michael’s gang and the more-established Italian mobsters in town would calm if he would just do something about his brother — something like making the hotheaded union boss disappear. “He’s not my brother,” Peter explains, but his loyalty runs as deep as if he were.
“Brothers by Blood” represents writer-director Jérémie Guez’s oblique, atmospheric take on Pete Dexter’s taut and relatively uncomplicated 1991 novel “Brotherly Love.” Even the casting is unconventional — though Schoenaerts’ and Kinnaman’s gruff, mumbly performances are the best thing about it, a throwback to an earlier generation of Method actors.

Untitled Alice Winocour Project
During various stages of press for the release of her latest film Proxima in 2020, France’s Alice Winocour dropped hints of a new project to be shoot in Paris with an American actress in either September or October of 2020 which had been delayed due to the pandemic. No details were released before or after these revelations, but seeing as her first three features were produced through Dharamsala one could assume Winocour already has the coin lined up. After a trio of short films, Winocour’s 2012 debut Augustine premiered in Critics’ Week at Cannes. 2015 was a major year for the director, as her sophomore film Disorder premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and she wrote Mustang, the debut of Deniz Gamze Erguven, which premiered at the same festival in Directors’ Fortnight and went on to snag an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film.…

Proxima is, in the broadest sense, about a mission to Mars. But neither the mission nor Mars itself are the source of the film’s tantalizingly muted energy; we have Eva Green to thank for much of that. She plays Sarah Loreau, an astronaut in training at the European Space Agency whose life takes a long-hoped-for but nevertheless unexpected turn when she finally gets her chance to go to space. Sarah’s a last-minute addition to a team headed to the red planet. She’s been training for this for years.

The Cannes Film Festival closed out its three-day mini-festival in elegiac fashion on Thursday, as France grieved the terror attack in Nice and readied itself for a one-month lockdown due to go into effect early Friday morning.
Outside the Palais des Festival, a mournful black tarp draped the red carpet, while inside, Cannes director Thierry Fremaux led the evening’s attendees in a minute of silence. “This black carpet is to honor the victims of the Nice attack,” said Fremaux from the stage as he called the 1,000 festivalgoers to stand. “We want to honor the victims of all attacks, to protest what has happened.”
With that, the festival chief brought the short-film jury to the stage in order to bestow this year’s short-form Palme d’Or to “I’m Afraid to Forget Your Face” from Egyptian filmmaker Sameh Alaa. Fremaux then introduced the closing film, the quirky comedy “French Tech” from director Bruno Poladyles.

Bleecker Street has bought U.S. rights to Mona Fastvold’s “The World to Come,” a period romance with Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby, rolling off its critically acclaimed premiere in competition at the 77th Venice Film Festival.
Repped in the U.S. by UTA Independent Film Group, Endeavor Content and ICM Partners, the Venice breakout was being circled by four bidders beginning the night of its premiere on Sept. 6.
Based on the stellar reviews and strong buzz that “The World to Come” garnered in Venice, it will likely be a serious Oscar contender if Bleecker Street is able to release it on time. There is no release date planned yet.
Kirby, whose performance has been unanimously praised, was on double duty at Venice where she starred in another competition film, Kornél Mundruczó’s “Pieces of a Woman.”

Doves flutter, girls chatter, life sputters on — and sometimes gutters out — in Emma Dante’s tempestuous and touching sophomore feature “The Macaluso Sisters.” To imagine the decades-long catch-and-release sweep of a single lifespan and condense it into one sub-90-minute film is a feat; to do so about multiple interconnected lives without losing definition is even more impressive. Perhaps it’s the Italian playwright’s experience with stage dramaturgy that allows her to perform this telescoped trapeze act with such elegance, but even so, the skill with which Dante adapts her own play, marshaling three sets of actors playing the same characters at three different phases of life, and brings it soaring to fully cinematic life is remarkable. In just her second feature after the taut street-stand-off drama “A Street In Palermo” seven years ago, Dante sets a firm seal upon her cross-disciplinary emergence as a director of unusually vivid empathy.

“Horses ain’t the only thing that needs breaking around here,” says one of the Fletcher Street Stables riders in Concrete Cowboy. She’s referring to the wayward teenager who’s been exiled for the summer to acquire some discipline from his estranged father. That familiar metaphor is hardly new, trotted out recently to stirring effect in The Mustang. But the occasional touch of cliché or corny dialogue can’t dampen the vibrant spirit of this moving, well-acted drama about a fractured family coming together in unexpected ways.
