One of the major highlights of this year’s edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival is the launch of its new TV awards. The festival aims to elevate the visibility of drama series emerging from the former Yugoslavia region with these new Heart of Sarajevo TV Awards and will dish out awards across several categories in the TV arena including Best Drama Series, Best Comedy, Best Series Creator(s), Best Actress, Best Actor and Rising Star.
Sixteen series from region that premiered between September 2019 and May 2021 have been nominated and the winners will be judged by a jury of several hundred film and television professionals across the region. With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao’s silly and special little kung fu comedy “The Paper Tigers.” Balancing the naive structure of an old Shaw Brothers movie (a vengeance mission with an escalating series of fights en route to the Big Boss showdown) with the kind of male-midlife-comedy schtick that bought Judd Apatow a house or six, Tran’s irresistibly good-humored debut is a diverting blend of Hong Kong and Hollywood that delivers, on a slender, Kickstarter-enhanced budget, a rousing roundhouse hug to both traditions.
Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) have become estranged in the 25 years since they were “The Three Tigers,” disciples of kung fu master Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) — scenes that play out with younger actors in lovingly re-created garage VHS footage.

More than 30 years after he first donned that infamous Batman suit, Michael Keaton is stepping back into familiar territory. On Monday, Keaton’s agency confirmed that he will appear as Batman in the forthcoming movie “The Flash,” which began filming in the U.K. this week. The film won’t be hitting theaters until 2022, which gives you plenty of time to catch up Keaton’s “Batman” movies and a bunch of other films in his catalog such as “Beetlejuice,” “Birdman,” “Multiplicity,” and “The Founder.”
The 69-year-old actor played Batman in the 1989 blockbuster directed by Tim Burton, and its 1992 sequel, “Batman Returns.” Pretty much all of the “Batman” movies are currently streaming on HBO Max.

Two years ago, Ivana Mikovic—former COO of public broadcaster Radio Television of Serbia—took a look at the booming local TV landscape and saw an opportunity for a bold new venture. Partnering with Boban Jevtic, the former head of Film Center Serbia, she hatched a plan to build a sprawling, state-of-the-art film studio on the outskirts of Belgrade.
“I thought we could invest in some film studios and attract…people and productions and studios from abroad to start filming in Serbia,” she told Variety. But as the duo wrangled for permits and pored over blueprints, they realized that their country could be more than just a hub for foreign shoots.”
“The ever-growing market with drama series [was] really trending,” said Mikovic. As a result, “we thought we could offer some of the more interesting stories that we can develop, which is much cheaper in Serbia, for foreign markets.”

Pete Hamill, the Brooklyn-born journalist whose street-savvy writing style and editorial hand lent an authentic, even quintessential voice to city tabloids The New York Post and The Daily News over a 50-year-career, died today in his native borough. He was 85.
His brother, the writer Denis Hamill, told The New York Times that Hamill fell at home on Saturday after returning from a dialysis treatment. He was taken to Brooklyn’s Methodist Hospital were he died apparently from kidney and heart failure.
Hamill began his newspaper career at the Post in 1960. Over the next decades he would write for the Daily News, Newsday, The Village Voice, The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Playboy, Rolling Stone and many other publications. Along with columnist Jimmy Breslin, Hamill popularized a streetwise writing style that could seem equal parts Norman Mailer, Damon Runyon and the millions of outer borough residents he both championed and chronicled.

Beta Film has begun to build up a portfolio of Eastern European productions, joining forces with HBO Europe on Agnieszka Holland’s multiple-prized “Burning Bush” as well as “Wasteland, with Robert Dornhelm on “Maria Theresa,” and Dariusz Jablonski on “The Pleasure Principle,” the first co-production between Poland, Czech Republic and Ukraine, showcased at Series Mania.

‘All The Dead Ones’ lands mid-pack.
Christian Petzold’s Undine took the lead on Screen’s Competition jury grid on day three of the Berlinale, recording three top score fours (excellent).
Those top marks came from Helena Lindblad of Dagens Nyheter, Paolo Bertolin of Segnocinema, and Wang Muyan of The Paper. It also took three scores of three (good), with only a one (poor) from The Morning Star’s Rita Di Santo pulling its average down to 3.1.
Berlinale regular Petzold’s film sees him reunite Transit stars Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski for a modern-day retelling of a myth relating to the titular water nymph.

Philippe Garrel’s ‘The Salt Of Tears’ split opinion amongst our critics.
Kelly Reichardt has hit the front in the early stages of Screen’s Berlin 2020 Competition jury grid with her latest film First Cow.
It received consistent scores from all seven critics, with nothing lower than a two (average) and this year’s first score of four (excellent) from Screen’s own critic, culminating in a 2.7 average.
The film, which premiered at Telluride last year, centres on a cook who signs on to serve a party of fur trappers in the Pacific Northwest, forming a friendship with a Chinese immigrant.

What if Glenn Close and Amy Adams break their Oscar curse with the same movie? It could happen now.
Seven-time nominee Close has joined six-time also-ran Adams in Ron Howard‘s Netflix drama “Hillbilly Elegy,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is based on J.D. Vance‘s best-selling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” which chronicles three generations of a dysfunctional Appalachian family pursuing the American dream as told through Vance, the youngest member.
And if you’ve read the book, you know these are some juicy parts for Close and Adams. Adams will play Bev, the mother of J.D. who’s struggling with addiction, while Close will play Mamaw, J.D.’s grandmother and Bev’s mother, a tough, loyal and uncompromising woman who has her own complicated relationship with her husband, Papaw.

Glenn Close has joined Amy Adams in Ron Howard and Netflix’s anticipated Hillbilly Elegy movie.
Vanessa Taylor (The Shape Of Water) has adapted the screenplay based on the acclaimed novel by J.D. Vance. Howard is producing with Brian Grazer and Karen Lunder for Imagine Entertainment. Julie Oh and J.D. Vance are executive producers.
As we revealed earlier this year, Netflix stumped up around $45M for the project in a heated bidding war.
Imagine won the book rights back in 2017. Vance’s memoir, a bestseller for 74 weeks, is an account of growing up in the Rust Belt and a personal analysis of the white underclass, race and privilege in America. Vance, raised poor among working-class “hillbillies,” explores his childhood and family struggles as they navigate drug addiction, and social and economic challenges.
