This is a cute Christmas story with a touching plot and a beautiful animation, however it has (almost) nothing to do with Gogol's Overcoat.
First of all, the way XIX century Russia is depicted is all wrong. From the way people are living, to how Christmas is celebrated. The setting is very Americanized.
The story itself is butchered into something completely different, the main point of the story is replaced with a lesson about possessions and attachments to them.
I do not recommend to watch it to anyone who respects Gogol's story or want to know it. But this is a good animated short if you treat it like an original Christmas story.
