The Little Owl and the Screws and Bolts Hardware Store
lavatch5 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Charlie has given his wife Mary the gift of a little ceramic owl because the owl is the nickname he bestowed on his talkative, librarian wife who always would say "Who." When it turns out that Charle is murdered, a bizarre chain of events leads the tiny community to point the finger as Mary as the culprit.

But it turns out that Charlie may have been sleeping with his wife's friend Susan, who is married to Trevor. In a moment of weakness, Mary kisses Trevor, then regrets her actions. But Trevor becomes obsessive over Mary, and begins to stalk Mary. Susan is an attorney, who offers to represent Mary. But is Susan to be trusted?

Another strange character is Mary's sister-in-law Crystal, who believes that Mary killed her beloved brother. The police are beyond the level of incompetent, even by the standards of a Lifetime film. Mary must do her own sleuth work, beginning to understand why Charlie had scratches on his back shortly before his death. Whoever made those scratches may offer a clue to who was his killer.

Yet another bizarre character is this film is Cassandra, an employee at the Screws and Bolts hardware store, whom Mary suspects of being the mysterious "back scratcher" of her husband. But Cassandra would appear to have a happy marriage and drops out of the film at midpoint. The one character who believes in Mary's innocence is her kind mother-in-law. The two characters begin to bond at the gravesite of their beloved Charlie.

A reference point in the film is Kate Chopin's 1899 novel "The Awakening," which presents ideas that prefigure American feminism. But the film does not provide a thoughtful context for any awakening of the protagonist Mary, other than it is a good idea not to trust anyone in her town!

The main action of the film boils down to the question "What Happened at the Beach House?" where Charlie was stabbed in the back. The principal problem with the film was the unsavory characters. Almost anyone except for Mary and her kind mother-in-law could have been a suspect, including the police detective! In the American judicial system, an accused is innocent until proven guilty. But that legal precedent was not invoked for the friendly little librarian Mary in "A Deadey Affair."

Garbage

The acting, the dialogue, the editing, was all GARBAGE. Painful to watch. Fast forwarded through at least half the movie to save myself secondhand embarrassment. The plot could have made for a good movie. Just executed so, so, so, so, terribly. Ughhhh. The acting was so unbelievably fake. Gah! So upset that I wasted time with this movie. Unbelievable that someone put their name to this movie and allowed it to be publicly aired!

Another LMN silly movie with bad actors. I have figured it all out by now with these dreadful films. It's all about leading ladies, over the hill, with long stupid hair, trying to look young. So, with hair blowing in the wind and a cell phone in their hand the plot thickens. These films are all about cell phones. If you have nothing to do, pick up your cell phone and call somebody. This becomes boring and predictable. I recognized one of the leads with bangs from a film, looking exactly the same, where she plays a demented baby sitter. In this she once again looks strange most of the time and you wonder if she's alright in the head. Sorry, I laugh at most of these films. Why do I watch them, you ask? To learn what bad acting is all about. The end.

Warning: Spoilers
Why do they require 600 words on these reviews they want us to keep talking about how bad a movie is over and over again i can say this was horrible over and over I can say the acting was bland and terrible over and over I can say the actors had no personality's the lead female her face never changes with any emotions sad mad angry upset just a expressionless gave and the main creepy guy who was a child actor is just bad and out of place more then the usual creepy guy and that over extra fake lawyer friend acting like she cares so much about her so annoying I am learning how to crochet that's more exciting then this boring movie I don't know who the killers is while writing this it's kind of obvious but I could be wrong but at this point and time I don't care I'm just trying to finish it so I can erase it the sister is weird and shady too so I'm hoping it's her the friend knows her husband is obsessed with her friend I think the husband was having a affair with the friend or she was at least trying to have him he may have rejected her so the friends husband did ut because he wanted the wife or the friend did it because she wanted to frame her.if they were better actors maybe it would be good the fake lawyer friend busting in that meeting all of a sudden made no sense so it looks like she trying to make her look like a bad person on purpose.

Interesting but familiar plot with 2 couples whose spouses are cheating with the other.

When one is found murdered, attention immediately shifts to his school librarian wife. She gets help from a female lawyer friend whose husband had once made advances to her.

We have the suspicious sister-in-law, but a very understanding mother-in-law.

Am sure that the plot is given away at the school board meeting when the teacher whose husband was killed is placed on forced administrative leave.

Not worth it.

Warning: Spoilers
First off, starting the movie with having the protag getting ready to cheat on her husband (even though she stopped it) wasn't the best way to solicit sympathy for it. I'm at the scene now where she's tearfully sort of justifying her actions to her MIL and I'm close to rolling my eyes. She's always crying which can get annoying in a movie.

Anyway, this is a basic Lifetime affair "thriller." I knew who the villain would be right away. It's Lifetime and more often than not, it's obvious. We have here another naive protag who doesn't see what's right in front of her.

I recorded it one night and used it to kill some time while working at home. I want to turn it off, but there's 30 mins left. I already know what happens 1. Because I read a recap and 2. It's just so obvious.
