The day commences for the eponymous Dirk Gently being awoken from slumber, by a phone message from an extremely annoyed irate caller.
For Todd Brotzman sleep is disturbed by his landlord Dorian, bellowing about unpaid rent. While he wreaks retribution on Todds motor.
Todd Brotzman is a Bellboy in the ritzy Periman Grand hotel, as such he is a dogsbody at everyone's beck and call. Especially the supercilious Hotel Manager Mr. Plunket, who acts to all the world as if he actually owned the place. Todd is in reality the hapless individual Jimmy Cooper, personified in the song Bell Boy by The Who. Todd is in himself a nice well meaning bloke, but in life he's something of a push over. Far too soft for his own good, and much too easily manipulated.
Todds working day commences just like any other, with the same prospects in store. That of Monotony, tedium and mindless drudgery. He tries as best he can, to cope with what life throws in his path. The dross is usually provided by the Manager, expecting him to be in several places at once. But today as it unfolded proves to be somewhat unusual, menial tasks uttered by the Manager. Transpire in the first instance, as barneys between partners. Morphing into visions redolent of those imagined in Dantes Inferno. For Todd these slip into a form of blurred perspective when he is confronted by two characters, Zimmerfield and Estevez from police Missing Persons. By this juncture Todd doesn't really know which way is up, and he finds himself under their suspicions. Matters escalate with him being fired, when he really needs more money and not less.
If Todd thought that nothing get worse is he ever wrong? On returning home he enters to be greeted by a stranger Dirk Gently, climbing in through an open window. Will this prove to be the start of a beautiful relationship, only time will tell? While the two tussle with their introductions, unbeknownst to them they are being spied upon by two strangers. One of whom's actions has unforeseen consequences, for an imprisoned stranger in another flat.
Todd has a heartfelt phone call with his Amanda, when asked he lies through his teeth about the travails of his day.
