- A suspected killer whom Bosch has pursued for several years turns up dead in an apparent suicide. Edgar discovers that Harry has a complicated history with the dead man. When the case is later ruled a homicide, Detective Jimmy Robertson develops troubling theories about the culprit.
- Harry and Anita Benitez are on a date at a record store, Harry finds a Forrest Tapscott album and exposits. They kiss. Maddie interrupts with a text. Benitez goes home by Uber and Harry goes on a stakeout. Bosch goes to a parking garage across the street from a motel, he resets a video camera. A dark sedan arrives, two men dressed in black go to the second floor motel room as Bosch watches, ready to call it in. He watches the silhouette figures struggle in the window, then pockets his phone and leaves.
Harry teaches Maddie driving, she wonders where he was until 3 am. She gets out at school. A parent walks up and casually asks if Harry can fix a speeding ticket, he nods, takes the ticket then tosses it away.
Det Robertson And his junior partner arrive at the Motel. A 50-ish white male is lying in the parking lot, pushed or fallen from above. The victim's name is Gunn.
Harry tosses the speeding ticket in a garbage. Robertson calls Bosch about Gunn and with Harry and Edgar head to the scene. Harry explains Gunn was a suspect in prostitute murders a few years earlier but not enough evidence to arrest, blaming DA O'Shea. At the scene there is a 'sorry' note and a half quart of cheap bourbon.
O'Shea gets a phone message, pics of the dead man and the sorry note, from Bosch.
Harry takes a hidden camera from an AC vent while no one is looking, but can't retrieve another in the ceiling, he notices an owl statue on the bookshelf but leaves.
Lt. Billets asks Edgar for an update on Billy Meadows. Grace wonders how Bosch is doing but Jerry says he is fine. Edge reports that he has a lead on the graffiti tagger, a JV named Sharkey.
At a liquor store Sharkey plays another of his gay sex scams. The car with a willing victim drives to a dark alley, as the driver readies himself for action Sharkey's two buddies assault the man, they take his laptop and the three young men drive off on scooters.
Harry reviews the surveillance video again, the events of the previous night. Three of his four feeds have a 'no signal' error.
Bosch and Benitez explain to a judge what happened when they served a warrant on Holland, the director had hinted to Bosch they won't find anything. The judge agrees Harry's version of the events is admissible evidence, as defence attorney Ffolkes tries to have it suppressed.
Det. Robertson shows Edgar a report, they found Harry's prints on a glass at the scene. Harry says he made a forgetful mistake while taking the photos he sent to O'Shea.
Harry and Benitez interview an attractive blonde. She was roughed up by Andrew Holland during sex, she was partially strangled during intercourse, barely escaping alive.
At Rampart Jerry asks about Bosch and Gunn. Robertson says the Coroner confirmed Gunn was murdered, and Harry's fingerprints will come out. Harry notices Jerry and wonders if he is worried about the prints.
Lt. Billets sees Edgar for a private conversation. Harry calls Benitez. Jerry suggests to Grace Harry might be a vigilante, there is something he's lying about the fingerprints on the drinking glass. Billets tells Edgar to investigate further, sub rosa.
The man on the bicycle shoots a pistol and barely misses a bystander.
Robertson and his partner review the murder scene. The victim photos hint that Gunn had been restrained with a choke hold, used by older LAPD cops.
Harry and Jerry go to a warehouse to get Meadows' belongings.
Billets is interviewed by a trio of senior officers for her Captain promotion.
Bosch and Edgar find a pelican case, a false bottom has his medals and photos of his unit. Harry recounts how he got rid of the HOLDFAST tattoos on his knuckles, as required by his Army Sergeant, by punching a concrete block wall.
Grace is having a strong interview until a question comes up about what to do about an improper sexual relationship with a subordinate.
Harry picks Maddie up at school, she says the favor Harry did for the other dad made her life easier as a new kid.
Tom Holland entertains guests at a dinner party, he describes Bosch as an Inspector Javert, but hints that his persecutor will get his. Holland seems to know of Bosch's background and prostitute mother.
Edgar enters Gunn's apartment late at night, he finds a device hidden in the ceiling smoke detector. An owl statue on the bookcase draws his attention. On the base is a label with the Latin text "Cave Cave Deus Videt". Later in the office he Googles and finds the phrase is related to the artist Hieronymous Bosch.
