What exactly do we mean when we say a film is a documentary? Do you mean a strict definition, in that a film is depicting or investing something that happened in reality? Or does it mean showing us things from real life, but not necessarily in chronological order, or not necessarily in such a way that depicts events that happened, at least not in the way that we would agree is correct via empirical reality? That might be a little confusing, but such is the direction that Dean Fleischer-Camp takes in his new film Fraud. It's caused some sensation and more than a little anger at some festivals where it was labelled a documentary, with much of his audience feeling deceived by what they were...

It's hard to imagine who the intended audience is for Fraud, Dean Fleischer-Camp's found-footage collage that weaves a fictional, and not at all involving, crime yarn out of amateur YouTube videos that purportedly have nothing to do with the fabricated narrative. When shown previously at documentary venues including Hot Docs, some viewers mused enthusiastically about how it exposed the inherent manipulations of cinema (very old news, surely, to anyone attending such events); others grew angry, accusing the filmmaker of being a con artist. In its art house release, though, one suspects most viewers will respond with a shrug, if they...

In some ways, 2016 looked good on the distribution front. Netflix and Amazon finally made a big splash, snatching up titles at major film festivals and causing bidding wars that resulted in things like Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation getting acquired for $17.5 million — and we all know the rest of the story. On the smaller side of things, Grasshopper Film launched this year with an impressive slate of titles that keeps growing, and we saw at least three films with 5-hour-plus runtimes get a theatrical run of some sort. And I haven’t even mentioned how Mubi is entering the distribution game, giving short-, medium-, and feature-length titles from the festival circuit a new life via their streaming platform.
But distribution is still in a transitional phase, and the influx of new buyers and options to get a film seen doesn’t guarantee that everything will be available outside of a festival screening.

Dean Fleischer-Camp's new faux-documentary, Fraud, glimpses at the life of a typical lower-class family and their desperate attempt at "living the American dream". The film is comprised of home movies "found" on YouTube, documenting the family's crime spree and their bid to outrun the consequences. Written, directed and edited by Fleischer-Camp, the film is set to premiere in Los Angeles at the 2016 AFI Film Festival on Saturday, November 12. It first screened at Hot Docs, BAMcinemaFest, and most recently, Fantastic Fest. The prospect of a found-footage thriller has grown to be a common occurrence that when a possibly effective one comes out, the expectations peak at a level that's, well, underwhelming. That's not saying films like Fraud aren't welcome, though: on the contrary, there's a lot more to the...

On Tuesday, Americans go to the voting booth to determine what kind of country they want theirs to be. Months of the most polarized, and polarizing, presidential campaign in recent memory have left many of us with battle fatigue and gnawing pangs of cynicism and nausea. To quote Thomas McGuane, in the opening line of his 1973 novel “92 in the Shade”: “Nobody knows, from sea to shining sea, why we are having all this trouble with our republic.”
Our filmmakers might have a clue. And a little distance brings perspective. The American Film Festival just celebrated its seventh annual survey of new (and mostly) independent cinema made in the U.S.A., as assembled for and viewed by eager European audiences in Wroclaw, Poland. Though not without some escapist and experimental tangents, the selections couldn’t help but offer a provocative composite of work that serves as a kind of state of the union address.
