• [the young doctor's wife sees the Mad Hatter in the shadows of her apartment] 

  Mad Hatter : Who am I? I haunt your dreams like a ghost, for I know what scares you most. So you run, run! As fast as you can! There's no escape from the magic man.

  Mad Hatter : [with a drumroll, the men and women on stage are seen clucking, barking, and meowing]  When I count to three, you will all awake and have no memory of your animal identity. One, two, three.

  [the Mad Hatter claps as the audience cheers] 

• [the Mad Hatter picks a volunteer from the audience] 

  Mad Hatter : Now let us venture into something more... arcane. I'll need a single volunteer.

  Mad Hatter : [as the audience murmurs]  Hmm. You, sir. Beautiful suit.

  Young Doctor : Thank you.

  Mad Hatter : Lawyer?

  Young Doctor : Uh, doctor.

• [on stage the Mad Hatter hypnotizes the young doctor] 

  Mad Hatter : [the Mad Hatter pulls out a pocket watch]  Listen to the watch. The way it's ticking synchronizes with your heartbeat.

  Mad Hatter : [the doctor's heart beats, the watch ticks, the Mad Hatter's voice echoes]  Look into my eyes. Not above them, not around them, but deep into their center. You are completely relaxed and are becoming weightless. Are you ready to do something impossible?

• [on stage the Mad Hatter gets the hypnotized young doctor to stand on a back of a chair] 

  Mad Hatter : Stand upon the chair.

  Mad Hatter : [the man stands on the chair]  No. The back of it. Remember, you weigh nothing at all.

  Young Doctor's Wife : [the audience gasps]  He'll fall.

  Mad Hatter : [the Mad Hatter smiles]  Not at all, my dear. In a hypnotic state, unburdened by doubt and fear, we can accomplish the impossible. Now... one foot.

• [the Mad Hatter tells the hypnotized young doctor a rhyme] 

  Mad Hatter : [the Mad Hatter quietly whispers]  Lock sense away. Awaken the rascal. When I say it is so, your home is my castle.

• [Barbara Kean asks the Mad Hatter if he can make people do anything he wants] 

  Barbara Kean : Can you make people do anything you tell them to do?

  Mad Hatter : Only things they secretly wish to do. It's surprising what people wish for, secretly, deep down.

  Barbara Kean : [as Barb smiles]  Mm.

• [the Mad Hatter tells the hypnotized doctor to bury his wife and then kill himself] 

  Mad Hatter : Jolly good. Now, get some plastic, wrap her up and bury her in the garden. Oh, and I'm gonna need you to kill yourself, too. Chop-chop.

• [the Mad Hatter looks at the photograph of his sister] 

  Mad Hatter : My sweet sister. Alice. I've traveled so far. So come out, come out, wherever you are.

• [the Mad Hatter shows up outside of Jim Gordon's apartment] 

  Mad Hatter : Good day, Mr. Gordon.

  Mad Hatter : [the Mad Hatter holds a cup in one hand]  Tea?

• [the Mad Hatter hires Jim Gordon to find his sister Alice] 

  Mad Hatter : I want you to find my sister. We're very close. We lost our parents at an early age. I became her guardian. But her condition proved too much for me. I sought help. The worst kind. The fiend, Professor Strange.

  James Gordon : Her condition?

  Mad Hatter : Some poison in her blood. Very rare. Unique, in fact. He took her in. Said she needed constant supervision. He wouldn't let me see her.

  James Gordon : You go to the police?

  Mad Hatter : Useless. This is Gotham after all. The years passed and I lost hope. But then I heard about the breakout. I assumed she escaped with others. But now she is out there. Alone. Afraid.

• [the Mad Hatter tells Jim Gordon that he's seen so much pain and tragedy] 

  Mad Hatter : You've seen so much pain and tragedy, Mr. Gordon. I hope it hasn't left you too alone.

• [on stage the Mad Hatter hypnotizes Barbara Kean to be in love with him] 

  Mad Hatter : Barbara? When I count down from three, you will find me irresistible. You will be madly in love with me.

  Mad Hatter : [the audience laughs]  Three... two... one.

  Mad Hatter : Barbara? Do you care for me?

  Barbara Kean : Oh, yes.

  Mad Hatter : [the audience gasps]  Do you love me?

  Barbara Kean : [Barb smiles]  Very much.

• [on stage the Mad Hatter rejects the hypnotized Barbara Kean's love] 

  Mad Hatter : What if I can't feel the same?

  Tabitha Galavan : Oh, dear.

  Mad Hatter : What if I love another? I'm sorry, Barbara, my dear, but...

  Mad Hatter : [when Barb breaks a glass to hold into the Mad Hatter's neck, the audience gasps]  Three, two, one, awake.

  Tabitha Galavan : [Barb wakes up as Tabitha holds her back]  She's a bit sensitive to rejection.

• [the Mad Hatter hypnotizes Jim Gordon] 

  Mad Hatter : Do you hear my watch ticking?

  James Gordon : [the watch ticks]  Yeah.

  Mad Hatter : Listen closer. The ticking, it synchronizes with your heartbeat, yes?

  Mad Hatter : [the watch ticks slower]  Look into my eyes. Not above them, or around them, into their center. Are you asleep, Jim?

  James Gordon : Yes.

  Mad Hatter : Show me. Take out your gun and put it on the ground.

  Mad Hatter : [Gordon puts his gun down]  Good. Now walk to the edge and climb onto the wall. Been such a long, hard road for you, Jim Gordon. You are so very tired of life, aren't you?

  James Gordon : Yes.

  Mad Hatter : [as Gordon climbs outside the ledge of the building]  Now you can rest, Jim. Close your eyes. Sleep forever.

• [the Mad Hatter tries speaking to his sister Alice] 

  Alice Tetch : [Alice holds a gun on her brother]  Don't come near me.

  Mad Hatter : Why are you here if you don't want to talk? Put the gun down, Alice.

  Alice Tetch : You're evil. Leave me alone! Or I'll kill you!

  Mad Hatter : [the Mad Hatter smiles]  But, Alice, I love you.
