Broken real-time
TheLittleSongbird9 October 2019
There was something really fascinating about 'Broken Mile' hearing of it. One of the reasons was the single take camera work. Another interest point was the real-time structure. Things that one doesn't see an awful lot nowadays, am not saying that that type of camera work doesn't exist or that it is an innovative technique (not the case either way), but it is an interesting one used most effectively in films like 'Rope'. The story structure fascinated on paper.

'Broken Mile's' execution was a bit of a mixed bag for me though. Don't think it is as bad as others have said here while not agreeing entirely with reviews elsewhere that are more complimentary (while acknowledging that it has its flaws), it is a very intriguing film in some ways and its ambition is to be admired. The fundamental elements though are a bit wanting and the film's interest points are not completely realised. Part of me can't be too hard on 'Broken Mile' though because it does try hard, almost too hard perhaps, and my lower ratings usually apply to films that are a complete waste of potential or don't try which is not the case here. It could have been much better though, not terrible but not great and more of an intriguing oddity that is not an easy one to rate or review.

Its best asset is the camera work. Could see a lot of effort went into it and it is very striking and stylish visually with some clever techniques, so much better than expected considering the budget and for somebody fearing it would be chaotic or static (neither the case here). The locations are suitably unforgiving here and the sound is haunting without being intrusive.

Some of the acting, although this component is very inconsistent overall, is above average and the direction has moments where it accomodates well in this respect.

What burdens 'Broken Mile' however is the pace. Much of it is very tedious, with far too many stretches where hardly anything, and even nothing, happens and one really feels the length of these scenes. The story never really ignites, the pace being the main reason but the far too thin plotting and lack of tension cripple it further. It is not that the real-time structure is incoherent or anything, it just all feels dull and bland and then there an ending that is too over-dramatic.

Dialogue can sound awkward and underwritten and while the acting has its moments it is problematic, a lot of it is too stiff and while it was good that breathing space was allowed too much of the acting was too intimate to the point of being almost introverted. Which made it difficult to fully engage with the characters, that are also never fully fleshed out and come over as ciphers, they don't annoy or behave illogically but there is just too little to them.

Overall, intriguing enough but could have been a lot better. A lot of effort went into the style, but when it came to the substance the film felt undercooked. 5/10

running/driving and talking - no real suspense

Cannot recommend, it tries to create tension, but fails. Way too many waiting at red lights in cars and/or walking in the rain.

Exceptional movie with an exceptional cast.
casablancavic21 March 2018
I came across this movie while watching a Dolph Lundgren and jean Claude Van Damme movie and did an imdb search.

This was among the titles listed in the page - and since it is filmed in my favourite city and while watching it, I realized it also was in my neighbourhood of Toronto...and includes my house...I decided to give it a go.

I have not heard of it prior - but I can state that this is awesome film making with an awesome cast and very creative thinking behind the entire project.

While it states that this is one long take, there are cuts - but they are so well done, that it looks seamless.

The entire conception from start to finish is handled well - and the musical score - even though it's not very thematic or tense like most movies - with a massive orchestra - adds the right amount of tension and context to the film.

I can not imagine how difficult it would have been to get everything so well thought out - as it was in this movie on such a small budget and with a small crew and cast.

This is exceptional film making - and all the crew, cast and people involved in any capacity should be proud of the job they did.

The story kept me interested and the way it moved along was at the right pace.

To the director- please don't go the way that soooooo many Hollywood directors are going. Keep this style. Keep your vision and keep your camera guy.

Yesterday I say a 300 million dollar flop called Justice League - and even with a well known cast, thousand of people and hundreds of millions of dollars behind it - along with all the history of the comic world and previous movies and tv shows to sustain it and back it...Justice League was a mess from 2 minutes in.

This is a nice fresh approach to a failing industry which relies heavily on effects and big name celebrities - but lacks depth and story.

I would rather watch movies like this - where true talent and art is created then any DC/Marvel abomination of what used to be interesting cartoon comic characters.

The actors in this are top notch - and the entire development is exquisite.

No, I have not worked on this movie - and no, I have not invested anything but my time to watch this movie and to comment on this.

While this will never make my top ten list of movies - it certainly is a film which I feel at ease with giving compliments- because they are well deserved.

The thought process behind this production is unmatched by the top film companies in Hollywood - and they should take a class in how to do it right by watching this film...so that they don't turn the industry to total garbage - as they have with all the superhero movies, action movies and sci-fi for the last 10 years +.

Give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done and I look forward to seeing what else comes from the talents of the writer/director and performers.

Very good job!

Non-Stop, Real Time Indie Drama / Thriller
rossboyask-117 January 2022
Super-smooth camerawork, minimal editing and strong acting performances elevate this gem of an indie drama. The talented director Justin McConnell keeps proceedings moving at a fast pace. Very enjoyable.

Strong acting with very few edits. The small cast, the wonderful cinematography, the Strong acting and the very few edits all strung together for a very wonderful movie. A little gem. Will go down as a great piece of work.
