Rob Savage’s short film “Dawn of the Deaf” is now available on Vimeo and I highly recommend you check it out. I first caught wind of “DotD” when I judged this year’s StokerCon, which was only one of over 100 festivals worldwide including Sundance, BFI London Film Festival, Fright Fest, Sitges, Encounters, Uppsala, Fantasia that DotD […]...

"I feel like you're ashamed everywhere we go." Another awesome horror short film worth your time. This year is a stand out year for deaf performances/characters, in films like Wonderstruck, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Baby Driver. We can also include this short film, titled Dawn of the Deaf, about a few deaf people who must band together to survive in a zombie apocalypse - though it's much more about the relationship the main girl has with everyone in her life. It was made by deaf actors in London and tries to show disability as a strength, not a weakness. Starring Caroline Ward as Sam. This takes its time to build up and establish all the characters, then tosses in some crazy twists that have a strong emotional effect. Watch in full below. Thanks to Alicia Malone for the tip on this. Description from Vimeo: "When a strange sound wipes out the hearing population, a small group of Deaf people must ...

Hot on the heels of Rob Savage’s Dawn of the Deaf online audiences are once again treated to a stellar short, completely free of charge! This time terror hails from Australia and takes the guise of Tim Egan’s Curve. The set-up is simple: a sloping surface, a pitch-black abyss, an unknown woman (Laura Jane Turner), clasping on for dear life. Where the hell is she? Who dropped her there, and why? And what on earth is that monstrous screech emanating from deep below? Having screened in virtually every country in the world and having won awards in most of them (most recently, one week ago at the Transylvania International Film Festival), Curve marks the arrival of a new master of horror. I previously raved about...

When filmmaker Rob Savage sent me his zombie short film Dawn of the Deaf, I'll admit my first reaction was to roll my eyes. "Another zombie movie?" I thought. "How could this possibly be worth watching?" But Savage surprised the hell out of me with an absolutely fantastic piece of work that is unlike any zombie project I've ever seen. Trust me: this is well worth your time.
Dawn of the Deaf is an apocalyptic horror short, which we've made with the Deaf community here in London. Our aim was to create a genre film that would connect Deaf and hearing audiences in an engaging, thrilling way. As opposed to re-treading the same narratives usually seen when dealing with disability, we wanted to create a tense story in which the characters' "disability" becomes their ultimate advantage over the hearing population.

The recipient of more awards than anyone can count: that’s one way of introducing Rob Savage’s much-buzzed-about genre short Dawn of the Deaf. And this is one instance where you’d best believe the hype. From the clever title that alludes to Romero’s classic to the premise which seriously shuffles the deck and reimagines the deaf community (all too commonly and disparagingly still thought off as ‘disabled’) as the heroes and heroines of a world gone to pot: Dawn of the Deaf is fresh. Savage’s socially conscious take on the zombie formula features great camerawork and intimately sketches a bunch of interesting characters that are begging to be further explored. Dawn of the Deaf has obvious feature film prospects. For now though, sit back and enjoy...
