As a former standup comedian, I tend to be what is called "a tough room". It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud. Yet Vincent Grimmly manages every time. One of the conceits of the horror host genre is that most shows must draw from the same relatively small pool of public domain movies. This then requires that a host must bring something special to the party in order to keep the audience watching. It can be a very delicate balancing act, which Darren Knaus, the one man band in charge of NIGHT CHILLS THEATRE does gracefully. In the wrong hands, it can be distracting and annoying for a host to throw bits of comedy into the movie itself, but by doing it skillfully and judiciously, here it becomes a work of art. His episode featuring the movie TERROR TRAIN is simply without par. Like most hosts, Knaus produces his show with more love than money, but he has enough technical prowess that you can believe in Vincent Grimmly, neighbor Vlad, and Phydeaux the Raven.
