Fan fiction come to life
Rainbow Dash was a very mixed bag in Season 6 in how she was written, she was a high point of the mediocre at best "Applejack's Day Off" for example and on the other hand "Newbie Dash" didn't characterise her well at all and had other characters treat her so distastefully. The episodes of the show centered around literature generally come off well and while Daring Do's episodes are variable (of her previous appearances loved "Read It and Weep" and was mixed on "Daring Don't") the character is great.
Count me in as another 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' fan that loved "Stranger Than Fan Fiction". One of Season 6's best episodes by far and the best since "The Saddle Row Review". The concept was a great one and the writers clearly had a lot of fun with it and didn't waste it at all. It was great to see Daring Do again after so long, Season 4's "Daring Don't" being the last time, and the episode contains one of Rainbow Dash's more likeable appearances of the season.
Definitely can understand why one would dislike Quibble, he is purposefully annoying and is mostly entertaining as an on the nose metaphor for over-critical and over-competitive fans but the writers do in the middle go a little overboard on his dismissiveness and superiority. Compared to Zephyr Breeze in "Flutter Brutter" though, he is tolerable because at least here the writers make it clear that they were not intending to make him likeable or relatable.
Enough of that and lets move on to talking about the great things "Stranger Than Fan Fiction" has. While the criticisms against Quibble are valid, even acknowledged by other characters such as spot on Rainbow Dash he is also a very funny and colourful character especially when he's stubborn. Patton Oswalt clearly had fun voicing him. Daring Do makes a great return, with a lot of positive qualities done in a way that makes her likeable but not too perfect. Rainbow Dash is amusing, easy to relate to and also easy to like, this is an episode that doesn't over-inflate her ego, make her neurotic or overdo her flaws. The conflict is both fun and tense, the episode doing a great job with showing the different types of fans and their behaviours in a witty and on the nose way that will entertain but also make some uncomfortable because of how relevant today it is and how truthful it is.
Absolutely loved the moral, respecting each other's opinions is so important and unfortunately is ignored by too many people. It was great that the episode addressed that and makes it clear how important respect is without being heavy-handed. If anybody did find it on the preachy side, this is a rare instance of that being a good thing because being spiteful and over-opinionated are not good things and that eludes so many. The writing is great in "Stranger Than Fan Fiction", it is very funny and sharp as well as providing some smart and honest insight into the types of fans for anything and how they behave (too often toxic, addressed here).
The animation is colourful and beautifully detailed and the music is dynamic. The storytelling is always compelling with lots of energy and spot on character interaction. The voice acting is all round terrific, with Oswalt standing out.
Summing up, great episode and one of Season 6's best. 9/10.
