Lola smiled and took me by the hand and said "Little boy I'm gonna make you a man"
dbdumonteil19 December 2018
The title may puzzle you: "Lola" is a female name ,and "pater " means "father" in latin.Insofar as Lola used to be a man, it makes sense .

After his mother's death ,a young man goes in search of his father who left home a long long time ago .Much to his surprise, his father is a transsexual :he's become a woman called Lola ;besides she's a lesbian who's got a partner.;

Needless to say,the screenplay has a strong potential ,but it only skims over the human problems ,,it remains superficial,and the ending ,which is borrowed from countless melodramas ,is the easy way out indeed.

The only reason why you should watch this movie is Fanny Ardant's Cesar-caliber performance ;she blows every other actor off the stage : we do believe she was once the handsome man who appears in the short flashbacks or on the photographs ;she opts for a rather low-pitched voice which is perfect.She' one of the rare French actresses who,like Natalie Baye ,can age gracefully .Not afraid of playing daring parts ,she had already played a lesbian (who kissed Catherine Deneuve) in François Ozon's "8 Femmes ".Unfortunately,her young co-star gives a johnny-one-note performance and never rises to to the occasion .Nobody in the cast can hold a candle to Miss Ardant anyway.

In spite of this first-class performance,it remains a missed opportunity.

Fanny is the film

Fanny is great - otherwise the film is naive and educational - but still a good idea not taken anywhere except maybe a chance to enjoy fanny in her androgynous beauty for a whole unrestrained 90 minutes.

A great performance of Fanny Ardant.She is and remains a very good actress: Lola is at the same time shy,extravant,clumsy and loving person. Lola Pater is a very good dramatic comedy !!

Fanny Ardant

She, in my case, was the decisive motif for see the film. A good drama , looking to be more touching and sentimental than it is . But the beautiful work of Ardant saves, in many scenes a film risking be another melodrama. For the admirers of French cinema, it is one of confirmations. For a special community, it is a courageous film. For the fans of Fanny Ardant, her performance represents the axis. But it is a real good film, sure, more for good intentions , second for story.

Another boring French drama
gogga10111 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Man who wants to be a woman, played by a woman?? Why? Maybe because it is easier for common people to accept transexualism. In fact, in real life, most of that people look really unnatural and not well (imho). So for viewers to accept it - a beautiful woman. But this movie is good at one thing: showing psychological doubts and transexual gender confusion, really well. At first it is interesting, but in the end it is another slow paced drama in classic French style, politicaly correct about universal love (no matter who you are) with not so interesting story. Only interesting in this drama is headline itself. About father (pater) who wants to be mother Lola. And that's it.

A wonderful story

Fanny Ardant is, as usual, absolutely amazing in that story of a the encounter of a father and her son. Yes, I wrote it well: a father and her son. Do not miss this movie if you're quite an open person and ready for some deep emotions.
