The “Evil Dead” franchise has a reputation that precedes it. Blood oozing, guts being laid bare, unspeakable cruelties—these movies, a set of five that span back as far as 1981, have it all when it comes to everything a diehard horror fan might want.
The first three installments are known for the comedic elements alongside the terror, but in 2013 Fede Alvarez’ “Evil Dead” ushered in a new era for the franchise that changed the look and feel. The modernization took everything fans adore about the series to the next level: the gore, the brutality, and the heroic perseverance of a new central character. Ten years later, writer-director Lee Cronin’s sequel, “Evil Dead Rise,” has finally come home to roost and, man, is this new take on the franchise one bloody and barbaric good time.

Most horror fans are familiar with the concept of the final girl. Traditionally found in slashers, the final girl is the last character standing. The one who makes it to the end of the movie with bloodstained clothes and a metric ton of trauma — but still very much alive. Most of the iconic horror protagonists are final girls, including Sidney Prescott, Nancy Thompson, and Laurie Strode. However, the "Evil Dead" franchise offers something entirely different: a goofy, lovable S-Mart employee who finds himself in the crosshairs of some serious supernatural evil. Taking on aspects of a classic action hero while never losing his trademark sense of humor, Ash Williams is a final boy who grows into a final man,

The Evil Dead franchise has taken a bit of a nothing’s-off-the-table approach in recent years, with Fede Alvarez’s remake in 2013 being followed by the return of the original franchise in the Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” There was a time when we felt the remake probably meant no more Ash Williams in the franchise, but thankfully that didn’t end up being the case.
Up next, the franchise returns to theaters with Evil Dead Rise on April 21, 2023, a brand new movie that once again introduces brand new characters and a fresh new storyline. Does the existence of Evil Dead Rise mean we’ll never see the return of Mia (Jane Levy) from Fede Alvarez’s movie? According to creator/producer Sam Raimi, everything is still on the table.
Raimi tells Empire Magazine, “That character, Mia, was great, so I was very interested [in a mashup movie with the original franchise’s Ash]. We had been talking...

The third feature from director Li Xiaofeng, following “Nezha” and “Ash”, “Back To The Wharf” is a classic noir exposing some of the modern China’s worst plagues. The film had its premiere at the Shanghai Film Festival.
“Back to the Wharf ” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
It’s 1992 and bright, diligent student Song Hao (Zhou Zhengjie as a teenager and Yu Zhang as an adult) is waiting to hear if his well-earned automatic university place is finally confirmed. We live in a heyday of adult animation on television, but when it comes to feature length films, it's been a bit more sparse over the last couple of decades. Apart from brutally raunchy fare like the South Park film and Sausage Fest, serious adult animation has been largely in hibernation since the days of Bakshi, which is where Philip Gelatt and Morgan Galen King's The Spine of Night picks up the long dropped baton and runs with it. Heavily influenced by fantasy films of the late '70s and early '80s, The Spine of Night gives geeks everywhere a gory gift for which we can all be thankful. Tzod crawls across an alien plain to...

Considering the way Asian cinema has impacted the international movie industry the last few years, it is easy to say that this was one of the best decades in the history of the cinema of the continent. The success of most of the film that feature in the top 10 of this list is undeniable, while the ripples sent were felt quite significantly this year also, with Asian films getting recognition all over the world

Following the cancellation of Ash Vs. Evil Dead in 2018, star Bruce Campbell tweeted that he was retiring his most famous role.
Ash Williams was the main character of the original Evil Dead trilogy and was brought back for three seasons of the television show in 2015. The series was cancelled due to declining ratings though and two years after the fact, co-star Ray Santiago has said that he believes it would have continued had it been on a streaming platform rather than the Starz network.
He might be right, too, as there is precedent for shows beginning on one network and then garnering significantly more viewership once they move to Netflix. For instance, You started on Lifetime before moving to the streaming giant and now it’s a hit. So, there may be a way for Ash Vs. Evil Dead to return for a fourth season and Santiago and co-star Dana DeLorenzo...

Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead series remains one of the most beloved horror franchises of all time. There’s still something unique about the mischievous way it combines cartoonish levels of gore with goofy laughs, with Bruce Campbell making Ash Williams an indelible cinematic icon. After the first three movies, we saw the franchise expand into comics and video games, along with a remake of the first film and the excellent Ash vs. Evil Dead TV show.
Now, with Raimi a producer on the new remake of The Grudge, he’s been answering questions on Reddit. One fan asked him: “At what point did you realize that The Evil Dead was a masterpiece, did you have that conviction from the start, or only after it got picked up?” Here’s how he replied:
“Never thought of the movie like that. Bruce, Rob and I were just trying to break into the business.

The Evil Dead series is very close to my heart. I had them on grainy VHS when I was a kid and the cocktail of horror, comedy and insane amounts of gore warped my mind into the state it’s in today. The franchise is anchored by the amazing central performance of Bruce Campbell, whose chainsaw-wielding Ash Williams is one of the most iconic heroes in the horror genre. But since the third movie, 1992’s Army of Darkness, there hasn’t been an Evil Dead 4. Much like the monsters that plague Ash, though, the property has proved difficult to kill off.
We’ve had comics, video games, a 2013 remake of the original and, most notably, three seasons of the excellent Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz. The show was sadly cancelled in 2018 though due to low ratings, with Bruce Campbell subsequently announcing his retirement from the role of Ash...

While making the rounds promoting The Grudge, producer Sam Raimi took part in an Ask Me Anything chat on Reddit. Spider-Man was obviously brought up, but the majority of questions were actually about his other noted trilogy, The Evil Dead.
It’s been nearly 30 years since Raimi directed the final chapter, Army of Darkness, but we’ve gotten an Ash vs. Evil Dead television show which ran from 2015-2018 as well as a remake in 2013. Still, fans are eager to learn if Raimi has plans for anything else in the franchise and while he teased us with news of a fifth movie a few months ago, he offered up a few updates on Reddit, saying:
“Bruce, Rob [Tapert] and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct,” said Raimi.

The mild, sedately humming anxiety of a decade’s end yields innumerable ideas, most pertinent to this list being the inclusion of festival premieres currently awaiting theatrical release. An exceptional desire to leave the 2010s runs concurrent with the realization that many fresh offerings are sans whatever spark gets something here, and if the brand-new film you saw this year exemplified much of what you’re seeking every time you even bother taking a chance, well, rules both real and imagined shall be foregone.
