’Rrr’ has struck a chord with foreign audiences and its song, ‘Naatu Naatu’, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which awards the Oscars. Wish there was a category for choreography as well at the Oscars, for, I think, that has created the magic that ‘Naatu Naatu’ has become known for.
We had Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ and, later, Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, both of which made it big at the Oscars. We were thrilled about it. But they were not the products of any of the Indian film industries. They merely had India-related stories.
Quite a few other filmmakers tried for nominations at the Oscars
The earlier one was Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’. They probably did not identify with a woman refusing to compromise even while her kids were starving. It was the post-World War II era and there were stories about women known to compromise...

ReviewDirected by Shanker Raman, ‘Love Hostel’ has shades of Anushka Sharma’s ‘NH10’ and Nagraj Manjule’s ‘Sairat’, but also has its fair share of original twists.Sowmya RajendranLove Hostel, which was released on Zee5, is set in Haryana and bravely attempts to explore the danger that follows a runaway couple — Ahmed Shaukeen (Vikrant Massey) and Jyoti Dilawer (Sanya Malhotra). At a time when interfaith love, particularly when it involves a Muslim man and a Hindu woman, has been repeatedly demonised and labelled as ‘love jihad’, it takes guts to make a film like this, that puts such a couple at the heart of the plot. Directed by Shanker Raman, Love Hostel has shades of Anushka Sharma’s 2015 thriller NH10 and Nagraj Manjule’s 2016 drama Sairat, but also has its fair share of original twists. The 100-minute film doesn’t waste any time in getting into the thick of the conflict.

Described as a ‘modern-day classic’, Sairat’s music under the label of Zee Music Company, created a sensation with its album back in 2016. Till date, the album is being celebrated for its extraordinary, refreshing soundtrack and combination of Maharashtrian folk music with western symphonic music.
'Sairat' became the first Indian movie to be recorded with Live Symphony Orchestra in Hollywood. Each song in the album evokes a sense of passion and love while weaving in the beautiful love story between two youngsters coming from different socio-economic backgrounds.
While ‘Zingaat’ struck chords with the listeners globally as their go-to party anthem, the album’s opening track ‘Yad Lagla’ is a symphonic ride one can never get enough of. On the other hand ‘Aatach Baya Ka Baavarla’ gave us all the first-love feels and ‘Sairat Zaala Ji’ is a love ballad which is impossible to stop humming.

ReviewDirected by debutant Buchi Babu Sana, Uppena stars newcomers Panja Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles while Vijay Sethupathi plays the antagonist.Balakrishna GaneshanContent warning: This film has extreme violence. How often does a film rely on one big twist? Well, Uppena (meaning high tide in Telugu), the debut film of director Buchi Babu Sana, banks on one extremely violent and disturbing twist. If inspiration from Malayalam and Tamil films resulted in the creation of Colour Photo, Buchi Babu’s Uppena seems to have crossed international boundaries and taken inspiration from South Korean films involving deeply distressing scenes. (I felt thankful that the director did not explicitly show this disturbing scene.) Uppena stars newcomers Panja Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles with Vijay Sethupathi playing the antagonist. While Vaishnav struggles in his role, Krithi impresses with her performance. Vijay Sethupathi is menacing, to put it mildly.

ReviewThe film, presented by Pa Ranjith's Neelam, has been written and directed by Rajesh Rajamani.Balakrishna GaneshanFilm critic Rajesh Rajamani, who is widely known for his anti-caste writing and strong opinions about Savarna filmmakers, film critics and authors, has made his debut into filmmaking with The Discreet Charm of the Savarnas, a 20-minute short film. The title is inspired from the French film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, which exposes the hypocrisies of the bourgeoisie class. Rajesh, who looks at issues from a Bahujan perspective, has never shied away from locking horns with established Savarna writers working in the same field. And with the same attitude, he has taken a plunge into direction. Tdcs is written and directed by Rajesh. The cinematography is by Vinay Aravind and the songs and music are by Akhu Chingangbam and Imphal Talkies. The film, which is in English, has been presented by director...

New Delhi, Sep 6 (Ians) Ishaan Khatter is constantly trying to evolve as an actor and says that his aspiration with every character is to be able to give himself completely to it.
Ishaan made his acting debut with Iranian film director Majidi Majid's film "Beyond The Clouds". His Bollywood debut was "Dhadak", the Hindi remake of the popular Marathi film "Sairat". OTTThe film, which stars Salony Luthra and Naveen Chandra in the lead, will release on Ott platform Aha on July 3. Sowmya RajendranSrikanth Nagothi’s Bhanumathi Ramakrishna is a familiar real life story but one that has hardly made its way to the big screen. Bhanumathi is an ambitious, no-nonsense woman who wears bright lipstick, is in her 30s, drinks, parties and goes for blind dates. This description alone would have made her evil or a supporting character who is shamed on screen at the very least. However, Salony Luthra’s Bhanumathi is the heroine of this little film and what’s more, she stays unapologetic till the very end. Releasing directly on Ott platform Aha on July 3, Bhanumathi Ramakrishna begins with an assured voice-over from its female lead. This, in itself, is unusual because most mainstream films hardly acknowledge that the heroine thinks let alone share her thought process with the audience.

Boy and Girl make a run to the nearest safe town. Obviously Sairat has been streaming in Allahabad.
The comfort of the familiar is not what makes Bamfaad watchable. There is something sinisterly dishonourable about honorable killing. Films on the theme, notably Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat (which does appear overrated in hindsight and which serves as the current film’s main source of inspiration) and its poor remake Dhadak have attempted to capture the sheer barbarism of the act of killing love by butchering lovers.
I think this oddly entitled film succeeds in putting across the theme with a shudder of disgust and dismay. There is a sense of dread running through the narrative as the privileged upperclass girl Janhvi (newcomer Jyoti Kapoor) elopes with the underprivileged sugarcane juice vendor Sonu (debutant Bhavesh Kumar).
The lovers are callow, clumsy and shortsighted. There is a fantastic sequence post-interval where a sexually experienced woman (played with gusto by Neha Joshi) wonders why the young...

Nagraj Manjule, a prominent Indian filmmaker from Maharashtra, has, in a short span of time, already made people take notice of him with his first few films. In 2013, he came out with Fandry, a film which openly talks about caste discrimination in rural Maharashtra. But the director hit a home run in 2016 with “Sairat”, a tale of young love originating in rural Maharashtra, set against the underbelly of the troubled caste politics of the state. This was the film which made everyone recognize the power of Indian regional cinema and Manjule’s directorial abilities, amassing huge popularity for a regional film in India and hopefully, setting the right example.
But one must set aside its popularity for a while and talk about its merits as a film. The story is about the love that blooms between Parshya (Akash Thosar) and Archi (Rinku Rajguru). While Archi hails from an influential family,...

Dhadak is the sound of a heartbeat in your chest. Specifically, it is used to refer to the special heart beats that come when you think of the one you love. Thus, the new film Dhadak is a classic love story produced by Karan Johar. A remake of the Marathi hit Sairat, it’s both romance and tragedy with new stars Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead roles. Its music is given by Ajay-Atul, music directors who are full of experience in the industry as arrangers and have also brought those skills into creating soundtracks in the last few years.
Fittingly, the album opens with the title track Dhadak. High and low violins play backed by other soft notes. A piano provides melody to give backing to Ajay Gogavale’s smooth if soft vocals. Easy on the ears, there is a flow in its sound. The clip on...

Dhadak
Starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhavi Kapoor
Directed by Shashank Khaitan
Like all great love stories Dhadak ends as a tragedy. Which is not to say that it is a great love story. Replicating, almost echoing all the conventions of a love-at-first-sight-doom-at-a-later-stage yarn Dhadak makes all the right noises (includes a super-melodious title song) and is still unable to create a concordant musical symphony.
A film about honour killing, it is aptly an honourable failure, giving us some of what is desirable, but largely leaving much to be desired.
What goes wrong? Well, for one this Karan Johar production has resolved to do a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai on Sairat, the hardhitting Marathi film on which Dhadak is based. The remake extracts all the juice from the original and then squanders it in irrelevant plot conversions. The changes made in the original made no sense to me.

Farah Khan has completed the choreography of the Hindi remake of ‘Zingaat’ for the Sairat remake Dhadak featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter in lead roles. During the recent episode of a TV show, Farah confessed that when the director and producer of the film, Shashank Khaitan and Karan Johar approached her for the song they had diametrically opposite vision of it. While Karan was all about commercial and grandeur, Khaitan was more into natural and earthy. So keeping both their tastes in mind, now Farah described her choreography as commercial and candid for the song.

Dhadak gets a new addition in the form of a song which will have Janhvi Kapoor portraying her dance skills, albeit solely. No such song was a part of the original Marathi film Sairat. This was added as per Karan Johar’s suggestions and Janhvi recently prepped for the same along with choreographer Tushar Kalia. She rehearsed for the dance two days continuously without a break in Rajasthan and later shot for it in Mumbai in a 24 hour schedule. However, the other details of the song like the title and the singer is yet to be finalized.

Exclusive/Film Bazaar: Director Nagraj Manjule’s romantic drama slated for remakes in multiple Indian languages.
Fandry director Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi feature film Sairat is set for remakes in multiple Indian languages. Producer Zee Studios has partnered with White Hill Productions for a Punjabi remake and with Rockline Venkatesh for remakes in all four South Indian languages.
