HBO and Bill Maher’s production company are seeking to toss out a sexual harassment claim that is part of a lawsuit from a former Real Time with Bill Maher staffer.
“While all of Van Ham’s claims are without merit, her sexual harassment claim fails as a matter of law because (1) it is time barred, and (2) she does not plead facts sufficient to constitute a cause of action because she had failed to allege conduct that was both ‘because of’ her sex and also so ‘severe or pervasive’ that it altered the conditions of her employment,” states the defendants’ November 30 filed Demurrer without Motion to Strike to First Amended Complaint (read it here). “Accordingly, Defendants’ Demurrer should be sustained in full and without leave to amend,” the paperwork from Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp’s Adam Levin and Sandra Hanian adds.

Threads, a brand-new social app from Instagram that bears more than a passing resemblance to Twitter, has already pulled in a massive user base, notching 50 million signups just a day after launch. The Silicon Valley shakeup is exacerbating tensions between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, with attorneys for the former already arguing that Instagram parent Meta hired “dozens” of former Twitter employees and “misappropriated” its trade secrets to develop the rival app.

If the lawsuit between Fox News Channel and Dominion Voting Systems goes to trial, it will be devastating for the news channel, rival cable network CNN’s Oliver Darcy says.
Rupert Murdoch stated in a deposition he gave last month that he knew Fox News Channel was spreading false claims about the 2020 presidential election. Claims that Dominion voting machines were compromised are the basis of a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems.
Darcy said Murdoch’s deposition will be detrimental to the channel, especially if the case goes to trial.
“It will be devastating for Fox, I mean this is a taste of what’s to come. Imagine Rupert Murdoch on the stand, Lachlan Murdoch on the stand, Sean Hannity on the stand, Tucker Carlson on the stand,” said Darcy.

How The Canceled Second Season Of G.I. Joe: Renegades Gave The G.I. Joe Movie Its Cliffhanger Ending
"G.I. Joe" hasn't endured the way its 1980s boys' toy franchise contemporaries "Transformers" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" have. Whenever one "Transformers" or "Tmnt" cartoon ends, a new one pops on the air in no time at all, whereas the most recent "Joe" cartoon, "Renegades," ended in 2011.
Of these three series, "G.I. Joe" is the one most tied to its era of origin. The 1980s were a more conservative and patriotic time in the United States. As new episodes of "A Real American Hero" aired every Saturday morning, the Cold War was reaching its anti-climax. "Transformers" and "Tmnt" have both proven capable of reinventing themselves "G.I. Joe" has its eccentricities (such as the rival ninjas Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow), but it's ultimately boxed into its military theme. "G.I. Joe" is basically "Team America: World Police" minus the comedy, and that's not as fashionable anymore.

This week sees two new wide releases hit theaters, Snake Eyes and Old, and after last week’s expectations-smashing debut for Space Jam: A New Legacy, we feel like anything could happen at the box office. Many expect the top spot to be taken by Snake Eyes, the latest entry in the G.I. Joe franchise, but there could be an upset from Old, M. Night Shyamalan’s new supernatural mindbender, which is outrunning Snake Eyes in IMDb page views. They look like solid bets for the top two, and it should be noted that both are theatrical exclusives, but if they have sub-par performances and Space Jam holds strong, we could see the order of things shaken up. Whether or not the current uptick in Covid-19 cases impacts the box office this weekend is another open question.

Here’s something that the box office hasn’t seen in a while: a head-to-head battle between two new films for the No. 1 spot. What’s more, Paramount’s “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” and Universal’s “Old” will both be released only in theaters, coming off a weekend where theater owners struck back at Disney’s hybrid release of “Black Widow.”
But don’t expect either film to give a boost to overall numbers. Paramount is projecting an opening for “Snake Eyes” of $14-16 million, while “Old” is projected by Universal for a $12-15 million opening. Meanwhile, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and “Black Widow” are expected to earn holdover totals in that same mid-teens range.
That could make it difficult to determine who tops the charts but will likely mean that overall totals will take another drop from last weekend’s $91.9 million. How much of a drop will...

Paramount’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins and Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan thriller Old, both wide releases respecting the theatrical window, will face off this weekend at the domestic box office. Each are eyeing a mid-teens opening frame, making the winner too early to call.

So after suffering through some underwhelming G.I. Joe movies and consistent delays, it looks like we’ll be getting the solo Snake Eyes movie in July. I actually really like the idea of the silent ninja/commando getting his own movie, because why not? Sure, they could’ve gone with the logical choice and just reboot the G.I. Joe franchise, but they tried that already. If you remember Rise of Cobra, it was a fun, but not the best representation of G.I. Joe. Seriously, what was with all the CGI costumes? Well, at least Retaliation fixed a lot of those problems, but it

Although the way director Shunya Ito had left the series and “Female Prisoner Scorpion: Best Stable” already felt like a fitting conclusion to the story of Nami Matsushima, nicknamed “Sasori” (“Scorpion”), filmmaker Yasubaru Hasebe would be the one to make the final entry into the series. Already acquainted with the exploitation genre, as his contributions to the “Stray Cat Rock”-series or features such as “Retaliation” would indicate, Hasebe again collaborated with Meiko Kaji, whose performances in the director’s works had laid the groundwork for her fascinating career. Although the fourth film titled “Female Prisoner Scorpion: 701’s Grudge Song” seems like it would have nothing new to offer with regard to the world of the series or indeed its central character, it quite surprisingly presents an interesting facet to Kaji’s character while also utilizing all the elements which have defined the franchise.

Orlando Bloom gives everything to his role as Malky in the harrowing, and profound drama Retaliation (aka Romans) – and what transpires is a moving performance, perhaps the best of his career to date. We had the pleasure of speaking to the actor to mark the film’s VOD release, as we talk candidly about the struggles in navigating your way around the tricky industry in Hollywood.
Bloom first talks about the challenges of the role at hand, and how much research he did into the world of those who have been victims to sexual abuse when children. He also tells us how exhausting an experience this was, to get into that headspace every day. Given the strength of the performance, we also discuss whether he feels this was an opportunity to truly prove his worth, and talents, while we ask how he managed with the fame, and being thrust into...

G.I. Joe has been enduring a period of relative mainstream dormancy since the release of 2013 movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation. However, Hasbro’s popular toy property—specifically, the Cobra-combating “A Real American Hero” iteration launched in the early 1980s—has serious comeback plans that have just expanded, thanks to a live action television series set for Amazon focused on Lady Jaye.
While the pandemic derailed the intended 2020 release of reboot prequel Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which is scheduled to hit theaters this October, that film now stands to be complemented by the untitled Lady Jaye live-action series, which Deadline reports that Paramount Television Studios, eOne and Skydance Television are developing for streamer Amazon Prime Video. While details are lacking regarding the plot, the project is being described as a standalone story that connects to the larger G.I. Joe Universe. A live-action “G.I. Joe” TV series centered on Lady Jaye is in the works at Amazon.
The series is being produced by Paramount Television Studios, eOne and Skydance Television. “Carnival Row” showrunner Erik Oleson will create and showrun the series. He’ll executive produce alongside Lorenzo Dibonaventura.
The series will be a standalone story around Lady Jaye, with connections into the wider “G.I. Joe” world. Lady Jaye is an undercover operative that was first introduced in the 1984 cartoon TV series, before being added to the comics later on as well as getting her own line of action figures. Adrianne Palicki played the character in the 2013 film “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
Oleson has also been a writer on Amazon’s “Man in the High Castle” and led the third season of Netflix’s “Daredevil.” He is currently under an overall deal with Amazon Studios.

Here’s another interview in Nerdly’s socially distanced series of chats with filmmakers as part of the Nerdly Out Loud podcast for Nerdly.co.uk. This time Kevin sits down with actor, stuntman and stunt double, Alain Moussi to talk his film career and his new fitness system. Check it out below:
Alain Moussi is an international action star born on March 29, 1981 in Libreville, Gabon from a Lebanese father, Jean Moussi, and French-Canadian mother, Rita Moussi. Moussi began his martial arts training in the art of jujutsu under Canadian martial arts legend John Therien and also trained in kickboxing under legendary kickboxing champion Jean-Yves Theriault. He had trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Carlos Machado, eventually earning his black belt in the art. Moussi got his start as a stuntman and credits Jean Frenette, a former world martial arts champion turned stunt coordinator for films, with giving him his start.

On the face of it, a film about Nicolas Cage fighting an alien assassin in the jungle should be hard to screw up, let Cage rage and the entertainment is almost a given. With action specialist Dimitri Logothetis at the helm, Jiu Jitsu certainly had potential to deliver solid, pulpy, kick-punchy fun. Unfortunately, in spite of an all-star cast of martial arts superstars and a solid concept, the end product is somehow simultaneously too hyperactive to track and a complete slog in terms of plot. Though it's Cage on the poster selling the film, Jiu Jitsu is actually a vehicle for B-level martial arts star Alain Moussi, a favorite of Logothetis who led the casts of his previous entries in the Kickboxer saga, Vengeance and Retaliation....

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Given the rate at which the prolific actor churns them out, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that there’s a new Nicolas Cage movie heading to VOD in the near future. The vast majority of these flicks are action thrillers that see the Academy Award winner going through the motions in a series of generic and formulaic entries into the genre, but his latest effort Jiu Jitsu looks completely insane in the best kind of way.
The plot will instantly let you know if you’re on board for it, which you definitely should be. The film revolves around an ancient order of martial artists who face off against a race of invading aliens with the fate of the planet hanging in the balance, and Cage plays the wizened mentor figure who gathers a crack team to defeat their extraterrestrial enemies in hand to hand combat.

If next year’s reboot Snake Eyes ends up bombing at the box office, and there’s every chance that it will seeing as it’s a spinoff focusing on a supporting character in a franchise that’s struggled to remain relevant, then Paramount should probably give up on the idea of making G.I. Joe movies.
Stephen Sommers’ The Rise of Cobra is entertaining if only for the fact that it plays exactly like a live-action version of Team America but isn’t in on the joke, while follow-up Retaliation was marginally better for making the wise to decision to both hire Dwayne Johnson and allow director Jon M. Chu to have a little fun with the premise, but it was veteran Jonathan Pryce that ultimately ended up walking away with the movie by stealing every scene he was in.

Paramount have been desperate for a franchise that can come anywhere close to replicating the multi-billion dollar success of Transformers and Mission: Impossible, the only two big name brands they have at their disposal that account for seven of the studio’s thirteen highest-grossing movies ever. They’ve tried to replicate the Transformers formula several times, but so far, any further collaborations with Hasbro haven’t yielded any sort of sustained success.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra just about cracked $300 million at the box office back in 2009, but the profit margins were razor thin after taking into account the $175 million budget and additional marketing costs. Four years later, the Joes were rebooted in Retaliation, and while throwing self-styled ‘Franchise Viagra’ Dwayne Johnson into the mix did result in a boost that saw takings increase to $375 million, it still wasn’t close to the numbers Paramount were hoping for.

When Orlando Bloom fielded an opportunity to voice Prince Harry in Gary Janetti’s upcoming HBO Max animated series, The Prince, about the British royal family, he had to first consider his own lineage.

Even though the first two installments were greeted with little more than an apathetic shrug, Paramount seem determined to turn G.I. Joe into one of their marquee franchises, despite the critical and commercial response to both The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation making it clear that audiences just aren’t all that interested.
Paramount don’t exactly have a huge amount of money-spinning brands at their disposal with nine of their twelve highest-grossing movies ever hailing from either Mission: Impossible, Shrek or Transformers, and the latter two are both currently on hiatus from our screens. Having already funnelled $305 million in production costs into G.I. Joe so far and only seen a box office return of $678 million on their investment, the studio are taking a much lower-key approach to their latest adaptation of Hasbro’s toy line.

Despite its moniker, “Retaliation” isn’t the revenge movie its title suggests. While the trailer for Ludwig and Paul Shammasian’s sophomore feature definitely set you up for Orlando Bloom in a Clint Eastwood mode vengeance, what the movie actually morphs into is actually much different—a much darker and taut thriller, and an examination of trauma anchored by “The Lord of The Rings” actor’s surprisingly powerful performance.

Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.
The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.
Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

What if you were an international star who’d had a supporting role in two of the biggest franchises of all time, then you went on to deliver the best performance of your career in a tough, tiny British drama, and hardly anybody noticed? Chances are, Orlando Bloom has been asking himself some version of that question for the last three years.
That’s how long it’s been since he played Malky, a lapsed Catholic tormented by childhood sexual abuse, in “Retaliation,” a remarkably nuanced alternative to the grudge-bearing revenge genre from a pair of first-time feature directors, siblings Ludwig and Paul Shammasian. “Retaliation” was virtually overlooked when it premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival back in 2017, landing distribution in a few foreign countries (presumably on the basis of Bloom’s involvement), only to surface now as one of the many pandemic releases so micro, they may as well not exist.

Ok, a quick show of hands: How many of you actually knew there was a movie titled “I Am Vengeance” released in 2018? Wow, that many? Well, that’s probably why we now have a sequel, “I Am Vengeance: Retaliation,” even though it isn’t likely to reach beyond the niche audience of undiscriminating action fans who eagerly viewed its predecessor on digital and home video platforms.
Much like the original 2018 opus, “Retaliation” plays like a throwback to the era when similar low-budget fare routinely strained shelves at Blockbuster outlets, and provided gainful employment for such cult faves as Jeff Speakman, Gary Busey, Cynthia Rothrock and direct-to-video icon Wings Hauser. The effects of his childhood abuse remain deeply embedded, and when the priest responsible returns to town Malky is forced to confront his past head-on. A searingly honest film about psychological damage and the power of forgiveness, featuring an outstanding performance from Orlando Bloom." Also starring Janet Montgomery, Charlie Creed-Miles, Anne Reid, and Alex Ferns. This looks pretty damn good, especially...
