Not too bad for this runtime

"Arrêt Pipi" is a 5-minute short film from 2015, so relatively new. It's a little horror movie from the Netherlands (despite the title) and the director is Maarten Groen, writer is Nils Vleugels. The main character is a hot young woman in tight clothes and this is of course never too bad for a horror film. But this movie also delivers in other areas than her physicality. This would be the direction in particular. I think Groen did a really good job and elevated the story a lot with smart camera angles. Mentioning the story, it is really only somewhat decent for clearly under 10 minutes. I guess if there is anything memorable here in terms of the plot, then it is the toilet paper reference. So yeah, I give it a thumbs-up, but it is a really cautious thumbs-up. Check it out if you like horror films.

A simple scene but stylishly delivered

The reference to the film Deathproof may be there from the very start in the cool opening titles, however this is much more of a horror short than anything else. Apparently based on a Japanese legend of a ghost that haunts public toilets, this short is really one very contained situation. Like many horrors, we do not get much in the way of character development, but at least in this short we do not have to pretend that we do – so we jump right into the setup and delivery.

To say too much more about the plot is pointless, since really it is over as soon as it begins, so no need to elaborate too much. The camera work means the film looks good while riding in the car, gliding over a stall, or providing jump scares (as it does several times in the short running time). The concept may be silly, but somehow it sells it – probably by virtue of how fast it moves. In the end it is this that makes it work, because the next tense moment or jump scare is only a second or two away. I suspect as a bigger feature the concept may be too daft (although they made the video tape work as a device) but this small scene does what it needs to do and gets out with style.

The basic virtue - the ball of references, from Victor Hugo classic novel about poor Quasimodo to the Japanese horrors and urban legends. But the most inspired detail remains the location. Because old fears are resurrected, in inspired manner, to the viewer. Short, just good horror about toilet papers and the option from the toilet cabin.
