Beyoncé is never too shy to pay homage to the past and she set the internet ablaze when she recently sampled Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.” When Sinatra explained the song, Queen B’s decision to sample it made so much sense. In a way, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” paved the way for some of Beyoncé’s best songs.
Nancy Sinatra said ‘These Boots Are Made for Walkin” is perfect for certain women
During a 2004 interview with Hot Press, Sinatra discussed the impact music had one her life. “The music is the thread all the way through,” she said. “Classical piano for 12 years and teaching 40 girls in school how to sing in four-part harmony were two of my early passions. I lost my way for a little while but after my first so-called marriage (to teen idol Tommy Sands) ended I was able to...

If you’ve attended a mainstream country concert in the past decade, you’re probably familiar with the part of the set where the headliner sprinkles in a non-obvious cover from an adjacent genre like pop, R&b, or classic rock. It’s a move with any number of purposes: to show an artist’s range of influences, to reel in a drifting crowd with a massive hit, to appeal to a wider audience, or to highlight how fluid and arbitrary genre borders really are when you strip a song back to its essentials.

Artists from different genres and eras can create similar songs. Rihanna‘s “Diamonds” has some interesting similarities to a song from The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Both tracks have the same central theme, even if that isn’t obvious at first.
Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ was co-written by a pop star and a pair of important producers
Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen are a pair of musical producers collectively known as Stargate. Stargate produced big singles like Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable,” Selena Gomez’s “Come & Get It,” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.” They’ve also worked on several Rihanna hits, including “Diamonds,” which they co-wrote with pop star Sia. During a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hermansen said they wanted to write something different, and Sia spontaneously came up with a lyric about “diamonds in the sky.”
There is one other pop hit with similar lyrics:...

Beyonce has spent most of her life in the spotlight, and — unfortunately — having that kind of fame and renown can result in some scary encounters with fans. It can be a challenge to walk the line between being available for the fans who have helped celebrities build their wealth and status while also protecting their privacy and safety.
For Beyonce, that line was clearly crossed by a fan in Brazil who grabbed her while she was on stage.

Beyoncé‘s performance at the grand opening of Atlantis The Royal resort in Dubai was a highly-anticipated event by Beyoncé fans around the world, despite the exclusive concert being invite-only. During the show, fans captured snippets of the show (which had a no-phone policy) and the various songs Beyoncé performed. One of them, her 2006 collab with Shakira, “Beautiful Liar,” was brought out of retirement from Beyoncé’s set lists.

In the mid-2000s, Beyoncé and Shakira were two of the biggest pop stars in the world, with No. 1 hit singles to their name such as “Baby Boy” and “Hips Don’t Lie.” On her birthday in 2006, Beyoncé released her sophomore album B’Day. Since announcing her first solo album of new material in more than five years, Beyoncé has yet again taken over the cultural conversation. As always, the legendary musician didn’t disappoint. From the instant hit “Break My Soul” to her photo shoot for British Vogue and making physical copies available for pre-order on her website (sorry, they’re currently sold out), the release of Reniassance has been one of the more refreshing, and exciting, rollouts of the past year. Even an unexpected leak two days before the July 29 release date sparked controversy,...

No drama here! More than a decade since the leak of the 2009 remix of her song "Turnin' Me On," which featured a line seemingly shading Beyonce, singer Keri Hilson told radio host Persia Nicole that the women have nothing but respect for one another. The remix featured Keri's collaborator Lil Wayne, as well as T-Pain. Upon release, fans speculated that Keri was throwing shade at Beyonce and Ciara, her peers in the music industry. "Your vision cloudy if you think that you da best, You can dance, she can sing, but need to move it to the left," Keri sang on the track, which makes reference to the lyrics in "Irreplaceable," Bey's...

Whether a viewer in 1896 or 2020, cinema has always been a dynamic and variable experience. Cinema as an event—as a manifestation of a meeting point between the art of moving images and an audience, big or small—has never fit any one definition, and this last year, so severely disrupted by a global pandemic, has deeply underscored the versatility and resilience of our great love. Our viewing this year, like that of so many, has been strange: compromised, confrontational, escapist, euphoric, painful, revelatory—encompassing all of the reactions one can have to film. How we encountered our favorite movies and most meaningful cinematic experiences of the year was hardly new: A by-now-normal mix of festivals, theatres, various subscription and transactional streaming services, as well as private screener links and gems buried on over-stuffed hard drives. But for most of the year, the communal experience shrunk to living rooms and glowing screens.

Nominations for the Grammy Awards are coming this Tuesday November 24, and there are categories that might set new records, either for wins or for nominations. Let’s look at a few.
DISCUSS2021 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
Record of the Year
Multiple records could be broken in this category this year. First, if Beyoncé gets a nomination this year — whether it is for “Savage (Remix)” with Megan Thee Stallion, her own “Black Parade,” or maybe even both — she’ll break the record for the most nominations for a female artist in this category, which she currently holds in a tie with Barbra Streisand at five apiece. Beyonce’s previous nominations were for “Say My Name” (as a member of Destiny’s Child in 2001), “Crazy in Love” (2004), “Irreplaceable” (2008), “Halo” (2010) and “Formation” (2017).
Not only that, Beyoncé would also join a select list of artists who’ve had Roty nominations in three different decades.

For every previously unknown single that reaches ubiquity after earning the affection of TikTok users — from Sub Urban’s “Cradles” to StaySolidRocky’s “Party Girl” to Claire Rosinkranz’s “Backyard Boy” — there seems to be a random oldie that experiences a sudden resurgence thanks to the app: Ciara’s “Get Up,” Ke$ha’s “Cannibal,” La Roux’s “Bulletproof.”

Megan Thee Stallion was thwarted two weeks ago when her “Savage” remix featuring Beyonce pushed her up to number-two on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj‘s “Say So” remix edged them out. But the duo made their way to the top anyway this week on the chart dated May 30. It’s Megan’s first chart-topper, but Beyonce’s seventh as a solo artist and her 11th when you count her hits with Destiny’s Child. What’s more, it helps Beyonce match a record that Mariah Carey just set earlier this year. Listen to “Savage” above.

Tom Hanks and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creators Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna were among the many who paid tribute to the CW musical dramedy’s songwriter (and Fountains of Wayne co-founder) Adam Schlesinger after his death Wednesday at 52 from coronavirus symptoms.
Schlesinger, who earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing the title song from Hanks’ directorial debut “That Thing You Do!” earned high praise from the actor-director, who himself has been recovering from Covid-19. “There would be no Playtone without Adam Schlesinger, without his That Thing You Do!” Hanks tweeted. “He was a One-der. Lost him to Covid-19. Terribly sad today.
“I have so much to say about Adam Schlesinger that I am at a complete loss for words. He is irreplaceable,” Bloom tweeted.
“Adam was so funny, so kind, so opinionated, so clever, so passionate,” she wrote, remembering the Fountains of Wayne frontman as a colleague and as a longtime friend.

It’s almost unheard of for one artist to earn multiple Grammy nominations for Record of the Year at the same ceremony. Pharrell Williams did it in 2014 as a featured artist on both “Blurred Lines” and the winning song “Get Lucky,” but when nominations are announced on December 5 two hopefuls could make history as the first female artists ever to accomplish the feat: Beyonce and Cardi B.
Beyonce has been nominated for Record of the Year five times without a win thus far: “Say My Name” with Destiny’s Child (2001), “Crazy in Love” (2004), “Irreplaceable” (2008), “Halo” (2010) and “Formation” (2017). She could up that total to seven this year with a pair of duets. According to the combined predictions of nearly 2,000 Gold Derby users, she ranks fourth in the category for “Perfect” with Ed Sheeran (17/2 odds) and sixth for “Apeshit” with Jay-z (13/1).

The previous two films of France's resident doctor-turned-filmmaker, Thomas Lilti, were called Irreplaceable (Medecin de campagne) and Hippocrates: Diary of a French Doctor, and both were inspired by his own days in the medical profession. Hippocrates (2014), which cast a then up-and-coming Vincent Lacoste as a bumbling hospital intern, premiered at the Cannes Critics' Week and became an unexpectedly robust box-office hit, while 2016's Irreplaceable, which starred Intouchables' Francois Cluzet as a rural doctor, did even better.

At Coachella, Beyoncé gave the performance she should have given at the Super Bowl. Granted, she had an hour and 45 minutes to work with at the desert festival Saturday night, versus only 13 minutes to work with at that gig five years ago. But if the network, NFL, Ravens, 49ers and their fans had seen what we saw at the Empire Polo Grounds, surely they would have agreed by acclimation to, you know, just put the third quarter off by an hour and a half.
Part of the brilliance of Saturday’s set was that it was more of a half-time show than her half-time show, in that she took the marching band that has been persona non grata at the Bowl for years and built a 105-minute performance around overpacked horn charts, glorified drum majorettes and nonstop drumline insanity. Who would’ve guessed the missing ingredients needed to ratchet her...

For fans of the J.J. Abrams-created Cloverfield universe — which currently includes a trio of films, with at least one more on the way — the element of surprise has become a major part of the sci-fi series’ appeal. The last two films in the expanding cinematic series, “10 Cloverfield Lane” and the recent Netflix feature “The Cloverfield Paradox,” both arrived as unexpected additions to the canon, with “Paradox” using Super Bowl Sunday trailers to not only announce that the film was now a Netflix property but that the film was going to be available to stream that very night.
But it’s not just fans who have been shocked by the films and their addition to the world of Cloverfield, as even stars like “Paradox” lead Gugu Mbatha-Raw weren’t let in on the secret until the very last moment. As Mbatha-Raw recently told IndieWire, she didn’t even...

Be prepared to cry. Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a romance film titled Irreplaceable You, the feature directorial debut of TV director Stephanie Laing. The very talented Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars along with Michiel Huisman as two lovers who have been together since childhood, knowing they'll spend their lives together. The plot is actually a very heavy tear-jerker, about Mbatha-Raw being diagnosed with cancer, and she tries to help him find another woman before she dies, hence the title about "irreplaceable you." The full cast includes Kate McKinnon, Claire Holt, Jacki Weaver, Christopher Walken, Steve Coogan, Gayle Rankin, and Jessie Ennis. There's some humor in this to help shake up the heavy emotions, but it still looks like a very sweet, very lovely film about life and love and how to make the most of it. Watch below.
