Woo Moo-chi was once the leader of a band of outlaws. He and his right-hand man, Kang Seob, must team up with a motley crew of pirates led by captain, Hae Rang, to embark on a treacherous ocean voyage searching for the lost treasure of the Goryeo royal family. The pirates find themselves fighting for the hidden treasure against rebel, Bu Heung-soo.
This swashbuckling period adventure, also known as The Pirates: Goblin Flag, is a spiritual sequel to the 2014 box-office hit The Pirates. Kim Jeong-hoon (The Accidental Detective) takes over as director with the story by Chun Sung-il, one of the screenwriters from the first movie. It also features a star-studded cast led by Kang Ha-neul (Waiting for Rain), Han Hyo-joo (The Sun Does Not Move), Lee Kwang-soo (Sinkhole), Kwon Sang-woo (Hitman: Agent Jun), Kim Sung-oh (Night of the Undead), Chae Soo-bin (Sweet & Sour) and K-pop idol Sehun from...

If “The Accidental Detective” was a steadfast, inoffensively brittle attempt at the archetypal buddy cop formula, then its sequel is a complete undoing of any prior good work. Sluggish, hokey and rather bland, director Lee Eon-hee’s attempts at changing a successful formula prove fruitless, even if some initial box office success would have one believe otherwise.
Story wise, “In Action” picks up shortly after the finale of its prequel, following the grumpy ex-cop No Tae-soo (Sung Dong-il) and crime enthusiast Kang Dae-man (Kwon Sang-woo) as they fulfil their promise of opening up a private detective agency together. Far from the glamorous dream team they once envisaged themselves as, though, the pairing find they are mostly confined to their desks, only fleetingly manoeuvring around to distribute promotional material of their technically illegal venture throughout police stations and public areas. Yet, just as quickly as it seems all hope is lost,...

There is something steadfast about the type of charm a movie such as “The Accidental Detective” has. Loosely based on Hitchcock’s “Strangers On a Train,” this comedic crime thriller provides plenty of jocular entertainment, even if the story itself is reasonably unremarkable. Thus, despite leaving plenty to be desired, Kim Jeong-hoon’s second directorial effort is an absorbing watch, regardless of whether its tried-and-tested buddy cop formula stumbles on the occasional cliché.
Driven by his passion for crime, Kang Dae-man (Kwon Sang-woo) often shows up at his police friend Joon-soo’s (Park Hae-joon) workplace, much to the displeasure of the Violent Crime Division. Often attempting to interject himself into criminal questioning through, he particularly grates on the “homicide white shark” Noh Tae-soo (Sung Dong-il), a respected officer who was infamously demoted for once using excessive violence. However, when their mutual friend Joon-so finds himself neglected by...

One of the finest Hong Kong cop thrillers of the previous decade, Johnnie To’s celebrated “Drug War” was a major success when it was released and continued his stance as one of the country’s finest modern directors. Now four years later, South Korea has opted for a remake of the film that takes the core essence of the same story into a new direction with Lee Hae-yeong’s new effort “Believer”.
After a friend is killed, determined cop Won-ho now has more ammunition than ever to nail the drug kingpin at the center of the past two years of his life. After getting further clues to his identity, he and his squad begin an operation with the survivor of one of the attacks, Rak, a low-level employee in the operation, and begin to work through the organization, in order to reach the top. Complicated by...
